Again, it is important to remember that the origin of many individuals (and probably of several potential founders) remains unknown. In total, the European population comes from at least 35 hippopotamus imported from the wild. Three other animals coming from the wild still live, however their offspring have been sent out of the European population. Thus, the number of potentional founders is 38.
