YORKETOWN Yorketown, another of the area’s inland towns, has plenty of services and attractions for visitors to Southern Yorke Peninsula. Historical Windmill Up until the early 1900’s one of Yorketown’s old engineering shops was making windmills of its own design, which were seen on plenty of farms locally, and even in other parts of Australia. One such windmill has been restored by the Historical Society and is working in the car park on Minlaton Road. Photos from the Past The Historical Society has over 1,000 photographs depicting the area’s pioneering days. This display can be seen in the old Courthouse, on Edithburgh Road, near the town centre, on Fridays, 10am to 12 noon, or by arrangement with Lesley May 8852 1372 or Bill May 8852 1104. A smaller, enclosed playground is next to the Historical Society’s building on Edithburgh Road. To the north of Yorketown are the golf links with watered fairways meaning the course is playable all year round. A summer competition runs from October to March with visitors welcome (green fees payable). To the north-east is an air strip which services normal air traffic as well as air ambulance service planes undertaking medical transfers. Vehicles must be registered and operators must hold an appropriate class of licence for that vehicle. Because four-wheeled motorbikes cannot be registered other than by primary producers for use on their properties, they cannot be used in the above areas.
