32 F. LELIAERT ET AL.diverging early from the remaining Chlorophyta, but the relationshipsamong these lineages remain largely unresolved, mainly because multi-gene data are only available for a limitednumber of taxa. Similarly, phylogenetic relationships amongand within the main clades of the core chlorophytes (Ulvophyceae,Trebouxiophyceae and Chlorophyceae) have not beenfully resolved. Other outstanding issues include elucidation ofthe early diversification of the Streptophyta and identificationof the closest living relative of the land plants. It has become clear that an accurate phylogenetic reconstructionof an ancient group like the green plants will require a richsampling both in terms of exemplar taxa and molecular markers, along with the application of state of the art phylogenetictechniques. The rapid increase in the amount of genomic datafrom a wide range of green algae has great potential to resolvelarge-scale green algal relationships. In addition these data formthe basis for investigations of molecular evolution of genes andgenomes, providing valuable insight into the evolutionary historiesof the green algae.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSWe are grateful to Pavel Škaloud, Fabio Rindi, Juan López-Bautista, Frederick Zechman, Marvin Fawley, Aurora Nedelcu,Marc Buchheim, Andrey Gontcharov, Burkhard Becker andRichard McCourt for discussions and comments on themanuscript.
