MAITLAND<br />
Maitland is the geographical centre of <strong>Yorke</strong><br />
<strong>Peninsula</strong>, ideally placed near the fertile <strong>Yorke</strong> Valley,<br />
only fifteen minutes drive from the east or west coast.<br />
Maitland is the main service and shopping<br />
centre for Central <strong>Yorke</strong> <strong>Peninsula</strong>. As well as a<br />
modern hospital and aged care facility, there are<br />
two schools.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Maitland Historic Walk is a great way to get<br />
to know the many colonial buildings that grace<br />
Maitland’s streets. Situated in the main street, the<br />
<strong>Yorke</strong> Valley Hotel’s façade has changed little since<br />
being built in 1877. <strong>Guide</strong>s for the Historic Walk can<br />
be obtained from the District Council Office, the<br />
Chatt Centre or from several local businesses.<br />

Maitland Markets<br />
<strong>The</strong> Maitland Markets are an initiative of the local<br />
Progress Association. Situated between the Town<br />
Hall and the Chatt Centre, the market is open every<br />
Thursday and Friday, 10 am to 4 pm and has a range<br />
of interesting goods for sale.<br />
Clydesdale Sculpture<br />
Representing a bygone era when farmers were<br />
dependent on their horses, Maitland’s cold bronze<br />
Clydesdale sculpture was unveiled on Maitland<br />
Show Day, 2006. A result of over three months<br />
work by sculptor Ben Van Zetten, it stands near<br />
the Maitland Town Hall, and weighs more than<br />
one tonne.<br />

Situated on Robert Street, adjacent the Town Hall,<br />
the Chatt Centre is a great place to source tourist<br />
information. Open Monday to Friday 10 am to 4<br />
pm, the Centre acts as a telecentre for the district<br />
with helpful advice on the use of computers and<br />
the internet. <strong>The</strong>re is a meeting/conference room<br />
for hire (complete with computers) and also a hall<br />
with all proceeds going back to the community.<br />
<strong>The</strong>re is plenty of parking on site and access for<br />
tourists with boats and caravans.<br />
