Introduction The third edition of the European studbook for common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) involves updated records of the living population as well as improved records of the overall population. This improvement is based on three sources. First, during 2008 I received a letter from an enthusiast Carsten Horn including 333 detailed suggestions on individual data. After checking these suggestions with holders and verifying them, I was able to improve the data in the studbook. It should be noted that most of those suggestions were accurate. Second, I used scientific papers involving lists of common hippopotamus held in Dresden and Hamburg zoo before the Second World War (Vosseler 1923; Sailer 1950). Third, I have obtained the data sets from some zoos for the first time. One of the most important data has been sent by Munich Zoo (Münchener Tierpark Hellabrunn) which has kept many hippos in the past. Hippopotamus coming from Munich were important breeders in other European zoos. Thus, the exact data on hippopotamus from Munich are valuable for living population. Besides the sources mentioned above, I received a few other comments concerning historical data from current holders of common hippos. All of this information is included in the current edition of the studbook. The first chapter of the studbook involves demographic analysis based on current data. The next chapter contains information on the genetics of the European population including inbreeding coefficients and mean kinship for all individuals living up to 31 st December 2008 and founder representation in the current population. Since the second edition of the studbook included the list of common hippopotamus bibliography, this third edition includes only references of papers published in 2008. A list of all references dealing with common hippopotamus sorted by topics or by authors are available from the author. This edition of the studbook involves data from holders contacted for the first time (Maubeuge, Pessac). In spite of the fact that this edition was prepared earlier in the year than the previous ones, the number of institutions which did not respond to the annual questionnaire in 2009 (5 institutions) was similar to that in 2008 (6 institutions). Four institutions that I have never received replies from (Arcachon, Erevan, Mallorca, and Napoli) were excluded from the list of living animals in this edition. I presume that the exclusion affected neither demographic nor genetic analyses of the European population, because the excluded institutions did not cooperate and they held old animals only.
