There are over 300European coastal towns among thecompetitors. In mid-March, MonicaBengtsson and Andréas Eriksson tookpart in the world’s biggest cruise fairin Miami. Together with other Swedishports, they promoted Sweden asa cruise destination.“The first step is to get the cruise linesto come to Sweden at all, then tacklethe question of individual ports,” saysAndréas Eriksson, who has also visitedthe major lines in the USA as one offour representatives for the Baltic Region. Two countries – one destinationAgneta Gustavsson is port agent forLindholm Cruise Services, which looksafter most of the cruise calls at Helsingborg.Agneta works in Stockholm, but she is impressed by the way Helsingborgmarkets itself as a destination.“They have developed excellent relationswith many lines. The Port andthe city cooperate in a way that I’mnot aware of having seen anywhereelse in Sweden,” she says. For the 2009 cruise season, thirteencalls were booked for Helsingborg, compared to seven last year. The previousrecord of 8,300 passengers willbe exceeded by an almost ridiculousmargin – 23,000 are reckoned to havevisited here this summer.Even our neighbouring town of Elsinoreon the other side of the Straitbenefits from the visits of the cruiseships. Eimskip new container customer – increasedvolumes to the Port of HelsingborgIn April, the Icelandic shipping line Eimskip started containertraffic via Helsingborg. This has got off to a good start, and thelateral services - mainly stuffing – have become of much moresignificance than was expected.About EimskipEimskip was started in Iceland in1914 as the country’s first shippingline. Right from the start, Eimskip hasbeen their largest transport companyand has grown to be one of theworld’s major logistics and transportfirms. More information about themcan be found on www.eimskip.com.Kjell-Åke Ranft, sales manager,Port of HelsingborgPontus Klenell, MD for Eimskip Logistics ABThe agreement with Eimskip was finalisedat the end of March and thecontainer traffic started a few weekslater. This is a question of completelynew volumes via Helsingborg, withthe deal being signed after years ofsales work. The line chose the Port of Helsingborgin preference to another Swedishport. The new traffic is expectedto involve considerable additionalvolumes, making Eimskip one of thePort’s main container customers.Completely new volumesEimskip operates on the Reykjavikroute and via a number of north Europeanports, with Helsingborg beingtheir only call in Sweden.“With our new route, we count onbeing able to provide our Scandinaviancustomers with better services viaFredrikstad, Helsingborg and Århus. It is natural for us to concentrate onHelsingborg, where we already haveour Swedish office and terminal, withthe possibility for cold storage and drystorage,” says Pontus Klenell, MD forEimskip Logistics AB.This customer is not new to the Portof Helsingborg. They sailed via Helsingborguntil ten years ago, and now thecooperation has been reinstigated.“The agreement with Eimskip is excellentnews for all of us at the Port. These are completely new volumes, and this is a major deal for us. It isencouraging that customers believein our offering and actively choose usin preference to other first-class portsin Sweden,” says Kjell-Åke Ranft, salesmanager at the Port of Helsingborg.According to Eimskip, the volumes viaHelsingborg may increase. The line’scontainer volumes are on the up-andup,so this is a positive trend. With theshort period of experience since thestart, Kjell-Åke Ranft can declare thatdevelopments are positive.“The lateral services have grownmore rapidly than we expected. Theextent of stuffing, which is the methodof loading containers for safe seatransport, is considerable,” says Kjell-Åke Ranft.6

Port of Helsingborg highlights eco-successesThe Port of Helsingborg was one of Sweden’s first ports toreceive an environmental permit. But the work did not stopwith the County Administrative Board’s permit in 2008. Thereis continual reduction of the port’s emissions, environmentallogistics improve and refuse management is being made moreeffective. The Port is now presenting all its environmental efforts– and declares that the greatest environmental impactrequires political measures.Traffic manager Mats RosanderThe environmental permit in 2008was a milestone for the Port of Helsingborg. It was a stamp of approvalfor a number of different operationsand it regulates the Port’s environmentalimpact clearly. With the supportof the permit and requirements, thePort of Helsingborg has over the pastyear launched a number of environmentalprojects that are now havingan effect. A new publication from thePort of Helsingborg presents the latestprogress in the area of environmentalwork. No eco-villains“Many people see ports as equivalentto eco-villains. The opposite is in facttrue and, for several years, we in Helsingborghave invested substantially inreducing our environmental impact, driven by our own ambitions and bycustomer demands,” says the Port ofHelsingborg’s traffic manager. The Port has no control over the trafficthat passes through the strait ofÖresund – traffic that does not call atthe Port and does not have the antipollutionlevel of the ferries on the HHroute. It is essential that a reduction ofthis environmental impact is addressedat the highest political level.Recipe for reduced emissionsSome of the Port of Helsingborg’sinitiatives for reducing environmentalimpact:– Discount on port tariffs for vesselswith catalytic emission control– Catalytically cleaned ferries that donot emit any waste at all into Öresundand that can be connected to the landpower grid at night– Eco-driving has been introduced– The Combiterminal increases railtransport and reduces road transport– Sludge handling free of charge– Careful collection of ships’ refuse– Decontamination of ground areas– Reduction of noise in Port operations– Many new surveys and projects underway that will benefit the environmentporthelsingborgOur environmental work“We want to be able to influencethe emissions created by the vesselspassing through Öresund. By pointingout the problems, we hope to be ableto have a say in the development,”says Mats Rosander.Get your brochure from www.port.helsingborg.se or order fromac.elland@port.helsingborg.se.8

Cautious optimism about the futureAfter the global recession, the situation is starting to improve. There are positive signs in the Port’s own operations as wellas in the market in general. But it’s a slow process. This is thePort’s conclusion in an analysis of the market up to 2011.The Combiterminal shows a continual increase in volumesIt is an optimistic, if cautious, conclusionthat Sales Manager Kjell-ÅkeRanft comes to in his analysis. Thetide has turned, he says, judging fromthe different sources on which theevaluation has been based.Positive signalsInternationally, there are examplesof markets that have started to growagain. This applies not least to theFar East, headed by China, which hasbeen an important engine for globaleconomic development in recentyears. There are also positive signalsfrom markets that traditionally are ofgreat significance for Sweden, such asGermany and France. In the Port of Helsingborg, the trendvaries between different areas of operation. The situation for rail traffic, for instance, is very positive. Thanksto two new, extensive and significantshuttle services, 2009 should bedemonstrating good growth in comparisonwith last year. But, overall, recovery will take time.“We have been in contact with anumber of overseas lines and thereis widespread agreement that therewill be minor growth in 2009 and2010. Not until 2011 does the marketforesee more vigorous growth, butit will probably take additional timeKjell-Åke Ranft, sales managerbefore we are back at the volumesthat were achieved in the years priorto 2008,” says Kjell-Åke Ranft.Uncertainty factorsIt is still too early to say anythingdefinite about the trend. There areseveral uncertainty factors. Unemploymentis expected to increasein Sweden and this is of course notfavourable for developments on theSwedish market.”The fact is that the volumes havestarted to increase again,” says Kjell-Åke Ranft, “and we are planning for apositive trend.”

Bicentenary for the Port of HelsingborgThe Port of Helsingborg’s official date of birth is 27 September1809. The year 2009 thus involves a great deal of celebrationfor the Port, having progressed from a single wooden pier intobeing Sweden’s second largest container port.Scandlines, HH-Ferries and ACElinkOne of the autumn’s major bicentenaryevents was Open Port on Sunday27 September. The whole port area, which is normally closed to the public, was opened up for everyone who wasinterested in looking around. Theyhad the opportunity of seeing howships are loaded and unloaded, or goingonboard one of the tugs. Thingsthat are not normally possible for thegeneral public since the port area isfenced off.“It used to be that anyone could godown to the quay and more or lesstouch the ships, but this is not the casenow. After ‘9/11’, regulations were introducedfor all ports to have a specialsafety plan,” says Per-Olof Jansson,CEO for the Port of Helsingborg.Historically, the Port has been of greatsignificance for the city of Helsingborg. This is still the case – ten per cent ofthe town’s citizens depend directly orindirectly on the Port for their income, according to the Port’s marketingmanager, Andréas Eriksson. But operationsare not visible to the publicany more. The Open Port event wasone way for the Port’s managementto change this situation for a day.Another way is through the photo exhibitionwhich, for four autumn weeks, was on display in the city. A mixtureof old and new pictures depicted thePort and its operations over the years.Long historyPort operations in Helsingborg in factgo much further back than 200 years. As early the Middle Ages, local fishermansold herring to Germans andDutch. But, 200 years ago, in September1809, it was decided that thestate would give the city of Helsingborgmoney to build a proper port toreplace the simple piers then existing. After a somewhat slow start to theproject, Count Baltzar von Platen wascontracted in 1826 to draw up a planfor a new port in Helsingborg. vonPlaten had previously built the GötaCanal and was a well-known name. The new port – two piers and a dock– was inaugurated in 1832 by King KarlXIV Johan. One man who from early one hadhad significance for the Port of Helsingborgwas Consul Petter Olsson,a notable figure in the town’s history.Olsson was a captain of industry, oneof his areas being grain which, in themid-1800s, was exported in largequantities to England. He was behindan expansion of the Port that resultedin more docks of greater depth. In1870, Olsson was appointed GermanConsul, a title that parliament gave toprominent figures and politicians forThe Combiterminal Dettifoss Aurora12

The Head Officethe purpose of safeguarding Swedishtrading interests.Upswing when duty abolishedIn the mid-1850s, the ‘Öresund duty’was abolished, resulting in a markedincrease in trade and industry aswell as in Helsingborg’s population. The Öresund duty meant that shipspassing through the Strait had to pay aduty to the Danish state, the amountpayable depending on the value of thecargo. In the second half of the 1800s andthroughout the whole of the twentiethcentury, the Port continued togrow. In 1867, the Inner Harbour wasopened, in 1879 the Southern Harbourand, in 1891, the North Harbour. The Ocean Harbour was inauguratedin 1923, the Oil Harbour in 1930, theSouth Harbour in 1962 and, in 1985,the West Harbour. All of them – aswith the Port as a whole that is celebratingits bicentenary – were openedby kings.A concept that is unique for Helsingborgis the ‘tura’ trip over the Straitto Denmark and back. As of 1952,passports were not required betweenthe Nordic countries and, within just afew years, two shipping lines – AB Linjebussand Sundsbussarna – startedup ferry traffic between Helsingborgand Elsinore.More than eleven million people coverthese four kilometres across theStrait annually. In addition to passenger traffic, thePort of Helsingborg handles abouteight million tonnes of cargo eachyear, making it the country’s sixthlargest port. Among container ports,Helsingborg is second largest. No wish to speculatePort CEO Per-Olof Jansson is delightedto be part of the bicentenary.“It feels fantastic. I’ve worked here for20 years, which is a tenth of the Port’sexistence,” he says, pointing out toolthat people should not regard himpersonally as being part of the jubilee. But still.Per-Olof Jansson has no wish to speculateon how the Port of Helsingborgwill look in another 200 years. “Youhave to be aware of your own insignificancein a context like that,” hesays. He does not even want to guessabout whether the Port will still existor will have been phased out.“This depends totally on how theÖresund region develops. The portindustry has changed radically in recentyears, from ports being centrallylocated and being part of the towns,to being purely locations for logistics,”he says.Robin Hood Asli Uranus13

Scandlines and HH Ferries cooTo meet the increasingly tough competition from the ÖresundBridge, HH Ferries and Scandlines are joining up at the Knutpunktenterminal. The companies started their cooperation on1 September. The first visible change is the illuminatedsign that is in place over NyaSjögatan street. All traffic to the ferriesis now led this way and, with thesign, travellers get information aboutwhich ferry is leaving next. In abouta year’s time there will be joint ticketsales, check-in and berths.Departures every 15 minutes“The improved service means thatwe are coordinating departures toprovide one every 15 minutes fromjoint berths in Helsingborg and Elsinore. This means that there is alwaysa ferry in each port,” explained FredrikLantz, Area Director for StenaLine and chairman of the board ofHH Ferries, in a press release whenthe collaboration was presented inJune. The main purpose is to strengthen theHH-route in relation to the ÖresundBridge. The Bridge now has a marketshare of about 80 per cent of the privatecar traffic between Sweden andDenmark. Its share of freight traffichas also increased in recent years. Butthere are other advantages.“All sides are pleased with the agreement. The shipping lines, the City andwe at the Port are all winners,” saysthe Port of Helsingborg’s traffic managerMats Rosander. For the lines and the Port, it’s a questionof rationalisation benefits. Thecity of Helsingborg will get access toan extremely attractive seaside locationfor exploitation when HH Ferriesmove in to the terminal at Knutpunkten. In addition, environmentalimpact is further reduced.Positive emission controlEmissions from the ferries have alreadybeen minimised by all of theirengines having selective catalyticemission control. Now, the traffic willbe optimised.“Departures will be frequent duringbusy periods but fewer during thosehours of the day when pressure isless. The tonnage used can also beadapted according to requirements. This results in reduced emissions,”says Mats Rosander.14

Unique photo exhibition depicts the Portof Helsingborg’s 200-year historyTwo centuries after the Port of Helsingborg’s foundation, it hasdeveloped into one of the world’s most modern ports. Withthe celebration of its bicentenary on 27 September, the Porttook that opportunity to present a completely new, photographicexhibition.Starting on 14 September and lastingfor one month, the Port of Helsingborgplaced highlight on its historicimportance in the development ofthe city, with the images being displayedon large screens on the ElsinoreQuay in the North Harbour.100 historical picturesThe exhibition’s hundred enlargedpictures depicted the Port’s employeesand lively operations frompast to present. The Port’s evolutioncould be traced in photographs andpaintings, many of which were trackeddown and donated by residents ofHelsingborg. Over the course of 18months, retired production leadersÅke Simonsson and Jan Anderssonworked hard with a considerable volumeof illustrative material.”The work of selecting photos andpictures aroused great memories ofthe past and we were delighted tomake this journey back in time. It wasfascinating to see how much actuallyhas happened in the Port which, fortwo centuries, has been the strongheart of the city. We’ve done a lotof work in the archives and at thehomes of former Port colleagues. As citizens of Helsingborg, we canbe proud of the Port’s history,” saysJan Andersson, who worked for fortyyears in the Port.”There’s a lot we can learn from thehistory of Helsingborg. The role ofthe Port has been central to howHelsingborg has developed. Wewere very pleased to be able to illustrateour part in the developmentof Helsingborg in this very public, exciting exhibition,” says PO Jansson,CEO for the Port of Helsingborgsince 1992.The exhibition on the Elsinore Quay.16
