PRICE
Price, one of Yorke Peninsula’s east coast ports, is
home to Cheetham Salt Limited, one of the Peninsula’s
largest industries and the biggest salt refinery in the
Southern Hemisphere.
Cheetham harvests an average of 150,000 tonnes
of salt annually from its coastal evaporative pans,
refining the raw product to create various grades of
salt. Cheetham has customers throughout Australia
and exports in bulk to many overseas countries
using the nearby Ardrossan jetty.
Price is a popular holiday destination, with
caravan park accommodation, barbecue and picnic
areas and boat launching facilities from the town’s
all-weather (tidal) boat ramp.
Of historical interest is a causeway extending
through the mangrove swamps where ketches from
other ports moored with supplies for the town, and
back-loading mallee roots for firewood.
Other popular attractions are the scenic drive
to Winters Hill, taking in views across the Gulf and
the Clinton-Price 6.2km walk weaving through
mangrove and bush lands which offers the chance
to view unique mangrove forests, tidal samphire
flats and a huge variety of bird life.
