NEWSLETTER 36 Repro 11/5/07 11:45 AM Page 30 FLOWER POWER BEGONIA SPECIES & HYBRIDS A look into the vast world of these fascinating plants BEGONIAS – where do they come from? If you draw two lines around the earth between the 'Tropic of Cancer' and 'Tropic of Capricorn' in between those lines you will find a natural habitat of begonias. There is every type of growing habit you can think of. Within this band there are many mini-climates: Rain forests, cloud forests, mountain peaks, high plateaus, deep valleys, wide valleys, plains, and coastal beaches. Temperatures in these areas go from steamy heat to below freezing, and humidity varies, too. Begonias are found in almost all climates, mostly but not exclusively, near water. There is a begonia to suit all types of conditions and growing skills. Spray against powder mildew as a prevention once a fortnight. Begonias do not like: Stagnant air - Draughts - Leaf shine Dry air - Water logging - Dense soil Dark position in winter - Direct sunlight Too much fertiliser - Cold feet These are two greenhouses in W Bro Terry Tasker's Greenhouses at Southport. He is a Past Master of Victoria Lodge No 2360 and holds the National collection of these non-tuberous begonias. 28 Propagation of Rex Begonias is achieved by the wedge method Small "V" shaped cuttings by cutting into a leaf are stood end upwards in Coir or Soilless compost. They soon root at the veins in the leaves with clusters of shoots appearing in through the compost and it is then that they should be potted up into a 3" pot. Cuttings of Cane begonias can be placed around the side of the pot and left to root and grow until pot bound. Place cuttings in the propagator set at 70˚F bottom heat. Keep moist. NEWSLETTER 36 Repro 11/5/07 11:45 AM Page 31 RYAN GIVEN A DREAM HOLIDAY PUDSEY Freemasons combined to help provide a dream holiday for a youngster who suffers from muscular dystrophy, which confines him to a wheelchair. Fourteen-year-old Ryan is the grandson of W Bro Bob Alexander, Master of Thorsby Lodge No 4920, and faced an operation which would further reduce his mobility, making it difficult to travel abroad. Bro Stephen Schofield, Lodge of Benevolence No 5612, heard, quite by chance, of Ryan’s dearest wish to visit Disneyland and, together with W Bro Michael Schofield, W Bro Steven Sheard, Master of Goderich Lodge No 1211, and W Bro Robert Groves decided to support W Bro Alexander and his wife, Sue, in their fund-raising efforts on Ryan’s behalf. A Race Night was held at Pudsey Masonic Hall; Mrs Sue Schofield embarked on a sponsored skydive which raised over £700; and further donations from the Pudsey family of Lodges enabled a cheque for £4695 to be presented to W Bro Alexander. Ultimately over £5000 was raised and Ryan and his grandparents were able to go to Disneyland for an unforgettable experience. Our pictures show Ryan (and friend!) enjoying the delights of Disneyland; Mrs Sue Schofield on her sponsored skydive and Masters of the various Pudsey Lodges presenting the cheque to W Bro Alexander. SUPPORT FOR YOUNG CRICKETERS MEMBERS of Lightcliffe Lodge No 3332 have done their bit to support Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Charity representative W Bro Bert Barrands was pleased to hand over a £500 cheque from the PGM’s Fund in support of the John Featherstone Memorial bookstall at Headingley The grant has helped purchase new containers for the book display and storage. The bookstall has raised over £52,000 since its formation in support of young county cricketers. Anyone who wishes to donate cricket books should contact Vivien Stone on 0113 2590835.
