Joliet Iron Works Historic Site
www.fpdwc.org
For decades after the Joliet Iron Works´ closing in the
1930s, the foundations of the buildings that once
were the lifeblood of Joliet lay all but forgotten. But in
the early 1990s the Forest Preserve purchased the
property with the goal of preserving this important
link to Joliet’s past. Since the grand reopening in
August 1998, the 51-acre Joliet Iron Works Historic
Site has been visited by thousands of people. What
they find is a 1.5-mile paved walkway that runs along
the foundations of the former factory site. Beside
each foundation are a total of 17 information stations
that describe the contributions that were made to
the iron-making process at this location and the
steelman´s story, which is illustrated by graphics.
