2middledistanceMiddle final: the biggesttechnical challengeAfter two qualification days in Bière-Ballens and St-George the full excitementof running for medals is on again.Today the WOC-athletes compete inthe middle distance final, fighting forgold and honor in the most technicaldiscipline. The courses are 6.5 kilometerslong (240 meters climbing)for the men and 5.5 kilometers (<strong>17</strong>0meters) for the women thus leading towinning times of about 35 minutes. This is a length where the athletescan push all the way into the finish– while they have to navigate as safeas possible in difficult terrain. Themiddle distance represents the mainchallenge of orienteering, namely ofnot crossing the edge of running toofast in order to still be able to readthe map carefully enough. As often in the past world championships, the middle distance final isheld in the technically most demandingterrain. Although the area north ofthe Col de la Givrine has never beenmapped before this year’s world championships, there are some things thatcan be told about the terrain of themiddle distance final. Like the middlequalification, the organizers describeit as a typical Jura terrain. One ofthe main characteristics is the stonyunderground with cliffs and rocks inmany places. There will be even someareas with dead wood on the groundwhich represents some extra obstaclesfor the runners. The relief featuresin the final will be vaguer thanWOC: that’s on today+ 12.00-16.00: middle distance final inSt-Cergue / Col de la Givrine+ Live Results of today’s final races:www.woc2012.ch+ 16.00: orienteering for beginners andvideos from today’s finals on the Place dela Navigation in Lausanne+ 19.30: performance by Association CapoeiraLausannein yesterday’s qualification with somerelatively flat parts which implies thatthe compass should be an importanthelp for the middle finalists.A specialty of today’s terrain comparedto the other forest competitionsin this championships are the meadowsand semi-open areas the runnerswill face in the final. Although therewill probably not be much running inthose areas this gives an additionalelement to the competition. Changesin speed could be crucial especiallywhen re-entering the forest.

3middledistance«I’ve never felt as relaxed»Thierry Gueorgiou on his way during yesterday’s middle distance qualification. The Frenchman won his heat easily. To win your heat with a leadof 53 seconds in the middledistance although you still arefighting with the consequencesof a serious injury: that isthe proof of real strength. Inthe qualification race yesterdayThierry Gueorgiou showedhis class despite the problemshe still has due to his stressfracture. He sustained the injury shortlybefore the European championshipsthis year and has beenstruggling since then. «Forthree days everything has beenfine», he told the journalists.«The injury disturbed me in thepreparation for the championships»,he said after his race.Only one month ago he couldhardly imagine starting at theWOC at all. «This is why I am sohappy right now», he said.He estimated that he is not inas good shape as are his mainopponents. «But the middledistance is my favorite distanceand I want to sell myselfas dearly as possible. Forme the middle is the easiestdiscipline because it is shortund you don’t need very highspeed like in sprint or thatmuch endurance like in longdistance races.»Asked how many percent ofhis potential he currentlyis able to perform he didn’twant to estimate. «That is simplyimpossible.»However, he says that he hasnever felt relaxed like duringthese world championships,«because I didn’t expectto start. But of course, now Iwant to do my best and win».The reigning middle distancechampion also made a statementconcerning a possibleparticipation in the relay comingSaturday. «We will decidethat after the middle distancefinal. Sa participationau relais, où il avaitremporté l’or l’année passée,sera décidée aujourd’hui. lbWOC-CompassWorld classGueorgiouI can imagine how ThierryGueorgiou feels. I hadstress fractures severaltimes and had to participatein competitions withlittle preparation. Yet,Thierry Gueorgiou is an extremelyexperienced athletewith extraordinary technicalskills. And these skillsdon’t get lost although youhave to pause like he hadto do. The physical abilitiescan be quite well maintainedduring such periodswith comprehensive alternativetraining, and accordingto his statements ThierryGueorgiou did that. Personally,I think that the lossof physical competitivenessis often overestimated– provided the alternativetraining is done properly. However, there is also amental aspect that has to betaken into consideration inthis context. A period withoutcompetition or trainingoften causes a lack of assuranceand self-confidence.In my opinion this is thebiggest problem because inorienteering self-confidenceis one of the most decisivefactors involved.Great athletes like Thierryonly need a short trainingperiod in order to regainthis good competitionfeeling. Other runners needmore time. That’s what distinguishesa first-classorienteer from the average.Marie-Luce Romanens was the firstSwiss female orienteer to win theWOC short distance. For Daily OMagazine she daily comments oncurrent events at the WOC 2012.

7Middle distance qualification:out of the comfort zone!middledistanceTricky! The qualifier of yersterday’smiddle distance qualification was ineverybody’s mouth. Simone Niggli wasjust one of the many favourites whogot utterly challenged by the roughJura terrain of Bois rond, near St-Georges. «I did two relatively big mistakesand had to step on the gas afterwards»,Niggli explained, surprisedto have still won women’s C heat with37 seconds over French athlete AmélieChataing. Swedish raising star ToveAlexandersson stole the spot lights toNiggli on the Marchairuz, winning overMinna Kauppi (Finland) in heat B witha gap of over 1 minute 40. «I had agood race with some small mistakes. It feels really good and I am lookingforward to the final!», the 19-years-old- who just took a further Junior WorldChampion title on the middle distancelast week in Slovakia – explained afterher race. Russian Tatyana Riabkinatook the lead in heat A, proving oncemore her excellent form after her victoryin the long distance qualification. In the absence of reigning world championHelena Jansson, injured, today’sfinal might well become a tight fightbetween Niggli, Alexandersson, Riabkina,Kauppi and Chataing. In the men’s race, all eyes were turnedtowards Thierry Gueorgiou, «king ofmiddle distance», whose participationhad remained highly uncertain due toa recent stress fracture. The Frenchman, who said he was «very, veryhappy» to stand on the start line, hadall reasons to be just as happy on thefinish line, winning with almost oneminute gap over Norwegian star OlavLundanes.Gernot Kerschbaumer completed Austria’sgreat day by winning heat B, followedby Valentin Novikov (Russia). One of Gueorgiou’s biggest opponenttoday might well be Carl Waaler Kaas(Norway), victorious of heat C in frontof a further favourite, Swiss FabianHertner.

Running around or going straight?Route choice analysismenOn the men’s courses, there were twointeresting route choice legs early in thecourse. The first one to control three waspart of both the men’s B and C heat. Forthe second one, from control four to controlfive in the heat C, the fastest routechoice was a bit of a surprise.2-3 heat B, CThere are mainly two possible routechoices on this leg but with differentmini sub-route choices. The first questionis whether to run up to the road ordown to the path right after the control. The Frenchman François Gonon and theLatvian Edgars Bertuks (third in heat C)both choose the option to run up to theroad. But after the bend of the road, theyrun slightly differently. Gonon stays relativelylow. He avoids thereby the steepestpart of the slope but has to climb againtowards the control. Bertuks on the otherhand runs higher up in the slope. He justhas to follow the contour into the control. In the finish he wasn’t really happyabout the choice: «The runability in theslope was poor, it was just too steep», hesaid. Still, the split times show no big difference. Both Fabian Hertner from Switzerland(second in heat C) and the winner of heatB, the Austrian Gernot Kerschbaumer ranthe other possible route down to the pathwith only a small difference in the beginningof their routes. Hertner wasn’t sureabout his choice after the race and said«probably it would have been better tocut even more through the forest beforereaching the path.» Comparing the splittimes, it is only Kerschbaumer who losessignificantly. This is probably explainedby running speed because the Austrian’sway out of the control looks fast.8middledistance4-5 Hertner vs. BertuksThe shortest leg to control number fiveleads through a quite long passage ofgreen. Bertuks chooses to the left andaround the thickets on the forest road.Another advantage is the clear attackpointoffered by the big crossing of theroads. Either way, Bertuks makes a smallmistake in the control circle, climbing abit too high. He is still a lot faster thanHertner who cuts through the green. TheSwiss said in the finish that he didn’thave full control over where he was runningafter he left the road. A loss of 24seconds is probably still too much – thefast way around by Bertuks was the betterchoice. Similar to the women, GernotKerschbaumer described the terrain asreally tough. «The main question aboutthe route choices was if it was worth it torun around», said the heat winner. In thiscase it clearly was.lm

9Running around: a successful tacticRoute choice analysiswomenThe middle distance qualification nearSt George on the map Bois Rond was theexpected tough challenge for the WOCparticipants.Especially in the women’sclass, there were only very few who finishedwithout mistakes. The terrain wastricky with low visibility in many areas.Signe Klingting, the Danish runner whofinished third in the women’s A heat, saidafter the race: «It was really difficult technicallyas one couldn’t see far. Physicallyyou had to fight all the way because ofthe stony ground, dead wood and thickets.»Although the runners faced some bigchallenges they all liked the race. «Thiswas really fun orienteering and a goodterrain for a middle distance», was LinaStrand’s comment. The Swede was placedjust ahead of Klingting. The key for a goodresult in today’s race in the women’s Aheat was a safe and clean run. Even if themiddledistanceroute choices played only a minor role, there were some interesting and varyingroute choices on some legs.8-9Riabkina, Strand and Klinting all runstraight. This seems to be a fast choiceeven more so because the runability inthe forest was really good and for oncethere were no stones on the ground whichslowed the runners down at this place.Interestingly the best split time is runby Judith Wyder (2:33). The Swiss madesome big mistakes earlyon and decided to runthe right route choice optionalong the path andthe forest road. She says:«After the mistakes I gotunsecure so I looked forthe safest possible routechoices.» All of the othertop 3 runners (Riabkina2:54, Strand 2:58, Klinting3:06) loose quite a lotof time on this relativelyshort leg – this indicatesthat Wyder’s route choiceis simply better. Strandsaid that she saw theother route choice butthought that the whiteon the map looked goodto go straight. «But Inearly came down to theyellow near the road anyway»,she adds.11-12Again, Wyder chooses torun around. She uses thesmall path to get out ofthe control, then dropsto the forest road andagain uses the path toget a really safe attackpoint. She commentsthis route: «It was probablytoo extreme, it musthave been faster to runstraight.» Riabkina (1:44),Strand (1:44) and Klinting(1:43) run straighterand all of them are faster. The difference to Wyder(2:01) is relatively small.Considering her situationafter mistakes in thebeginning and a shakedself-confidence, this reallysafe route choice wasdefinitively no mistake.Either way, it was «only»about qualifying to thefinal.jm

13Tip of the daySara Norrgrann, Finland (Picture )I am from Finland so of course, Ihope that Minna Kauppi will win thewomen’s race. In the men’s race Idon’t really know. Maybe Gueorgiou. Ihope he is in good shape again.is a strong runner and of course alsovery good in orienteering. Kyburz isyoung and motivated. And then themiddle distance is one of his favoritedisciplines.Airi Alnek, Estonia ()I think Simone Niggli will win. Shewins so often so why shouldn’t shetomorrow? In the men’s race it ishard to say. I like Thierry Gueorgiou, but he is not in a very goodshape at the moment. Maybe aSwiss can win.Janne Salmi, FinnlandIn the men’s race I think it willbe one of the Swiss guys. Ithink Marc Lauenstein will win, although Olav Lundanes is alsoa favorite. But I think it is timefor Marc to win. In the women’srace I think Minna Kauppi willbeat Simone Niggli with a leadof one second.ABC de la CODisciplinelongrelayQuatre disciplines font l’objet dechampionnats internationaux. 15First timers from across the oceansPui Fung Chan (Hong-Kong)WOC 2012 are the first World Championshipsfor 26-years-old Pui FungChan (English name: Leona) fromHong-Kong, who started orienteeringwith 14 and participated already twicein JWOC. «The vegetation is muchdenser in Hong-Kong and we have onlyfew route choices. Here I enjoy orienteeringmuch more». There are a fewhundreds orienteers in her home country, among which about 15 elite women.«We have to qualify through rankingevents, a 5 km test and a hill test».«I was very lucky to get the chance tocome here», Leona adds.Francesco Buselli (Argentina)Francesco Buselli is the very first Argentinianto participate in World OrienteeringChampionships. He startedorienteering 15 years ago in Italy, where he is still living now – he holdsthe Italian nationality too. «Orienteeringappeared in Argentina in 1978,but stopped under the military dictatorship,as we were not allowed tomap anything». About 200 people arenowadays orienteering in Argentina, allin the surroundings of Buenos Aires, which is characterized by very flat terrains.«It is developing relatively fast»,Francesco – who ran both sprint andmiddle distance - says.Michael Crone (South-Africa)Despite not having had his best racetoday, Michael Crone still had goodreasons to smile: two days ago, themedicine student became the firstSouth-African to qualify for a WOC final, the sprint one. He already participatedin the previous WOC and JWOCin Denmark, and fully focused on thesprint this year. «I didn’t really preparethe middle distance», Michael explainsin the finish area, his map still in hishand. «In South Africa, the closest forestfrom my home is 2.5 hours away.We only go there two or three timesa year». Michael – as all membersfrom the South African national team– comes from Johannesburg, while allforest are located near Cap Town. «Thebetter orienteers all come from theplace located the furthest away fromforests... it’s a bit weird!» he laughs.South Africa travelled with an entiremen team at WOC 2012, but withoutany woman. «There are quite a fewjuniors, but senior women are not yetthere». About 80 orienteers show upat events. «We are trying to grow, andthere is now a school program. But theproblem is to bring the children fromschools to club events». lb
