W Bro A Michael Dyson, PPSGW, has
taken up the position in succession to W
Bro Peter Shields, who retired as office
manager in August this year.
W Bro Mick is currently Master of Albert
Edward Lodge No 1783 (for a second time)
and was Founding secretary of the Rugby
Football Lodge No 9811. He is the son of
former Huddersfield RL favourite Frank
"Spanky" Dyson, a goalkicking full-back of
the late 1950s and 60s.
He is also a member of West Riding
Acting Officers Lodge No 9645 and
Ryburn Chapter No 1283 and has been a
Craft Liaison Officer in Area Two of the
Province. He is a Grand Patron of the Grand
Charity.
He retired last year as a high-ranking
police officer, having served as a financial
investigator and was acting head of
Financial Investigations within the West
Yorkshire force. Some 25 years ago he was
a member of West Yorkshire Firearms
response team.
W Bro Mick’s police duties in recent
years have involved the investigation of
money laundering and the finances of
criminals. This has made him conversant will
all aspects of business finance, the keeping
of records and the compilation of complex
reports.
A valued lecturer, he once presented a
paper to 250 barristers at a seminar at
Durham University.
In recent years he has arranged the
security for the Provincial meeting at
Harrogate.

WBro Dyson and his wife, Jackie
Married to Jackie, he is a keen
sportsman having played cricket and
rugby league in Huddersfield.
• W Bro Peter Shields, of Mawsis Lodge
No 4644, joined Provincial Office in June
1999 and worked initially on West Riding
Masonic Charity projects.
The former Bradford and Bingley
Building Society manager dealt with the
Charity’s covenant scheme and ultimately
became company secretary.
From September 2000 he had also
been office manager and on his
retirement the Provincial Grand Master, R
W Bro John K Clayton, presented him
with a cheque, which Peter said he would
use towards a short golfing tuition course
before he took up the sport.

DURING his address at the annual
Investiture at United Grand Lodge earlier this
year the M W Grand Master, HRH The
Duke of Kent, said:
“In the course of the memorable and
most enjoyable meeting of the 150th
anniversary of the Grand Lodge of Mark
Master Masons, where I was present as a
guest of their Grand Master, my brother
Prince Michael, I had the opportunity to see
also many other long established, well
known and respected Orders of Masonry to
which many Craft members belong.
“The Preliminary Declaration of the Act
of Union of the two Grand Lodges in
December 1813 says that it was declared
and announced that pure Antient Masonry
consists of three degrees and no more, that
is to say 'Entered Apprentice, the Fellow
Craft and the Master Mason, including the
Supreme Order of the Holy Royal Arch'. This
has been the position for nearly 200 years
and will remain unchanged.
However, since many members of the
Craft are members of these Orders, I am
pleased to acknowledge formally their
existence and regularity, and in particular
their sovereignty and independence.
The best known of these Orders are:
Mark, Ancient and Accepted Rite, Knights
Templar, Royal and Select Masters, Royal
Ark Mariner, Red Cross of Constantine,
Allied Masonic Degrees, Order of the Secret
Monitor and Knight Templar Priests. I also
accept the valuable role they play in
providing additional scope for Brethren to
extend their Masonic research in interesting
and enjoyable ways.”
