I-102Website: ........... www.behtek.come-mail: .............. behlingd@luhsd.net or d_behling@behtek.comCourse DescriptionThis course is a one-semester course designed to acquaint students with the basic concepts of sewing,including pattern and fabric selection, layout, construction, finishing, hand and machine sewing. <strong>Fashion</strong><strong>Design</strong> is a service-learning project-based class and all projects will be done in class. Students may nottake any sewing projects home until they have been completed and graded.Sufficient class time will be provided to students to complete the projects assigned. Students will beexpected to attend class and complete the assigned work. If a student does not stay on task, they willnot complete the work and will have to come in before school to work on their project. All majorprojects have a participation bonus attached to completing the project on time.Projects will be graded based on completion, neatness, and following the teacher’s instructions.SuppliesWhile supplies will be provided by the school, the finished projects will be donated and/or madeavailable for sale. The students will be creating the following: quilt block; pillowcase, girl’s sun dress, andcinch sack.While there will be tools and materials available, most students find it more rewarding and satisfying tohave their own. A basic sewing kit contains the following:• Plastic shoe box / sewing box• 2 pair of scissors (inexpensive for paper, quality for fabric)• Straight pins and pin cushion• Cloth tape measure• Seam ripper• Hand sewing needlesStudents will be creating the following projects (list with the required supplies):8-inch quilt blockPillowcaseSun Dress• Small / medium pieces ofcotton fabric in thestudent’s chosen colortheme. This fabric can beold clothes (men’s dressshirts work very nice).• Neutral colored thread• ¾ yard focus fabric• ¼ yard contrasting cufffabric• Accent trim (1 ¼ inch by42 inches) optional• Matching thread• 1 yard fabric• 14 inches ¼ inch elastic• 2 yards (1 package)matching/contrasting biastape• Matching thread


For those students who do not wish to supply their own supplies, the school will provide basic suppliesto learn the concepts and complete the projects. Projects made with supplies provided by the studentwill belong to the students and can be taken home after they have been graded. Projects made withsupplies provided by the school will belong to the school and may be donated or made available for sale.Grades for Achievement (LUHSD Administrative Regulation AR-5121)Grades for achievement shall be reported each marking period as follows:Outstanding Achievement/Above grade level Standards ...................................... Students with excessive truancies (7 per semester grading period) may be given a failing gradeand not receive credit for the class as per LUHSD Administrative Regulation AR-5121.Classroom Expectations and Rules1. No food or drink at the computers and/or sewing areas (this includes water).2. Have a pen and/or pencil available each class.3. Provide basic sewing kit and supplies as noted above.4. Turn off cellular/electronic devices during instructional minutes.5. Complete projects on time and to the best of your ability.6.
