The tenor sings the highest note in a chord, the bass sings the lowest, the lead sings the melody, and the baritone sings the allimportantmissing note to complete the chord. To choose which part you will sing, use the following descriptions and ranges:Tenor range: F above middle C to Gabove the staffThe highest voice part is a harmony partabove the melody. Tenors must sing lightlyand clearly, without covering the melodysung by the lead part. Tenors sing mostlyin their head voice and in their upper register. The coloratura, dramatic or mezzosoprano must be able to lighten the voicequality and control excessive vibrato inorder to tune the a cappella chords immediately.Baritone range: B below middle C toC an octave aboveThe baritone is the other middle voice partand has essentially the same range as thelead part. Baritone is a harmony part whichmust sing both above and below the leadnotes, depending on where the melody issituated. Therefore, baritones must be ableto sing lighter than the lead in their upperrange and stronger when their notes arebelow those of the lead. This rich, fullersound in the lower range helps solidify therelationship between lead and bass. Baritonesare flexible and must be very accurate. The baritone part is written in the bassclef, an octave lower than it is meant to besung.Lead range: Middle C to D or E anoctave aboveThe melody is carried in the Lead part. This voice part is typically best suited tostrong first altos and second sopranos.Because she carries the melody the leadmust sing with authority, clarity and with aconsistent quality throughout her range. The lead sings with color and warmth andis responsible for conveying the interpretation, emotion and inflections of the song.Bass range: F below middle C to Gabove middle CIn barbershop music the bass is the strongharmony part at the bottom of the chord. The bass must sing with as much authorityas the lead and provide a firm foundationfor the cone-shaped sound. Usually shesings the root or the fifth of the chord.Ideally the bass and lead work as a team, establishing a strong and accurate relationship. The bass part is written in the bass clef, anoctave lower than it is meant to be sung.
