Summary<br />
The third edition of the <strong>European</strong> regional studbook <strong>for</strong> the common hippopotamus<br />
(<strong>Hippopotamus</strong> amphibius) includes data <strong>for</strong> 1316 specimens historically kept in <strong>European</strong> zoos<br />
and other institutions between the years 1850 and 2008. The current population (to 31. 12. 2008)<br />
consists of 198 specimens kept in 73 institutions; however, 15 of these individuals are kept in 9<br />
non-responding institutions.<br />
During 2008, 13 births occurred, 5 of these died within the same year. A further 8 animals<br />
died during the year. Thus, the death rate was the same as the rate of young reared in 2008. In total,<br />
3 animals were transferred, one of them out of the ESB population. A new holder of common<br />
hippopotamus is Abony <strong>Zoo</strong> (Hungary), however this zoo is not EAZA member and it does not<br />
respond to the studbook keeper. No zoos stopped holding the species in 2008.<br />
The population appears to be stable. Nevertheless, if new holders are not added in the<br />
coming years, the population will decrease. The current population is based on at least 38 founders.<br />
Un<strong>for</strong>tunately, the origin of many specimens is still unknown.<br />
This edition involves demographic data and inbreeding coefficients and mean kinship of all<br />
living individuals. It also contains a list of 8 references involving common hippopotamus published<br />
in the year 2008.<br />
Souhrn<br />
Třetí vydání evropské plemenné knihy hrochů obojživelných (<strong>Hippopotamus</strong> amphibius)<br />
obsahuje údaje o 1316 jedincích držených v evropských institucích v letech 1850 - 2008. Současná<br />
populace (k 31. 12. 2008) čítá 198 hrochů držených v 73 institucích. Nicméně 15 jedinců se nachází<br />
v 9 institucích, které dosud nespolupracují nebo neodpověděly v posledním roce.<br />
V roce 2008 se narodilo 13 mláďat, z nichž 5 téhož roku uhynulo. Mimoto uhynulo dalších 8<br />
dospělých hrochů. Na rozdíl od dvou uplynulých let v roce 2008 počet odchovů vyrovnal počet<br />
úhynů. Celkem byla přesunuta 3 zvířata, přičemž jedno zvíře opustilo ESB populaci. Novým<br />
chovatelem v rámci Evropské unie se stala zoologická zahrada v Abony v Maďarsku. Bohužel tato<br />
zoo nekomunikuje s držitelem plemenné knihy. V roce 2008 neukončila chov hrochů obojživelných<br />
žádná evropská instituce.<br />
Evropská populace se zdá být stabilní. Nicméně, pokud se v nejbližších letech neobjeví noví<br />
chovatelé, tak populace může začít klesat. Současná populace je založena na alespoň 38 zvířatech.<br />
Původ řady jedinců však bohužel dosud není znám, takže toto číslo nemusí být konečné.<br />
Obdobně jako druhé vydání, i třetí vydání plemenné knihy přináší aktulizované základní<br />
demografické údaje, jakož i údaje o inbredním koeficientu a podílu zakladatelů v žijící populaci<br />
(mean kinship). Zároveň je přiložen seznam 8 původních vědeckých článků, které se hrochů<br />
obojživelných týkají a jenž byly publikovány v roce 2008.<br />
