COMMUNITY RELATIONS
The Sacramento Kings are dedicated to making a positive
and meaningful difference in the lives of people
in need and at risk in the Sacramento region having
donated more than $20 million to Sacramento area
charities in the 12 years of Maloof family ownership.
The Kings community initiatives include implementing
fitness events throughout the community as part of the
Get Fit with the Kings program, conducting an annual
Season of Giving around the holidays and providing
opportunities for underprivileged children to attend
Kings games through the Kings for the Community
program. In addition, Joe and Gavin Maloof were the
inaugural winners of the World Sports Humanitarian
Hall of Fame’s Most Involved Executives for 2001 and
the team’s efforts were recognized with the 2004 Pro
Team Humanitarian Award, which recognizes the
franchise with the best community service program
across all professional sports.
Get Fit with the Kings
The Sacramento Kings, The
California Endowment, the
Sacramento City Unified
School District and UC Davis
Health System have partnered
to create the "Get Fit with the Kings" program. Its focus
is to teach Sacramento-area youth the importance of
creating and living a healthy lifestyle and to encourage
youth to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day. As
part of the "Get Fit with the Kings" program, Kings
players, staff, Sacramento Kings Dancers and Kings Breakers host monthly fitness timeouts, health clinics
and rallies at local schools and after school programs.
Kings for the Community
The "Kings for the Community"
program was developed by Kings
players and personnel as a way to give
back to the community. Throughout
the 2010-11 season, special groups
and children from underserved communities
attended Kings home games
courtesy of Kings players, Team President of Basketball
Operations Geoff Petrie and coaches. Thousands of
deserving local children and community members
benefited from the program.
Season of Giving
Each holiday season, Maloof Sports
& Entertainment partners with
Wells Fargo to spread holiday
cheer throughout the Sacramento
community through its “Season
of Giving” initiative. Kings players,
Sacramento Kings Dancers, Slamson
and volunteers from Maloof
Sports & Entertainment and Wells
Fargo participate in charitable giving and holiday fun
benefiting children and families throughout the region.
Activities include a Thanksgiving dinner celebration,
children’s hospital visits, shopping sprees, toy and
bike donations and holiday food distributions.
Community Assist Series
The Sacramento Kings developed a program that caters to non-profit organizations
and their fundraising efforts. The Kings Community Assist Series offers a way for
non-profits to partner with the Kings to create awareness about an event or cause
and fundraise in a unique and creative way.
Jr. Kings
The Sacramento Kings recognize the youth of our community is the future of the NBA.
With that in mind, we developed the Jr. Kings program. The Jr. Kings program provides
an opportunity for teams and groups of kids (18 and under) to attend a Sacramento Kings
game this season and receive a number of other exciting benefits! The Jr. Kings program is a
great way for youngsters in the Sacramento region to unite and interact with the Kings.
Teacher Appreciation Program
The Kings are partnering with U.S. Bank and the Sacramento County Office of Education to help recognize the
top teachers in the Sacramento County. The teachers identified as “Sacramento County Teachers of the Year”
by SCOE are invited to a designated “Teacher Appreciation Night” Kings game where they are recognized oncourt
for their efforts in the classroom.
Black History Month
Maloof Sports & Entertainment and Wells Fargo celebrate the rich
history of African-American culture during Black History Month. With
assistance from key community organizations, this celebration is a
chance to recognize community leaders and “unsung heroes” in the
African-American community as “Black History Month All-Stars.” The
“All-Stars” are presented with an award during an on-court presentation
at a Kings home game.
Cesar Chavez Day of Volunteerism
In 2004, Maloof Sports & Entertainment became the first private, nonagricultural
organization to recognize California’s new Cesar Chavez
Day as a holiday. To truly honor Cesar Chavez’ lifelong contributions to
humanity and his commitment to community service, Joe and Gavin
Maloof decided to make the holiday a ‘day on’ instead of a day off for
their employees. Cesar Chavez’ belief that people have an obligation to
contribute to their community mirrors the Maloof family’s commitment to
community service. Maloof Sports & Entertainment, along with presenting
partner Wells Fargo, will once again honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez
with its ninth annual Cesar Chavez Day of Volunteerism.
Kings Reading and Learning Centers
The Kings work hands-on in the community by refurbishing and building Kings Reading and Learning Centers.
Locations may include, but are not limited to, school and public libraries, computer rooms and non-profit community
centers. Volunteer Team Members from Maloof Sports & Entertainment work on rooms or buildings in
need of upgrades for students to read and study.
Adrienne Maloof Camp Kindness
Adrienne Maloof's Camp Kindness and Animal Adventure Club at the Sacramento Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals is a comprehensive, year-round program serving more than 250 children annually. This
includes after-school programs, day camps and humane education activities for kids.
Kings Women’s Organization
Founded in 1993, the Kings Women's Organization helps facilitate the team's efforts through support of community
outreach programs, awareness campaigns and fundraising events focusing on women and children
in need in the Sacramento region. Members are comprised of wives, female relatives and significant others
of the Kings players, coaches, medical and media staff. The Kings Women’s Organization joins together with
players, Maloof Sports & Entertainment Team Member volunteers and other groups to make a positive impact
in the community.
St. HOPE Academy
Former NBA player, Sacramento native and current
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson founded the St.
HOPE Academy in his childhood neighborhood of
Oak Park to instill the life lessons taught to him by his
grandparents. Because of Mayor Johnson’s dedication
to Oak Park and the shared vision with Maloof Sports
& Entertainment to make a difference to at-risk and
in-need families in Sacramento, Joe and Gavin Maloof
announced a 10-year commitment to support his efforts
in Oak Park during the 2001-02 season. A total
of $500,000 has been donated by Maloof Sports &
Entertainment to support Mayor Johnson’s project for
the children in Oak Park.
NBA CARES
NBA Cares is the league's global social responsibility program that builds
on the NBA's long tradition of addressing important social issues. The NBA
and its teams and players support a wide range of initiatives, programs and
non-profit partners that strive to positively impact children and families
around the world. As part of the league’s mission to demonstrate leadership
in social responsibility, NBA Cares reaches communities through philanthropy,
hands-on service, and the creation of community legacy projects.
Since the program’s October 2005 launch, the league, its players, and its
teams have donated more than $165 million to charity, provided more than
1.7 million hours of hands-on service, and created more than 615 places
where kids and families can live, learn, or play. NBA Cares reaches millions
of children and adults through unique programs – including NBA/WNBA
FIT and Basketball without Borders – that support education, youth and
family development, and health and wellness. The league and its teams
and players also promote environmental awareness and sustainability
through NBA Green. During annual high-profile league events, including
NBA All-Star and The Finals, NBA Cares initiates community outreach
efforts to tap into the power of sport for positive social change. In addition,
this year the league launched the NBA Cares Community Caravan,
a year-round community and fan engagement program, through which
the NBA family will reach more than 10,000 schools and community
centers and touch the lives of more than 15 million fans. Thanks to strong
partnerships with internationally recognized organizations – including
KaBOOM!, Special Olympics, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, UNICEF,
the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the UN Foundation – NBA Cares makes a
positive and lasting impact in communities around the world. For more
