The following list contains several institutions (Abony, Chimkent, Ekaterinburg, and
Pombia) that have either not responded to the present studbook keeper or attempts to contact them
have failed. Since they should be housing young animals which they have obtained after the year of
2000, they are included in the list. Five other institutions (Debrecen, Maubeuge, Paris, Pistoia, and
Sofia) did not respond to the questionnaire in 2009. Thus, data concerning those institutions are
only valid to the end of 2007.
Four other institutions (Arcachon, Erevan, Mallorca, Napoli) were excluded from the
following list as they have not cooperated for long time and their data would be unreliable (see
Introduction). Several other zoos in Europe certainly hold common hippopotamus e.g. Beograd
Zoo. Thus, the following list can not be regarded as exact number of common hippoptamus in
European zoos.
