The index is graded from1 - 100 where 100 are lamps that contain radiation from the whole visible spectre.DIN 5035 states six of these levels: 1A=90-100; 1B=80-90; 2A=70-80; 2B=60-70;3=40-60 and 4=20-40. 1B is recommended for indoor working environment.Luminous flux from the lamps divided by the power loss of the lamps.Luminous flux from the lamps divided by the power loss of the system(lamps, ballast and others).Relations between the lowest and the average value.Passes for both Illuminance and luminance.A condition that affects the visibility to see details or gives distaste. The contrastsensitivity expresses the least possible luminance contrast the eye can discern.Cs is influenced among others by glare from the visual field.Average lifetime is defined as when 50% of a larger amount of theproduct is still running.Service lifetime is defined as when 80% of the calculated lux level is reached.Economical lifetime is defined as when 70% of a larger amount of theproduct is still running.Table 1 Table 2Firstident. Technical informationLight sourcesTechnical informationLight sourcesLight sourcesHalogen lampsTraditional incandescent lamps lose partof their light intensity in the course of timesince tungsten evaporates from the filamentand condenses on the inside surface ofthe bulb forming a dark layer. In modernhalogen lamps they prevent this effect byadding halogenes to the filling gas. Withinthe so-called halogen cycle the halogenescombine with the evaporated tungsten. Thisgaseous combination drifting with the heatflow towards the hot filament the tungstenwill leave the combination and re-join thefilament. The released halogenes are againavailable for the cycle.Further advantages of halogen lamps:• equally bright light throughout life time• nice, brilliant light for fresh colours andattractive glamour effects• increased light output about 25 %compared with traditional incandescentlamps• small dimensionsHalogen high voltage lampsAre available as standard with bases E27,E40 and R7s. They don’t need a transformer.High pressure sodium lamps (HS)These lamps offer much light output becauseof their high efficiency despite of their smalldimensions. They are not very sensitiveto vibration and have proved as outdoorfloodlights on board of ships. You need aballast and an ignitor. The average lifetime isabout 6000 hours.High pressure sodium lamps withinstant ignition (HS)have bases at both ends and need a specialignitor. In hot condition the lamp requiresabout 10 seconds to ignite.Metal halide lamps (HI)are similar to high pressure mercury vapourlamps concerning design and operation.Light output and colour response havebeen improved by adding some halogencombinations. Depending on the type theymay operate with or without ignitor. There isa special version with one base at each endof the bulb enabling instant igniting in hotcondition by means of a high voltage puls.High pressure mercury lamps (HM)These lamps don’t need an ignitor but aballast. There are types with E27 andwith E40 base. The high pressure lampscontain a quartz burner as discharge tube. This tube is positioned inside a glass bulbon the inner surface of which there is afluorescent layer. Having been switchedon the burner slowly gets hot thus makingmore and more mercury evaporate. Themore mercury evaporated the brighter thelight output. All mercury evaporated meansthe lamp features its rated luminous flux. The average lifetime of this lamp is about6000 hours. Its disadvantage is that itreacts to shortest interruptions of powersupply and to severe voltage fluctuationsby extinguishing and then needing severalminutes to re-ignite.Traditional incandescent lampsIn general there are no problems with incandescentlamps in lighting systems. Theyare economical to install since they requirejust a lampholder and two terminals. Theiroperating position is not critical. They arealmost independent on ambient temperatureand can easily be dimmed by phasecontrol or phase reverse control.Luminaires for incandescent lamps may asa standard be operated on 115 V or 230V by simply changing the lamps. The averagelifetime is 1000 hours and thus notvery high. Incandescent lamps for navigationlights are a special case. They weredeveloped precisely for application withinan optical system and thus differ in manyaspects from standard lamps:• They have a special lampbase to makesure only these especially approvedlamps are used in navigation and signallinglights. Moreover the particular baseensures the lighting filament being alwaysin the correct position in relationship tolens and screening.• Their maximum light efficiency / minimumpower consumption ratio is set to its best.• Their lighting filament is suspended in avery special way to prevent screening thefilament in signalling lights.• Their production process is particularlysophisticated for smallest tolerances withthe filament and its suspension.• They are approved by the responsibleauthorities of almost all important countriesin the world.Fluorescent lampsTheir advantage is their excellent economy.Their light efficiency per watt of investedpower (lumen per watt) is very high. Theelongated shape results in a low luminousdensity on their surface and thus in littleglare. Lifetime is about 8000 hours if operatedwith conventional ballast respectivelyabout 12.000 with electronic ballast.Fluorescent lamps may be dimmed downto 1 % of their rated luminous flux withoutany problems if operated by dimmableelectronic ballasts.Sealed beamSealed Beam Lamps are designed forthose applications requiring specific bulbsize, base, and voltage. These lamps areoperated in special applications utilizinglow voltage sources. Most lamps aredesignated by common ANSI (AmericanNational Standards Institute). Available in12V/50W and 24V/100W.XENONXenonXenon lamps are DC-operated lampsthat are especially suited for applicationsrequiring excellent arc stability and a highluminance.Xenon lamps are short arc lamps in whichthe discharge arc fires in a pure xenonatmosphere under high pressure. Xenonlamps have a very good color renderingand extremely high luminance. For thisreason they are often used in light guidesystems, e.g. for endoscopy or dentaltechnology. The Xenon lamps are designed forhorizontal burning position, and excel withtheir compact dimensions.IgnitorsMetal halogen lamps and high pressuresodium lamps require a voltage of between800 and 5000V to start working. Thereare two different igniting device systems. One is based on additional voltage loadand the other one on pulsation technique.aqua signal has decided in favour of themodern extra voltage load system. Its bigadvantage is that the ignitor produces theignition voltage without loading it on theballast. This is of particular importancetowards the end of the lamp’s lifetime whenthe ignitor tries again and again to restartthe exhausted lamp. Moreover the extravoltage load technique offers reproducibleignition properties independent on theballast.aqua signal’s ignitors for high pressuredischarge lamps have currently beenimproved to adapt them to the extremelyrough operating conditions our floodlightshave to meet with. They may be calledunique since they not only ignite the lampstenderly but also supervise ignition processand operation and recognize lamp failuresdue to ageing in which case they carefullyswitch the lamp off.120 121

Technical informationProtection in hazardious areasTechnical informationProtection in hazardious areasThe basis principle of explosion protectionis the same worldwide. It is the preventionof flammable materials (gas, vapour, mist or dust) in dangerous quantitiesair (oxygen) and sources of ignition, occuring at the same time. Areas, wherethe occurance of explosive mixturesof flammable materials and air cannotbe prevented by applying primaryexplosion protection, special measuresfor the prevention of ignition sources areto be taken. Special construction andinstallation inquirements therefore applyto all electrical apparatus in hazardouslocations.According to EN 50014 andIEC 60079-0 the construction of explosionprotected apparatus can be designed invarious types of protection.
