A friend suggested to me ayear ago that she would like to have a first aid kitfor her family so I have recently put together somehomeopathic first aid kits for other families to useat home. The kits include a variety of remedies thattreat a wide variety of first aid situations. Some ofus may want a healthier alternative to conventionalmeds, or are sensitive to over the counter drugs,or may want to use homeopathic remedies alongwith their conventional first aid kit. Regardless, it’sa great idea to have a homeopathic first aid kit, because the remedies are small and easy to carry, and can help in so many first aid situations. In thesekits, there are remedies for stings and insect bites, but a mini material medica pamphlet will helpyou choose which remedy would be best in yoursituation. For example, say you have vomiting anddiarrhea with a headache: if it’s brought on by foodpoisoning it’s one remedy, if it’s brought on bybeing in the sun for too long it’s another remedy,if it’s brought on by drinking too much alcohol it’sa different remedy. Another example is for feversthat come on suddenly, sore throat or colds thatcome on very quickly, each would have differentsymptoms, and require a different remedy. Someother examples are:Arnica 30ch/1M- for bruises, bumps, contusions, muscle soreness, shock, and even beneficial postoperatively in dental proceduresEuphrasia 30ch- injuries to the eye specifically, includes acute pink eye, scratches to the eyeRuta 30ch- injuries to ligaments and tendons, sprains and strains accompanied by pain andstiffnessTabacum 30ch- motion sickness with nausea anddizziness, caused by travel in boat, car, plane, etcHOMEOPATHIC HEALINGSarah TraskBKin, DSHomMed Hons, HD(RHom.)Doctor of Homeopathic Medicine“Homeopathy cures a large percentage of cases, more thanany other method of treatment and is beyond all doubt safer, more economical, and the most complete medical science.”~Mahatma Gandhi112 Front St., Unit 116, Wolfville, NS (902) 542-2317www.homeopathichealing.ca sarah@homeopathichealing.caUrtica Urens 30ch- insect bites with violentitching, nettle stings, hives or acute rash withitchingThis is just five of twenty one remedies that areincluded in the kit which is as small as a sandwichcontainer. There are also remedies for sleeplessness/jetlag, burns (first and second degree), shock/grief/fright, puncture wounds, acute bladder infection, styes, bone fractures, indigestion, food poisoning, and the list goes on. Each remedy is specific to afew complaints and the book that comes in the kitdescribes how to use the homeopathic remedies. It’s a wonderful addition to your first aid treatmentat home and while travelling!

6 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010SummertimeRelaxationMia LockhartOwner; Eau SpaWe get more social in the sun. Warm weather, bbq’s, vacations and longerdays open our schedules to time together with family and friends. Make a planthis summer to find new ways to encourage health, wellness and relaxation inyour gatherings, and everyone will reap the benefits. Not only will you have agreat time, you’ll feel great too!Summer provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to get outside, increase their activity, and avoid a year-round sedentary lifestyle. But summeralso holds risks such as heat, skin cancer andeven tetanus. No matter what summertimeactivity you choose to participate in - fun andgames with family or friends at the park, a cooland refreshing swim, or a backyard barbecue- the hot and humid days can take a toll onyou and your family. It may be tempting tolet your guard down on vacation, but youcan have fun and stay healthy away fromhome and take your healthy lifestyle with you.As your family plans quality time together, incorporate your regular healthy habits intoyour summer - or take advantage of the timeto start new ones.“For some of us, the beginning of thesummer is a better time for introspectionand thoughtful change. We are motivated toplan something new when children get a break from school, many families takevacations and we all seem to enjoy life at the more leisurely pace that summerbrings,” Dr. Joan Lang, chairwoman of the department of psychiatry at SaintLouis University School of Medicine noted.Take advantage of the summer weather to enjoy walks or light exercise, such as gardening. It may improve your balance, build muscle mass, lowerblood pressure, improve cardiac health, and provide other health benefits bothemotional and physical. Whether it’s gardening or exercising, ease into it andgradually build your endurance. Watch the heat and your fluid intake, and youcan enjoy summer in good health. There is much that you can do that will helpyou and your family stay cool and healthy during the upcoming hot wintermonths. Most importantly take time to smell the flowers, hug loved ones and enjoythe local harvest of fruits and vegetables. Summer brings smiles to the face andenergy to the soul.Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listeningto the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a wasteof time. ~Sir John LubbockWhat is without periods of rest will not endure. ~OvidEvery now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come backto your work your judgment will be surer. Go some distance away because thenthe work appears smaller and more of it can be taken in at a glance and a lack ofharmony and proportion is more readily seen.~Leonardo Da VinciInspiring you to RelaxMia LockhartOwner; Eau Spa at the Old Orchard Innwww.eauspa.caENTER AND$ 100 00READER’S CONTESTGift CertificatefromJackson’sBoxed MeatsHere’s the rules........Simply go through this Apple Valley Scoop and find an advertiser thathas gone “Above and Beyond” to serve you in the past.Let us know who they were and what they did to go“Above and Beyond”Send your entry by email to:contest@applevalleyscoop.comContest ends July 6th 2010GODD LUCK!FeaturingLocal, Organic and freshEvery DaySoups, Pannies, Salads& Desertsilly espresso, Cappuccino,& LattésJust US Organic Fair TradeCoffees375 Main StreetKentville Nova ScotiaB4N 1K7Phone: 902-365-3322www.pulsiferflowers.comflowers.pulsifer@ns.sympatico.ca

8 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010Egos + $$$$ = ????To my fellow CanucksWhat do you get when you add egos andmoney? — More taxes and debt when it involvesgovernments. Now that’s a GEE… as in GEE WHIZ WHAT’SGOING ON with this G8 and G20 stuff that neverseems to produce anything of benefit to the peopleof the plant, excluding, of course, those participatingand those reporting on the meetings.Being an accountant, I wonder what the actualcost of these two meetings in Canada will be? Wewill never know, but lets take some obvious guesses.Canadian taxpayers, according to the latestreports, will definitely be paying at least $1 billionfor security. On top of this there will be the costof travel and accommodation for the Canadianattendees, say $1/2 million, plus another few millionfor the meeting facilities, and more millions for themeals and entertainment of the delegates and theirappendages. We Canadian taxpayers will also be on the hookfor all the promo material, consultants fees, planningcosts, support staff, communication costs etc.,etc., which undoubtedly will consume many moremillions of dollars.Hopefully, each country will pay its own accommodationand meals for all their delegates, supportstaffs and entourages. But, I would be greatly surprisedif a good chunk of this, too, isn’t charged toCanadian taxpayers (we will probably never know). And then there are the travel costs for eachcountry’s assemblages. This boggles the mind a bit, however, lets take a guess of from $50 million up tocover all those big personalized jets, with their pilots, hostesses and ground personnel. Also, we need to consider the costs incurred in theplanning by each country for the meetings. And who pays for all the new clothes each delegatewears for the photo ops and sessions? All told, the total costs could reach anywhere from$2 to $5 billion – and for what?Nothing more than: published pictures of gloating, smiling, hand shaking heads of countries messagingtheir egos; a few stand up group pictures ofthese same individuals for the posterity of their families;other pictures of them “working”; and a closingstatement of doublespeak non accomplishments.Taxpayers of the world should be disgusted withthe shenanigans of these 20 people supposedlymeeting to solve some of the world’s major problems, but always failing to do so, while spendingbillions of dollars — especially when there is somuch suffering that these same dollars could beginto eliminate.Meanwhile, there is a system available, with theassistance of 33 world counsellors (selected by thepeople) that eliminates taxes and poverty, providesfree health care and education and allows thepeople of the world to decide what is to be done. This system is called Facilitism (derived from theword facilitate). How Can I Reducethe Chlorine usein my SwimmingPool?Jenn McGrathHolland Home LeisureJune 2010- Apple Valley Scoop- 9Residential swimming pools require a 1-3 ppm level ofFree Available Chlorine (or 2-4ppm of Bromine) to keepthe water safe and free of harmful bacteria, but thereare ways to reduce the amount of chlorine needed tomaintain proper levels.Balance Your Water: Chlorine is most efficientwhen the pH of the water is between 7.4-7.6. When thepH is too low the chlorine works over actively, resulting inthe chlorine being used up faster than normal, resultingin more chlorine needed to maintain 1-3 ppm.Stabilize Your Chlorine: Sunlight is constantlytrying to dissipate chlorine and draw it from the water.Stabilizer (or Cyanuric Acid) acts as a sunscreen andprotects the chlorine from the sun, keeping it in the poollonger. Without stabilizer, you could be using over twicethe amount of chlorine needed to keep a good chlorinelevel.Add BioGuard Pool Refresh: Pool Refresh is anall natural liquid containing enzymes that will digestorganics in the water. Chlorine will sanitize the water, butit will also attack organics and try to break them down. With Pool Refresh in the water digesting the organics(swimmer wastes like perspiration, body oils, etc), thechlorine only has to worry about bacteria.Install a Nature 2 Cartridge: This cartridge caneasily be adapted to almost any pool and it uses mineralsto help sanitize the water as it passes through. Thiscartridge will not eliminate the need for chlorine, butwith the cartridge helping to sanitize it will greatly reducethe amount of chlorine being used.Keep in mind that, as per Health Canada, the only 2legal sanitizers for a residential swimming pool is chlorineor bromine, but there are ways to reduce the amountused to maintain proper levels. Happy Father’s Day to allthose special dads!!Enjoy your special day on June 20th.What I like about my Dad is that he hasnever once not been there for me. I don’tknow if he is the smartest, or the nicest, orthe best, but I certainly think he is; I amdefinitely a daddy’s girl. I am truly happywhen I’m just sitting in the living room withhim, watching our favourite shows together. And we have a lot of favourite shows. Wehave the same sense of humor, so we’re oftenlaughing together. We go to the movies a lottogether, too, sometimes just because I wantto see it. He pays attention to things thathe really shouldn’t care less about, becauseI care about them. He reads tabloids, andI like to think it’s so he’ll know what I’mtalking about. If I miss any news, he willquickly fill me in. I remember him readingto me when I was a little kid, and I grewup watching him read. I love to read now. When I moved away for university, I knewthat my father would miss me, and I wouldmiss him too, but he completely supportedmy decision to go. He helped me move.Eventually, I moved back, but hesupported that decision, too. He only wantswhat’s best for me. He wants whatever Iwant. He’s there. He takes me to work when I need it. If Ineed a drive to the mall, or to a friend’s, he’sthere. I know it sounds like simple things tosome, but to me, they’re great things. I’venever needed anything else, but I know thatif I did, he’d give it to me. Not only do I notwant to imagine my life without my father,I simply can’t; and I can’t imagine who Iwould be without my father. June 2010- Apple Valley Scoop- 13THE PARENTDROP OFFAnother reason tolearn to drive. Soon. It’sThe LawFor aReasonWhen was the last time you read the Nova ScotiaDrivers Handbook? The answer could range from acouple of days to over 60 years ago. Testing to geta licence is quite simple and does not prepare mostdrivers for understanding the requirements of theMotor Vehicle Act. Many do not understand thatthe laws are there to protect them and the other‘road users’.Many of our traffic laws are constantly beingbroken by drivers who feel it’s alright, as long asthey don’t get caught. Unfortunately, if they don’tget caught they usually do end up having a collisionor put other road users at risk.I have often had experienced drivers ask mewhy a certain stretch of road is set at a lower speedstating that ‘I could easily drive my car 80-100 andkeep control’. That may be true, but it is a 50 zoneto protect other road users also. Could you getstopped in time if a child around the turn or overthe hill decided to ride their bike across the streetat the same time? Could you get stopped in time ifa pedestrian stepped out from behind a parked caror a driver pulled into the road from their driveway?Red lights and stop signs mean you must stopyour vehicle. This permits you to complete aneffective scan of the intersection, not only for othervehicles, but any crosswalks you are about to driveover.Another serious problem is vehicles beingdriven across the centre of the road. This happensfrequently when drivers cut off the left hand turns, instead of steering around the centre of the road. This forces oncoming traffic to react to them orcauses a collision. Distracted drivers are often seendrifting across centre lines. You can avoid this bymaking every second glance well ahead in yourown lane. The list goes on. It is our responsibility tounderstand and follow the Motor Vehicle Act toprotect ourselves and all other road users.Submitted by Greg Robar, Young Drivers of CanadaYoung Drivers’ Collisionfree! “Anniversaries of aLoved Ones Death”H C Lindsay Funeral Homes & CrematoriumDealing with the loss of a loved can be one of themost difficult times any one can be expected to gothrough. As we deal with loss we also deal with newlife experiences. The first year after losing someone isextremely difficult; a cycle of winter, spring, summer, and fall will pass and months can fade without useven realizing that they have gone by. Years and yearsafter the loss, the anniversary of a death can remainvery difficult. The first set of holidays are always themost difficult for those who are bereaved. Eventswithout our loved ones the first time is always toughas families find new ways to mark the days; mourningchanges, maintaining old traditions, and establishingnew ones.People often hope that the anniversary will endone chapter of life and put certain feelings to rest. But the anniversary also presents an opportunity fordemoralization, which can be a helpful part of thegrieving process. Anniversary events enable peopleto share memories, appreciate positive changes thathave occurred, and look ahead to the future. Here are some examples of ways to help honor andcope with this trying time:1) Forgive Yourself: Grief immobilizes you. Realize grieftakes time to work through and hence, you maynot have accomplished everything you wanted toaccomplish in this period of loss. Write down all thethings you think you should have done and haven’tduring your time of grief. Look at these items and letthem go.H C LindsayFuneral Homes& CrematoriumBerwick538-9900Kentville678-2151New Ross689-2961www.lindsayfuneralhome.ca2) Forgive Your Lost Loved One: People are imperfect.Forgiving is a strong healing tool. Using ananniversary as a reminder to forgive someone helpsyou to heal and move on.3) Talk to People: Family and friends may not know aspecial anniversary is arriving soon or know what todo for you. Tell them your needs and wants duringthis time.4) Crying is Okay: Let the tears flow either when youare alone or in public. Crying is a natural outlet ofgrief. Do not apologize.5) Tell a Story: On anniversaries tell a story aboutyour loved one that was special and meaningful toyou. Stories help treasure the memories and passon special times to others of all generations. Loveshines through unique tales.6) Write Letters: Take the anniversary as an opportunityto write your thoughts and feelings. Talk about thegood times, things that you miss, times when it washard. Keep the letter, mail it or send it away in acreative manner. You might consider posting it onthe Internet at a grief or memorial site.7) Give Permission: Tell yourself it is okay to move onwith your life. Moving on doesn’t mean forgetting –it means living life now. Strive to do one thing newduring the next few weeks. Give yourself permissionto be happy.8) Remember the Pain of Others: Anniversaries of a lossusually don’t affect just one person. Take this timeto reconnect with other people who share this sameloss over dinner, a special event, or a beverage.9) Take Comfort in Your Faith: Use your faith as aplace to give your comfort and solace while you arehealing. Talk to others in your place of worship orfaith community and ask them to keep you in theirJune 2010- Apple Valley Scoop- 17prayers.10) Be Thankful: Grieving sometimes clouds the goodwe do have in our life. Be still for a few momentsand reflect on the blessings that grace your lifeeveryday. 18 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010Vanity, thyname is womanCarrie YeoOwner/TechnicianVanity, thy name is woman. Ohhh, there’s beensome mileage gotten out of this one. Many a manhas muttered it under his breath while looking athis watch; and I am sure I have said these wordsthrough clenched teeth at my reflection as I reachedfor yet another outfit that I somehow hoped wouldbe better than the four lying on the floor at my feet. The reality is, vanity has many different namesand is subject to perception so let’s look at this. For literary accuracy, I feel it is important to notethat this quote is actually a distortion of a line fromShakespeare’s Hamlet , “Frailty, thy name is woman”.While neither version would make the bumper ofGloria Steinem, it seems that some women wouldchoose being labelled frail over vain, so the questionremains- why is vanity such an ugly word?I have a surprising number of clients that feel itis very important for them to clarify to me duringa consultation, that they are not vain people. “I’mnot one to primp, I don’t fuss a lot with make upor my nails, I am just tired of plucking”, or “I’m notvain, you know- I don’t spend a lot of time in front ofthe mirror, but I hate the look and the feeling of thestubble and bumps”. And I reply, “Well, of courseyou’re tired of it!” and “Of course, you hate that lookDanielle de GraafBSc., RMTTherapeutic & RelaxationMassageSpecialized training in:• Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction• Deep Tissue Therapy• Basic Level Dr. Vodder’sManual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)Blue CrossDirect Billing Available902-582-7607Evenings and Weekends Availablecall: 690-7227TheManeAttraction Salon681-1981NEW CLIENTS!!Bring in this Ad!Receive a FREE tan or25% off any Hair orEsthetic ServiceLook Good....Feel Great!See you at:8943 Commercial St., New Minasand feeling!” That is not vanity- no one should haveto worry about those things.Vanity is defined as narcissistic self- idolatry. Beingso absorbed with yourself that you worship yourself. Idon’t know that I have come across too many peoplethat exhibit anything close to vanity. In fact, I thinkmost of us are way too hard on ourselves. You don’thave to be a princess or a movie star to want to takecare of yourself. It is not vanity to strive to put yourbest self forward, and care for yourself and the thingsaround you that you are responsible for. We wouldnever neglect our homes or yards for thirty or fortyyears without investing time , energy and moneyin their upkeep, the same applies to our bodies.(To refer to last month article about landscaping – Ithink landscaping -the kind you do in your yard- isthe ultimate vanity but that’s only because I am notgood at it and I envy those who are; but I digress)No one will argue that there is a direct linkbetween high self esteem and productivity in life. You should do everything you can do to build yourconfidence, whether it be learning or improvingskills, taking control of things you are unhappywith, or putting on your favourite lipstick. For somepeople it’s looking over their perfect mow lines ontheir manicured lawn that projects their best self. I’malmost done with the landscape analogies.Laser hair removal is not vanity; it is a smartefficient way to get closer to your own vision of yourbest self. Is it okay to have hair? 20 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010VIEWPOINTMark Parent Meaghan ParentThe Potter’s WheelAt first, it started out as a hobby. “Just a curiosity, more than anything,” explains Denise Aspinall, owner of Aspinall Pottery. But it quickly grew intomuch more. “Pottery became my creative outletand I was good at it, too,” she says. “I loved the feelof it, I loved working with the clay.”Following an apprenticeship in Cape Breton, where she refined her skills at the potter’s wheel,Aspinall opened her own studio in Wolfville—close to 30 years ago. Then, in 2004, aftertwo decades operating out of Port Williams, she opened her current studio in Canning.“The village has been very supportive... actuallythis year the town purchased their [Apple Blossom]Princess gifts from me,” Aspinall says, smiling.“It can be very slow here in the winter,” sheacknowledges. “But I have a healthy list of regularcustomers and I do wholesale orders for storesaround the province.”Her main outlets for selling pottery, besides herown studio, are the Wolfville Farmer’s Market andSaunders Tartans and Gifts in New Minas.Aspinall, the mother of two grown children, enjoys the flexibility of owning her own business. “Ican open and close as I wish,” she explains. “Plus,I like the control. Everything is done by me.” Allof her handmade pottery, which she describesas functional tableware, is also hand-painted byAspinall herself. She favours “a loose floral brushwork,” in muted blues and greens — a soft colourpalate which she finds most people appreciate. In the past two years, especially, Aspinall hasnoticed the by-local movement (at one time morefocused on food) has swung over to include thecraft, artisan world. “People really value buyingsomething made locally,” she says — weather it bea tourist to the area or a local looking to purchasea meaningful gift.In particular, “wedding gifts are a big, big partof my business,” she emphasizes. As the wedding/summer months dawn upon us, Aspinall preparesfor her busiest season.Aspinall Pottery is open by chance orappointment; (902) 582-7028.Mark Parent is former minister of the Environment,Labour and Workforce development and Agriculture.Meaghan Parent is his daughter and is a graduate ofKings School of Journalism.GREAT COMEBACKSMan: Haven’t I seen yousomeplace before?Woman: Yes, that’s why I don’tgo there anymore.Man: Is this seat empty?Woman: Yes, and this one willbe if you sit down.Man: So, what do you do for aliving?Woman: I’m a femaleimpersonator.Man: I would go to the end ofthe world for you.Woman: Yes, but would youstay there?Have a SafeSummer!Have you ever wondered what happens at a crash scene? Do you think about what life would be like withoutyour friend? TADD students have been helping their peers visualize those things over the past month. Withgraduation and summer festivals starting, they are concerned they will lose someone to an impaired driver.TADD groups at West Kings and Central Kings hosted the MADD multimedia show on May 11. The showopened with two volunteers having a Rock, Paper, Scissors challenge. The message? You have choices. Makewise ones. The video this year focused on the driver and the effect his unwise choice had on not only othersbut his life as it fell apart. The Central Kings students had built up to the presentation all week by citing a statistic about impaireddriving with the daily announcements. They also had their TADD POLL on the support column in the lobbywhere students could share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns with others.Northeast Kings was the scene of a Mock Crash on the front lawn at lunchtime. TADD students had arrangedfor Shaffer’s Towing to deposit a wrecked car at the school. Volunteers from the Canning Fire Department,EHS, and Kentville Police arrived with sirens blaring and ‘responded’ to the crash that left two students undertarps, one being cut from the car and the driver arrested.TADD President, Bryana Pearson, thanked the volunteers for helping them share their message. Fire ChiefScott Cruickshank responded that they appreciated the students setting it up. “This is one of the toughest callsfor Emergency Responders and if it helps prevent even one crash, it was worth it.”West Kings has plans for a visit from the Grim Reaper. He comes to the classroom and ‘selects’ a student togo with him. They sustain injuries through a makeup artist and return to class but cannot interact with anyonethe rest of the day. Disturbing? They hope so.The groups joined together to walk in the Apple Blossom Parade and hope to coordinate other events toremind people to be responsible so that everyone can make it home safely.M&GC A BAirport & Ferry ServiceServing: New Minas, Kentville andSurrounding areasClean Reliable Vans • Delivery ServiceCHILD SAFETY SEATS AVAILABLE!Safe Grad...call M&G Cab24/7 SERVICE691-2500

A couple of weeks later I got a call tocome in as floor director,” she said.Three months after that a BT co-host wasgoing on leave and Maria asked if she couldaudition as a fill-in, roving reporter. “Eight ornine years later,” she says, “here we are.”Born and raised in HalifaxMaria is a Halifax native – “a Grace baby,”she laughs - who went to high school atHalifax West on Dutch Village Road.“I was kind of shy in high school,” she says,“and am still kind of shy until I get to knowsomeone. Timid, I guess, until I figure out whoI’m talking to.”Still, she was active withinher school community. She wasclass rep, participated in ModelParliament, emceed fashionshows and worked on thestudent paper. One day “King’s came to ourhigh school and I rememberseeing their kiosk and thinkingit’d be so great to be ajournalist.”But she had always been toldthat science and commercewould butter the bread andshe was encouraged to pursuemore stereotypical professions:doctor, lawyer, singer, dancer. She says she took a math degree at Dalbecause she enjoyed it, but her fondness forbroadcasting was never too far away.“Near the end of my Science degree, mypriest approached me and asked if I’d liketo do a community television show,” furtherfanning her desire to pursue a career inbroadcast journalism.“The one-year program at King’s wasthe best thing I ever did,” she says happily.“My family was always supportive, but theyhad concerns. I found out recently from mybrother that my parents had said at the time,‘just let her do it, it’ll pass….’”It didn’t, and her career has been a successfilledcombination of preparation meetingopportunity ever since.Making It BigIn 2005, Maria won Making It Big, a NorthAmerican reality show that saw her competeagainst two other contestants for the title ofbest entertainment reporter.Still relatively new to the industry, Mariawas encouraged to enter “and I threw myname into the ring.”She received a questionnaire via e-mailshortly thereafter from the show’s producers, but Maria thought it was junk mail at firstand didn’t respond. She got a follow-up call acouple of days later and was told she had beenshortlisted for the competition “so I thought Ihad better fill it out right away,” she said witha chuckle. She competed against reporters from SanFrancisco and Vancouver “and I was still quitegreen at the time,” she admits. “I was thinking,‘I’ve been cast as the country bumpkin’ ormaybe for ‘the immigrant makes good story’and saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t know whatI’m in for.’”But after an intense five-day process andlots of pressure, Maria won. When askedif it changed anything for her, she said, “itwas an opportunity to see where we stoodagainst others in North America. It gave meIf you’ve never been to aThird World country, youjust don’t know howgood we have it here.”confidence, added profile and people noticedthe effort, which was great.”Life-changing experience, charitable effortsMaria’s accomplishments have continued togrow since then. She is much sought after asa speaker and presenter and she recently wona prestigious International Edward R. MurrowAward for Breakfast Television. It was the culmination of a life-changingjourney to Nicaragua with World Vision andit was a matter once again of preparationmeeting opportunity.“World Vision had a campaign a few yearsago looking for local personalities to go toNicaragua and do a story there,” Maria says.“Liz Rigney, producer Jody Jessome and I wentand did a review of all the people we met.”Maria’s story ran on BT and she entered itin the Murrow competition. “I had forgottenabout it,” she says, “until my news directorpulled me out of the newsroom one day andtold me I had won.“It was a nice way to cap off a life-changingtrip. If you’ve never been to a Third Worldcountry, you just don’t know how good wehave it here.”In addition to her work with World Vision,Maria lends her time and support to a widevariety of events and agencies including CTVsupportedorganizations such as the IWKHealth Centre, the Children’s Wish Foundationand the Canadian Cancer Society. It sounds hectic, but Maria says it’s all partof what she does. “Because of the job wedo here, charities approach us to front theirevents and it’s really not difficult to say yesbecause they are such good causes.”She cites a total team effort with co-workersat CTV to help out whenever possible “and wetry to do as much as we can. Being invitedback year after year, you create personalconnections, especially with the children atthe IWK. The least you can do is offer yourtime and what people call your talent,” shesaid with modest self-deprecation.Loves movies, loves her jobWhen she’s not in front of thecamera, Maria relaxes by watchingmovies.“I love movies,” she saysenthusiastically. “I try to watch asmany as I can in theatres if I canget people to go with me.” If not,she chills at home with the latestreleases on DVD.She works a regular eight-hourday, Monday to Friday, getting upat 4:30 a.m. and finishing at 1:30p.m. “My commitment is a regular40-hour week that just happensto start very early in the day,” shesays. Her energy level and vitalityis remarkable, but she downplays any suchobservation by saying, “I manage to get byon very little sleep. Six hours is an excellentnight’s sleep for me and it feels normal” tohave this kind of lifestyle.“It’s all in how you take it. I spend a lot oftime with my family: mother and father, mybrother, his wife and their three kids. It’s just abalance and you have to plan your time.“I’m lucky to have this job and life. I’mfortunate to have the position I have here andthe job is definitely worth it.”As for the future, Maria says she’s happywhere she is right now “and I’m living thedream. As long as this lasts, I’ll ride the train. Iget to wake up early every morning and workwith people that are like family to me. Peopleare so open and receiving, and I can’t imaginea better job. I feel really blessed. It’s all good.”Can we expect to see her in the Valleysometime soon? She laughs out loud andsays, “I usually take a trip through in thesummertime and visit the Farmers’ Markets. Ihave no immediate plans right now, but youcan count on me coming through to pick upan apple pie, for sure!”

In mid-May it wasannounced that theNew Brunswick government had amended liquorregulations and had officially legalized in-store wineryservices.Despite the fact that for the past 6 years therehave been 20+ businesses offering in-store wineryservices in New Brunswick, the legitimacy of theservice has always been a grey area. This latestannouncement has been anticipated since March2009, when all NB winemaking store owners wereinvited by the government to discuss industry issuesand how best to move forward. A survey of storeowners reveals that this new legislation is beingreceived with open arms by most industry players.Upon review of the new legislation, it has becomeapparent that the NB government has adaptedmany of the same regulations set out by the FederalExcise Act. These happen to be the same regulationsthe NB industry have used as guidelines toself-regulate for the past 6 years. To sum it all up, itsbusiness as usual for operators and consumers alike.Kudos to the NB government for taking theinitiative to recognize the in-store winery serviceindustry as a bona-fide industry with the ability toIn-store Winery Services nowOfficially Legal in New BrunswickThe PersonalDirectives Act—or“Living Will”David BakerNathanson Seaman Watts in Kentville. With the passage of the Personal Directives Act,proclaimed in force April 1st 2010, Nova Scotians nowhave expanded legal ways and means to give effectto their decisions affecting their basic autonomy. The legislation permits us to document our wishesregarding what personal care decisions are made forus in the event that we ever in future lack the capacityto make these decisions for ourselves by appointinga substitute decision maker. She said that it felt so wonderfulto see me again and that it had percolatedback some of the feelings she had for me whenwe were in high school. She said that there wasso much left to say and that she wanted to gettogether again as soon as she was back in town!!I was ecstatic. Confused, but ecstatic. Whatcaused her to leave early that night? Who wasJimmy? What is the Jas connection? When is shecoming back? Have I lost my mind? I dunno, but all I knew is that I was giggling out loud likeI was 16 years old.I needed to get a grip on this whole thingand get some perspective back so, what to do!Bang, it was obvious; I needed to get to The OldOrchard Inn & Spa in the Annapolis Valley! Aweekend there was exactly what I needed………one of those gorgeous rooms, dinner in TheBlomidon dining room and a 60 minute deepmassage is exactly what this old boy needs.Where’s the phone?Well, my weekend is planned so I best getready and head off to work. No time for coffee,I can always drop by the Cider Press Cafe for thatgorgeous smell of their desserts and the kick inthe pants that only caffeine can do for me. Iclimbed into my car, turned the key and “click”.Huh, let’s try that again I said. So I just turn thekey to start the car and “click”. Oh no, pleasenot now, I got things to do today!!!! I dreadedthis day but thank goodness I remembered thefine folks at Gould’s Auto. And there my day shiftedas it was a message from Debbie, what a fabulousvoice indeed. She was going to be back intown and wondered, even if at the last minute,if I’d have some time to spend together thisevening. Are you kidding me???...........I’d putQueen Elizabeth on hold for this!!! Oh boy, ohboy, oh boy, oh boy, this is gonna be GREAT!!We are SO going to the Digby Pines for a veryimpressive dinner at Churchill’s. Geez, I gottaget a new suit! 32 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010TheCommunicationColumnBy Fred SgambatiA simple planI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: marketingis all about the message. It’s a combination of whatyou say and how you say it.It sounds easy, but it depends on forethought, diligence and organization well in advance of publicpresentation. You may have a great product orservice, but it’s practical to determine whom you aretrying to reach and why before you go to market.A reliable way to answer these questions is toformulate a communications plan. It can be informal– a shared conversation with stakeholders and staffto define an approach – or a more formal documentthat organizations or individuals can use to outlinestrategy, audience and key messages.Either way, it’s a considered, consultativeprocess that relies on analysis before the fact andstands eventually as a roadmap to signpost anyand all subsequent communications. In manyways a communications plan tells a story: there’s abeginning, a middle and an end.The only difference is the conclusion. Stories endwhen the book closes, but a communications planhas a greater shelf life and the end is a story in itselfbecause it helps to evaluate your success: Whom didthe message reach? Did it achieve the desired goals?Where do you go from here? The key is as fundamental as the philosophicalaphorism, “know thyself.” Once you have a strategyand a target audience, identify your key messages. They will outline what people should know aboutyou: what you’re doing; why; how; and what’sdifferent about your product/service.Each plan is a blueprint to success and as unique asindividual businesses and the people who own andoperate them. It’s a tool that refines your message, anticipates issues and creates solutions. Simple, butsweet. And that’s what pays off in the end.Want to reach Fred for a personal consultation?E-mail him at sgambatiservices@bellaliant.com or call679-2927.LOOKING FOR AJOB THAT HASLOTS TO OFFER?Then check out OLS!• Competitive Compensation• Impressive Benefits Package• Amazing Rewards Program• Paid Training• Fun, Casual Work Environment• A Career Where You Matter!NOW HIRING - APPLY TODAY!There’s a Reason we’re Still Here!Friendly, Knowledgeable Service and Dedication to our CustomersPRE-INVENTORY SALEDeep Discounts on Discontinued MerchandiseStorewide Sale Ends June 30thWe pride ourselves in findingCanadian Made productsOLS Kentville8 Chipman DriveTel: 902-678-8500Kentville@JoinOLS.comFRITZ’S “Just for You”A practical store for practically everyone!Beside Fritz’s Enviro-Depot 8751 Commercial St. New Minas902-681-4796Nova Scotia Souvenirs • Visit us at: www.nslocal.ca/fritzs

June 2010- Apple Valley Scoop- 33CabinetMaking In The21st CenturyBy Sylvester LakeWhen a lot of us think about the field of cabinetry,we most likely envision an experienced woodworker toiling away for hours in a saw dust coveredworkshop. But, you may be surprised to learn thatin recent times technological advancements havebeen changing the industry. One such innovationis that of the Computer Numerically Controlled(CNC) Router. How Does It Work?Today’s cabinet designer will use the latestcomputer aided design software to develop plansfor cabinet projects. When complete, these plansare sent electronically to a CNC Router withprecision movement instructions for how eachindividual piece of the cabinet will be cut fromsheets of raw material. The cutting of cabinetpieces is totally automated and can be performedwithout human supervision. What Are The Benefits?Using computers to assist in cabinetmanufacturing reduces human error and resultsin finished products which are more consistent inquality and that have a much lower cost. Also, many conventional cabinet builders willcharge significantly higher prices for cabinet sizingthat doesn’t match their catalogue options. Forexample, a cabinet with a width of 20” may costas much as 50% more than a cabinet measuring21” because it is not considered to be a “Standard”size. However, cabinets of virtually any size canbe produced using CNC technology without anyadditional labour costs.Furthermore, before a single cut is made thesoftware will calculate the optimal usage of thematerial based upon the project requirements andthen make the required cuts. This guarantees aconsiderable decrease in product waste. The use of technology allows a modern daycabinet maker to focus on the exterior parts of thecabinet while tools, such as the CNC Router, makethe production of cabinet interiors quicker and lessexpensive. These savings in labour and materialcosts can be passed on to the customer and reducethe overall cost of their cabinet project.Specializing in Eye Wearfor the Entire FamilyCourteous & Professional ServiceAT EYE CARE WE CARE9049 Commercial Street, New Minas NS B4N 5A4Phone: (902) 681-1818 • Fax: (902) 681-1276PO Box 520 Middleton, NS B0S 1P0Housework is somethingyou do that nobodynotices until youdon’t do it!Boundary Surveys • Location Certificates • Subdivision LayoutsConstruction Layouts • G.P.S. 36 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010Do not fear mail from theCanada Revenue AgencyIgnoring a brown envelope from the CanadaRevenue Agency may be tempting but it is not agood strategy.Opening the letter will probablymake life much easier.A former colleague of mine has his own personalstory of why you need to follow up on mail from theCanada Revenue Agency. This senior tax professionalreceived a request from the CRA a couple of yearsago asking for copies of signed T2202A Forms fromhis daughters. They were both in university and mycolleague had claimed tuition transfer credits.Unfortunately, he lost track of the deadline and failedto send the signed forms to the CRA within the 30 dayperiod. The CRA re-assessed his return and excludedthe tuition transfer because he had failed to providethe proper paperwork. He had to pay the outstandingamount and then file an adjustment to claim the tuitiontransfer amount with the forms attached.Though we had a chuckle about his situation –especially since he had not missed any of his clientsubmission deadlines – it is an important lessonabout responding to CRA requests for information. If documents are requested, you need to make sureyou send them in on time. It does not mean you areabout to be audited. It means the CRA wants you toprovide proof that a claim is valid; once you providethe paperwork, the claim is confirmed. These randomchecks are just one way the CRA can verify returns. There are some credits that draw more attention thanothers. We are expecting to see a number of reviewsinvolving the Home Renovation Tax Credit. Movingexpenses and tuition transfers are also more likely to bechecked. Again, as long as you have your receipts, youshould be able to satisfy the CRA request. If you do miss a deadline like my former colleaguedid, it will be noted in your compliance history. Yourcompliance history can also play a role in whether ornot your return is reviewed. If you have a history of notbeing able to substantiate your claims or not respondingto requests to do so, it is more likely your return will bereviewed. There is no way to guarantee that your return will notbe reviewed or re-assessed. Self-employed individualsare more likely to be reviewed, so it is important tokeep good receipts and records to make the processeasier if it does happen. Business expenses need to bereasonable and you need to have some expectation ofrevenue. Your business cannot be just a hobby and youcannot claim losses indefinitely. If the CRA does disallowsome of your business expenses, you will receive a taxbill for the adjusted amount, as well as accrued interestfrom May 1.So open every letter you receive from the CRA,whether you want to read it or not. Dealing with arequest for documentation right away will mean fewerheadaches later. And if you have been honest andforthright when preparing your tax return, you havenothing to fear from a CRA request.A tax professional at H&R Block can talk aboutother credits and deductions that may affect you.To find the office nearest you visit www.hrblock.caor call us atThis article provides only an overview of the regulations in forceat the date of publication, and no action should be taken withoutconsulting the detailed legislation or seeking professional advice. Therefore no responsibility for loss occasioned by any person actingor refraining from action as a result of the material contained in thisbulletin can be accepted by H&R Block Canada, Inc.8748 Commercial St,New Minas • 681-2201Our Congratulationsto R.D Chisholm Ltd.and the family on their85th AnniversaryR. MeadowbrookMeat Market- A HistoryMeadowbrook Meat Market is a first generationfarm owned and operated by Jim and Margie Lamb.Over the years the farm has grown and diversifiedin order to keep up with the ever changing marketplace. In the beginning (1988), we sold only sides ofpork on a Saturday morning. With the supportof an employee of ours Wayne Zwicker, webegan making hams and bacons. We made only“Lunenburg” sausage which Margie had learned tomake from her uncle Cecil Silver. Over time wegained faithful customers and outgrew our littleshop – to expand we renovated the garage wherewe worked until 2007 when we had once againoutgrown our space.During the 90’s we purchased our first BBQ tostart doing whole pork roasts. BBQ’s have becomeanother great way to market our pork. Jim alsodoes an amazing hip of beef. Our BBQ’s are very“We carry manyvarieties of fresh andsmoked sausagesALLGLUTENFREE!”popular for fundraisers, reunions, and weddings. We now have 3 BBQ’s and are often fully booked! We have donated backyard parties for fundraisers –we have fun saying our most expensive BBQ wentfor 1.6 million … Casino Bucks! It is planting season now so there are shortnights and long days as Jim continues to sell andplant Pioneer Hi Bred corn, soya beans and winterwheat. All of which we use in making feed for ourhogs. We have had many new changes to our farm inJune 2010- Apple Valley Scoop- 37MeadowbrookMeat Market“Home of JimmieLamb Ham”$1 00Redeem thiscoupon for OFF$1.00 off yournext porkpurchase!902-538-1106www.meadowbrookmeatmarket.comthe past few years – in 2010 we moved our sows toour farm in Somerset, we housed them at a friend’sfarm since we lost our barn in 2008, while we builta replacement. I can offer you anoption that will help you get on top of your debtload. Why would consolidating your debts make adifference? It’s simply: you could be saving hundreds ofdollars every month. Right now we’re in a periodof historically low interest rates, but credit providersdon’t always pass on the savings to you. In fact, the most popular big chain store credit cardscharge rates as high as 25% and major consumercredit cards charge as much as 19%. Carrying abalance on these credit cards can be hard on yourcash flow. Consolidation provides you with a single, manageable monthly payment, with a single interestrate and countless dollars in interest savings. So what are your options? You might want to consider paying off all of yourexisting loans by establishing a single bank accountwith a line of credit that will reduce your exposure toinflated interest rates.Let’s walk through an example.Let’s assume that you have a car loan at 6.5%,your mortgage is up for renewal at 4.7%, yourpersonal line of credit is 12%, and you have a Visa orMasterCard balance at 17%. When you add them allup, let’s say you’re paying $2500. per month, someof which is principal and some of which is interest. Now imagine that you move all of those loans intoa single vehicle that is only charging an interest rateof 3.2%. If you continue to pay off your debts bypaying back the same amount of principal, yourinterest exposure could be reduced by hundreds ofdollars a month. It’s life finding cash you didn’t know you had.And who wouldn’t like that? Now the question is- what would you do with that money? Maybe youwant to pay down your mortgage sooner, or maybethere are some investments, savings or insuranceopportunities that will help you reach your financialgoals faster.Let’s talk about how cast management canimprove your financial outlook. As your Sun Life Financial advisor, I can help you tounderstand how debt consolidation is one of the firststeps in building a strong financial strategy. Give mea call today, and let’s see if we can find a strategy tohelp you pay down your debt sooner.Danny Hilchie, BBA, CFP, CLU, CH.F.C., EPCAdvisorChartered Financial ConsultantMember, Advocis7165 Highway 1Cambrooken Court, Suite 201Coldbrook, NS B4R 1A2Tel: 902-679-2886Fax: 902-679-1382danny.hilchie@sunlife.comwww.sunlife.caRobert D. 40 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010Core MusclesAmy Lewsaw PTJulie SkalingPhysiotherapy ClinicHave you ever had back pain, a baby, urinaryincontinence, or just wanted to be a little more inshape? Then, continue reading, as this article couldhelp you make that difference you are looking for. What’s going to make that difference? Well, wehave to dig down deep inside ourselves, and findthe strength….core strength, that is. The coremusculature is hard to feel, impossible to see, anddoes not create a lot of movement, but with practiceof proper exercises, you can become aware of thesestabilizers, and notice the difference they can makeon everyday life. Some of the main muscles of the “core” includetransverse abdominis, lumbar multifidi, diaphragm, and pelvic floor. These muscle groups encircleyour spine, thus strengthening of the core musclesimproves lumbar spine support. Increased strengthalso improves lower abdominal support, and witha strong core, we can create a solid foundationthrough which power generated in one area of thebody is transferred to another. When our core isworking efficiently, our body and its muscular systemcan work more efficiently. You are now probably wondering if these musclesare so hard to feel, and you can not see them, andthey do not create movement, how are you evergoing to be able to strengthen them?! Well, it canbe done with proper teaching, and one great placeto receive that teaching is your local physiotherapist.Your physiotherapist can teach you the basics ofhow to activate these muscles. Once you and yourbody become more aware of how to engage thesemuscles, you can start to incorporate the simpleactivation into other more challenging exercises, andeven into day to day activities. For example, if youwere going to lift a heavy object, you could “turnon” your core muscles, which will help to stabilizeyour low back, and then do the lift, decreasingyour chance of injury. A strong core can lead toimprovement of everyday life, injury prevention, anda decrease in chronic low back pain.Remember, your core muscles are one of themain components to helping the rest of yourmusculoskeletal system move efficiently. Your bodywill be forever grateful, if you take the time to makeand keep the core muscles strong.Beat the skyrocketing price ofgas by using your feetTake a look at our wideselection of walking shoes byCambrian, Etonic, Canfieldand DrewYour Sole Provider70 Exhibition St., Kentville, NS 902-678-0020email: soleprovider@eastlink.ca • website: www.soleproviders.comJulie Skaling PhysiotherapyClinc70 Exhibition St., Kentville 678-3422JULIE SKALINGrofessionals include: Physiotherapists,Massage Therapist, OccupationalTherapist, Psychologists, Dietician,PKinesiologist, Rehabilitation Assistant.A list of services offered at our clinic includes:• Workplace injuries• Post MVA• Sports injuries• Manual therapy• Vestibular rehabilitation(BPPV)• Personalized exerciseprogramHours of Operation8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday to FridayKingston N.S.902-765-8313Email: brownsauto@ns.aliantzinc.caWe carry a complete line of Quality Used AutoParts with a 30 Day Replacement WarrantyPurchase Vehicles for Partsand Vehicles for scrapPurchasing• Catalytic Converters for scrap• Radiators - Cleaned or Uncleaned• Old Starters and Alternators• Aluminum Wheels• Lead Wheel Weights• BatteriesAll Purchases are by WeightCall 902-765-8313 or Fax: 902-765-3275• Functional capacitiesevaluation (FCE)• Post offer employment testing• Job site evaluation• Craniosacral therapy• Acupuncture• Orthotics• Manual Lymphatic Drainage(MLD)WE AREYOURLOCALDROP OFFFOR MAJORHOUSEHOLDAPPLIANCESWe are theLocalAuthorizeddrop off agentFORRETIRE YOURRIDE VEHICLES

Discover what you’vebeen missing!Fundy Hearing SolutionsTypes of Hearing LossesSensorineural - Sensorineural hearing loss resultsfrom damage to the inner part of the ear or thenerve that carries information from the ear to thebrain. People will this type of hearing loss usuallyexperience distortion of the sound they hear. Itaffects the speech understanding, or ability to hearclearly. Quiet sounds may not be heard, while loudersounds may become unbearably louder. With thistype of hearing loss, simply increasing the volumeof sounds will not be beneficial. Hearing aids usuallybenefit people will this type of hearing loss, as theycan be programmed for the specific characteristicsof the hearing problem. Sensorineural hearing lossaccounts for about 90% of all hearing loss.Age-Related - As we get older, the inner earbegins to lose its sensitivity. This is a very gradualprocess , but does not usually become noticeableuntil approximately age 50. The symptoms of thehearing loss are different for everyone. Due to thegradual progression, this loss may not be noticeableto the person experiencing it. High frequencysounds are affected more than lower frequencysounds. The television volume may be set higherthan others prefer. With this type of hearing loss, individuals can hear well in certain situations, butmay experience difficulty when background noiseis introduced. For this type of hearing loss, hearingaids are most beneficial as they can help reducethe volume of unwanted background noise whileboosting the volume of certain frequencies that arenot being heard.Noise-Induced - Noise exposure at our work oreven during recreation activities can permanentlydamage the inner part of the ear. This type of hearingloss can easily be prevented with the use of hearingprotection, however once damage has occurred ahearing aid is the only treatment available.Conductive - The second most common form ofhearing loss is conductive. Some medical conditionscan alter the ear canal, the eardrum, or the bones ofthe inner ear. This can prevent sound from travellingfrom the outer or middle ear to the inner ear. This typeof loss can often be medically or surgically corrected.Conductive hearing loss usually involues a reductionin sound level. An alternative to surgical proceduresis hearing aids. With this loss, amplification of soundis needed. Conductive hearing loss may occur at anyage, and can happen suddenly or gradually.Mixed - This hearing loss combines aspects ofboth sensorineural and conductive types of hearingloss. Both surgery and hearing aids are typicallybeneficial to treat this type of loss.Darlene Sawler B.Sc., BC-HISFundy Hearing Solutions10 Webster St., Town Square, Kentville (902)679-1211Fundy Hearing SolutionsHearing AidDehumidifierSpecial$9 9910 Webster St. Suite 110, KentvillePh: 679-1211 • 1-888-627-0444June 2010- Apple Valley Scoop- 41ON or OFF the road......we have you covered!KawasakiWhy is it harder to loseweight as you get older?Because by that timeyour body and your fathave become really goodfriends.Travel TrailersUltra Light WeightsLight Weights5th WheelPark ModelsParts & AccessoriesServiceUsed ModelsMotorcycle ATV Mule Offroad TeryxPark Street RV7006 Hwy 1 Coldbrook, NS B4R 1B6(902) 678-8678

What EVERYHome/BusinessNEEDS.Shawn ButlerWhat a simple smoke detectorcan do for you:Every year thousands of lives are lost due to firesin the home and workplace. In the United States orin Canada, the results are pretty much the same. Ina fire, smoke and deadly gases tend to spread fasterand farther than heat. That’s one reason why mostfire victims die from inhalation of smoke and toxicgases, not as a result of burns. A majority of fatal fireshappen when families are asleep because occupantsare unaware of the fire until there is not adequatetime to escape. One thing that I found shockingwas to find out that we cannot smell smoke whilewe are sleeping. Most smoke detectors are on guard 24 hours aday. You can have 2 types; either battery operatedones or wired directly to a power source in yourhome. We must maintain the batteries are changedevery 9-12 months. When the smoke detector startsbeeping they can upset people and cause them toremove the batteries without replacing them rightaway. A smoke detector is designed to make a loudshrilling sound when there is smoke or high heat. When a fire is first detected, you need a smokedetector that works and to be able to hear it. It isdesigned to allow a family the precious, but limitedtime it takes to escape. So it’s very important towake up if you hear the alarm. Why should I have MonitoredSmoke Detector?24 hours a day 365 days a year, your monitoredsmoke detector is ready for you. A monitoredsmoke detector is much louder with a siren andless sensitive than a normal smoke detector. Whena monitored smoke/heat detector detects a fire itwill sound the alarm. Your alarm system seizes the• 24 Hour Monitoring• Security• CCTV• Business & Residentialphone line sends an electronic signal through yourphone line to the monitoring station. 52 - Apple Valley Scoop - June 2010Eye SafetyTipsMichelle MayTechnician/OwnerA note for those who read last month’s SpringCleaning article – I DID IT! I threw away all that oldmake-up, facial cleansers and ‘Halloween’ products tostart fresh. It was difficult at times and there was a lotof it but it feels good to know I am only using newproducts on my skin and eyes. Starting fresh has beenquite liberating.A few tips for protecting your eyes and your newproducts:W Make sure you use a sharpened eye linerpencil so that the wood casing cannot scratch youreyelid or the eye itself. Don’t use stiff and dry pencilsthat require more pressure for the same reasons. This prevents any abrasions and the potential forinfections.W It is generally suggested that you replaceyour products every six (6) months however, someproducts may require more frequent changes if youhave chosen to use products without preservativesor antifungal content. You really should read thepackaging before throwing it out so you know what isrecommended by the manufacturer.W Write the date you start using it on theproduct. If it is too small a package make a separatelist and tape it to the inside of your medicine cabinetor the door under the sink. Maybe you are a colourcoder, use coloured stickers that you put on yourproducts to represent when you opened them. If itstarts to look like party sprinkles in your make-up bagyou may need a new system and to start fresh.W Use disposable applicators as often aspossible. Try to avoid double dipping.W Always use a brush cleaner to keep yourbrushes clean prior to putting them in the products. You may need different brush cleaners for syntheticversus natural bristle brushes.W Do not pump your mascara brush in thetube it allows more air in and can dry it out morequickly. Try the twist method as you are pulling thewand out of the tube.W Check the environment of where you arestoring your products. The hot steam after everyshower changes the environment daily. Also, if youleave your cosmetics on the bathroom counter isthere a window where natural sunlight can shine forperiods of time on your products? This can makethem really warm and if there are bacteria present itlikes it warm in order to grow. Also, UV rays can havean effect on product ingredients as well. I would alsolike to mention that environment can also affect yourmedications so it is also important to think about howthose are being stored.W Transporting your products. This is a bigone because we all take it with us wherever we go.Try to take a small amount so that you don’t have toleave it in the car on those hot sunny days. Not onlyheat but cold can affect your product ingredients aswell. Extreme temperatures can also cause someproduct ingredients to separate. Again, UV rays affectingredients.W Odour usually accompanies bacteria, soif you notice your sponge applicators smelling “notquite right” you should replace them. A changein product smell could also mean the ‘fragrance’additives have expired.W Sharing products: We tend to be morediligent to make sure the testers we look at in storesdo not contact our eyes and we closely watch themake-up artists wash brushes off or use disposables. How about siblings and friends? We need to havea closed door policy on our products. Everyone hasdifferent skin bacteria and it could cause irritation oreven infection in another person.Ultimately it is all about looking your best andhaving fun with the products that are available. Ourconsumer responsibility is to be aware of how to usethe products safely.Let me know what other tips you know about eyesafety and I will share them in a future article.Wink Eye GlamourYou Don’t Have To Be Born With Them.Book Your Appointment today!678-2829 / 680-1699Have questions or comments:email winkeyeglamour@gmail.comWinkEye GlamourSpecializing in Eyelash ExtensionsYou don’t have to be born with them.See results instantly!Eyelash extensions are likewearing a power suit, they demandattention in the boardroomand at the beachCome in for a relaxing experienceand leave with unstoppable lashes.Wink Eye GlamourBook your appointment today!678-2829 / 680-1699I brought theblazer braid I bought tobind the blazer blue. We love toprowl in the library. The best thing to do is to wrestle down our favouritebooks on the computer and place them on hold. We can’t wait for thebooks to get here; it’s like waiting to open your Christmas presents! It is special to read about something in a book that you don’t knowanything about. Then you go home and tell your parents what you havelearned, and then they ask you in a surprised tone, “How did you knowthat?” You answer like a professional trapper, “It’s all in the skills I’velearned. It was hard but I made it out alive!” You think to yourself, “I’vebeen to the library.”Sometimes in the library you feel like you are in the jungle huntingdown your favourite book. If you are quick enough you can catch acomic book, an I Spy book, an adventure book or whatever you like.Like us, there are a lot of people who go to the library to search forgood books. But let’s not forget the most important people at the library, the librarians or the jungle wardens. The librarians help you forage forbooks when you are having trouble tracking them down. They knowwhere the book is most likely to be lurking. The librarians spend theirspare time nursing the books back to health so they can return themto their natural habitat. After you choose a book to take home they tagyour prey and you return it in a few weeks. The library is a fun and mysterious place. Good luck adventurers! Justremember all books have their own story to tell.By: Bryn (10) and Aidyn (8) Scott
