Research ActivityDr. Miani’s research, whose main contributions have been collected in thecoauthored book [B1], has dealt with1. dynamical systems with state and input constrains and suboptima controllaws [J1, J3, J5, J7, C7, J9, BC2, C8, C9, J10, J12, J14, J16, C24];2. analysis and controller synthesis for uncertain systems via Lyapunov techniques[C1, C2, J2, BC1, C3, J4, C5, J6, C14];3. l 1 disturbance rejection synthesis [C4, J8, C6];4. dynamical networks optimization [C10, C11, J11, C22, J13, J17];5. gain scheduling and switching systems control laws [C19, J15, C26, C27,W2, C31, J24];6. industrial applications control laws synthesis [C12, C17, C20, J18, C28,C32, J23];7. H ∞ performance PID synthesis [C23, J19, J20, C25, C30];8. modeling and control of flexible systems [C13, C15].9. autonomous robot navigation [P1]Main contributionThe above research research results led to the main contribution [J24]. Insuch paper the authors give a complete answer on the relevant problem (actuallyleft as an open problem by Prof. Morse at Yale University) of designingswitching control laws for switching systems. In simpler words, the contributionimportance can be given by means of an example.Assume the designers have designed the airplane’s flaps position regulatorsaccording to the availability of different sensor measurements (sensors are normallyredundant to cope with failures): regulator 1 works when the first twosensor measurements are available, regulator 2 when the second two sensor measurementsare available and so on. Everything is designed to work fine wheneither of the couple of sensor measurements is working and a supervisor (typicallya computer) chooses the right one. If the supervisor senses that somethingis going wrong with the current active measurements, it switches the active regulatorto the other one (it basically changes its configuration to adapt it to thenew setting). Now, if after a while the measurements used for the previousconfiguration turn back to normal working conditions, the supervisor switchesback to the previous configuration. In such conditions, up to now, there was no guarantee that such switchingbehaviour would result in an error-free (i.e., accident-free) system. Thecontribution is exactly that of providing a way to systematically guaranteethat the correct functioning of the system under switching ispreserved.3

Other research activitiesDr. Miani has been serving as a reviewer for many international Journals,in 1998 and 2001 he has been member of the organizing committee ofthe international conference “Advanced Manufacturing and System Technology. From 2000 to 2002 he was member of the Editorial Board of the“Nonlinear Dynamics and Systems Theory” Journal.
