From the Principal’s Desk
The tragedy and sadness of the last two
weeks has brought us all together in such
a positive way. Everybody has come together
to support Vicky and her daughter
Margaret. Your wonderful generosity will
be a big help to the family in the weeks
and months to come. Thank you to all
who were able to attend the funeral and
who assisted with very generous donations
in this regard, and thank you to all
who are part of the Meals with Meaning
initiative. It is such a privilege for me to be
part of such a caring community.
A special request for magazines
The Reader’s Digest magazine provides so
much reading pleasure. The Grade 6 and
Grade 7 students of English, would be
grateful if any families have these magazines,
are would be prepared to donate
them to be read for enjoyment. Magazines
may be delivered to Miss Ware’s classroom
or to the front office. Thank you.
Fun Day
Mrs Sylvia Haywood who is on the
Board of the Avril Elizabeth Home, and
Cathy Jooste who is the present CEO of
the Home joined us for Assembly on
Wednesday morning and we handed
over the money raised. With an additional
donation we collected
R26,475.00. Cathy explained to the
children that there are over 100 people
at the Home ranging in age from very
young to much more mature people.
There is a lady there who is over 40
and has a very deformed back so she
cannot sit up and needs a customised
wheelchair. Cathy said they would like
to put the money raised by St Columba’s
towards this. When she heard how
much we had raised both she and Sylvia
were overwhelmed. The wheelchair
costs just over R26,000.00 so they can
now order it. Thank you for making this
possible.

Auditory Skills
In our very visual world, our children’s Auditory
Skills are not as well-developed as
they could be. Children need to be helped
to develop and improve these skills. These
exercises can be done in the car, in the
bath, 5 minutes before bed, during story
time.
� Playing “I spy” e.g. something that
begins with “t”.
� Rhyming words e.g. Give me a word
that rhymes with cat- mat, fat, sat
� Odd one out- which item doesn’t
belong- car, bus, dog, train- Answerdog
� Get your child to tell you why it
doesn’t belong.
� Read a page in a book. Ask your
child questions about what you have
read.
� Give your child 3 numbers, words or
sounds. They must repeat them
back to you. Increase the number
that you give them.
� Give your child a sentence e.g. It is
very cold outside. It must be repeated.
� Give your child instructions to carry
out e.g. Put the red block on the
book.
� Categories- your child must list
items in that category e.g. transport-
car, bus, train, tricycle Grade 0 –
what sound do you hear at the beginning
of e.g. mom, dog, rat

� Grade R- what sound do you hear
at the beginning, in the middle
and at the end of the word?
We would like to thank you for your understanding
during this difficult time with
Vicky and her grandchildren. To update
you, the children have been discharged
from the hospital and are at home with
Vicky.
We have had several incidents where a
parent urgently needs to be contacted
from the school regarding your child and
due to the incorrect number this has
been almost impossible. We appeal to
you to please update any change in telephone
number or email address a.s.a.p.

School will close for mid-term break next
Friday (29 June) and reopen on Monday
9 July. It will be a normal school day on
the 29 th with AfterCare on Friday afternoon.
Please check the lost property bin as we
will be donating the clothes during the
mid-term break to the needy. There are
lovely warm jackets that will be appreciated
where there is a need.
There are a lot of germs doing the rounds
which is normal in winter. Please ensure
that your child gets adequate vitamins
during this time.

Netball
What a fantastic day we had at the St
Dunstan’s Winter Sports Festival on
Wednesday. We were blessed with a
warm winter’s day filled with energy and
enthusiasm from our girls.
The Grade 1s took part in 7 games and
despite feeling tired towards the end of
the morning each player played their
best in every game. The results were: 4
wins, 1 draw, 2 losses.
The Grade 2s did just as well with 4
wins, 2 draws and 1 loss.
The U/9 results were: 5 wins and 2
draws. They played such beautiful netball,
and the culmination of a season’s
hard work was very evident.
