PORT VINCENT The placid waters of Gulf St. Vincent are an attraction for sailing and fishing enthusiasts at Port Vincent, while its deeper waters also lure those in search of the big catch of fish. Port Vincent is one of the Peninsula’s bigger resorts, popular with families for many years because of its safe, sheltered beaches. Gala Day culminates with a spectacular fireworks display that night. Port Vincent Aquatic Centre The Port Vincent Aquatic Centre has been operating for more than twenty years. School groups from all parts of the State come to the Centre to undertake courses in kayaking, surfing, body boarding, fishing, small boat handling, sailing, sailboarding and snorkelling under the guidance of highly qualified local instructors. Australia’s Tidiest Town Named “Australia’s Tidiest Town” in 2004, Port Vincent continues to be beautifully maintained by the group’s volunteer workers. In 2005, Port Vincent was inducted into the KESAB Hall of Fame. Marina Development Port Vincent’s marina is operated by the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia and constitutes 90 berths ranging from 10 to 30 metres. Marina amenities include toilets, showers and laundry facilities, an all-weather boat ramp and ample car park space. The Stansbury and Port Vincent Wooden and Classic Boats Association’s biennial regatta will be held in April, 2012. Marine Studies Centre Marine life can be studied at Port Vincent School where they have a Marine Studies Centre. The Marine Centre is open Monday to Friday for visits (by appointment only) during school terms. Where possible, students will provide a guided tour. Gold coin donation appreciated. The Studies Centre website is www.vincentps.sa.edu.au PRICE Price, one of Yorke Peninsula’s east coast ports, is home to Cheetham Salt Limited, one of the Peninsula’s largest industries and the biggest salt refinery in the Southern Hemisphere. Cheetham harvests an average of 150,000 tonnes of salt annually from its coastal evaporative pans, refining the raw product to create various grades of salt. Cheetham has customers throughout Australia and exports in bulk to many overseas countries using the nearby Ardrossan jetty. Price is a popular holiday destination, with caravan park accommodation, barbecue and picnic areas and boat launching facilities from the town’s all-weather (tidal) boat ramp. Of historical interest is a causeway extending through the mangrove swamps where ketches from other ports moored with supplies for the town, and back-loading mallee roots for firewood. Other popular attractions are the scenic drive to Winters Hill, taking in views across the Gulf and the Clinton-Price 6.2km walk weaving through mangrove and bush lands which offers the chance to view unique mangrove forests, tidal samphire flats and a huge variety of bird life. STANSBURY Situated on the east coast of Yorke Peninsula in the shelter of beautiful Oyster Bay, Stansbury is an ideal destination for family holidays, fishing or just relaxing the hours away. Stansbury offers seasonal beach and jetty fishing with an all-tide three lane boat ramp for the boating enthusiasts. A swimming pontoon is situated at the jetty. There is a well-equipped, fenced children’s playground on the foreshore, just a short walk from the town centre and foreshore caravan park accommodating children of all ages. Another swimming pontoon is located here, along with toilets and changerooms. The well-maintained foreshore offers plenty of barbecue and picnic facilities. A 5km coastal walking trail from the caravan park, south to Pitts Cutting, offers great views across the gulf. The cliff top at Mill’s Gully is a photo stop and picnic area on the northern boundary of Stansbury, offers good scenic views of the town, jetty and oyster farms. Visitor Information Southern Yorke Peninsula Visitor Information Centre is located in the old Post Office; open from 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday, and from 10am to 2pm on weekends from October through to April. Drop in for information, regional maps, tourism guides and accommodation listings. Or use the internet facilities and browse their great range of affordable gifts and souvenirs. There is a large variety of accommodation from the foreshore caravan park with beach front, shaded, lawned sites and deluxe en-suite villas, to motels, holiday homes, flats and units available for holiday rental within the town.
