From the Principal’s Desk
The term is really gathering momentum
as we move from one event to the next.
I am always so impressed with the way
the children cope with various events
and demands on their time. It is amazing
how the children who are really busy
always manage to cope with everything.
Thanks of course must go to you the
parents for your support in all this.
Big Walk
For our annual Big Walk tomorrow we
would like everyone to be here by 09:00
so that we can leave promptly at 09:30.
The Pre-Primary children will, as always,
walk around the school grounds. The
Junior Primary will walk up Howard Avenue
to just before the Woburn Avenue
bridge, where they will each receive a
bottle of water before their return to
school. The Senior Primary children will
continue into Westdene and round
Korsman’s Pan. They will receive their
water before proceeding round the Pan.
The Tuckshop will be open from 09:00
so you may purchase refreshments for
yourselves before the walk or in the
course of the morning. There will also
be bacon rolls and boerewors rolls on
sale and tea and eats at the teagarden.
Special thanks to School and Leisure
for sponsoring the water.
Choral Verse
We have received the times for the
events at St Dominic’s, if you would like
to attend and support your child and the
school. They are as follows:
Monday 1 October
Grade 1: 14:00 to 14:45
Grade 2: 14:45 to 15:30
Grade 3: 15:30 to 16:00
Tuesday 2 October
Grade 4: 14:00 to 14:45
Grade 5: 14:45 to 15:30
Grade 6: 15:30 to 16:15
Grade 7: 16:15 to 17:00
The children will all be travelling by bus
from school at the allocated time and
we would like them to return to school
with their group for security reasons.
They will be supervised by their teachers
before they leave for St Dominic’s and
at school afterwards.
Senior Choir
The Senior Choir took part in the Choir
Festival arranged by the Catholic
Schools Office on Thursday. We boarded
the two buses with much excitement
early on Thursday morning, and
after a traffic-filled trip, arrived at the
Linder Auditorium where we joined the
other 27 Choirs from various Catholic
schools. Seating was at a premium,
and as one choir went on stage, the
choir leaving the stage took their
seats! Over 1000 young voices joined
as one in singing the two massed
items, World in Union and Amabhayisikili,
under the expert baton of Sue
Cock. The enthusiasm shown by all the
choristers was a great encouragement
to each choir as they sang their two
chosen items and any nervous feeling
melted away as soon as they set foot
on the stage. St Columba’s Senior
Choir was especially commended for
their excellent behaviour while waiting
to go on stage and also in the Auditorium.
Their singing of Ukuthula (with
selected soloists) and El Cumbanchero
brought thunderous applause from the
audience.
It was a unique experience to be part of
such an ambitious undertaking – you
can be very proud of your own chorister!
Music
Many thanks to the Perumal family
(Liam –5H, Tegan-2H, Jayden-0N) for
donating two beautiful traditional African
drums to the music room.

CONCERT
Practice for our concert is well under the
way and we are very busy with all the
preparations.
Please have all costumes at school by
next week Wednesday. Please check with
your child’s teacher what needs to be
done. We will be having a full dress rehearsal
with make-up on Friday 5 October
and will need everything ready by
then.
We would like to appeal to you for old
sheets as we would like to make a cover
for our back drop. It is a huge frame and
we need a few sheets to cover it for protection.
Our deepest sympathy goes to the Durand
family (Dylan in GrR) on the passing
of his great grandfather. May you feel
deeply comforted at this sad time.
Please send your child to school with
shorts as we have tumbling on Wednesdays
and dresses/skirts (of course this
applies to the girls) are inappropriate for
the exercises done.

Athletics
Last Friday a group of our runners took
part in a friendly Athletics meeting at
Sacred Heart College in Observatory. The
children were all very excited and some
of them were quite nervous at the prospect
of competing with children from
other schools.
It was a well organised fun afternoon.
There were ten other Catholic schools
that took part (like De la Salle, St Matthew’s,
Holy Rosary, Holy Family Convent).
Our U7 and U8 children had to run in the
U9 age group and still did well. Mashau
Madzie (U7) came 7 th, Erin Lazarus (U8)
came 4 th, Joshua Steyn (U7) came 6 th
and Khaya Sithole (U8) came 8 th in the
100m.
Other results were: Adrian Roberts 1 st in
his 100m; Ndivhuwo Madzie 6 th ; Nathan
Ukunda 1 st; Daniella Zulu 1 st; Cameron
Dansie 2 nd ; Zama Vilakazi 3 rd and
Fuaad Mohammed 4 th.
Our long distance runners: Daniella
Brown and Marlon Dickerson ran 800m
and came 8 th and 4 th respectively; Calvin
Borrageiro and Justin Brown ran 1200m
for the Opens and Justin came 5 th.
Very well done to all our runners. You did
St Columba’s proud!
Sports and Cultural Awards
We have traditionally had our Sports
and Cultural awards ceremony the last
week in October however we realise
that this does mean that the cricket and
swimming seasons are very short as
from the point of view of attendance.
On beginning to look at the attendance
registers with a view to awarding certificates
we feel it would be fairer to all the
children concerned to give them a few
more weeks. We have therefore decided
to move the Awards Ceremony to
Wednesday 7 November.
Please make a note of this in your diaries.
