1New Voicesfor the 21st CenturyWelcome to our seventh season.W. B. Yeats was searching for a theme. During hissearch he wrote a poem about the impossibility offinding a new theme, of ever moving beyond theboundaries of his own heart. The poem is called TheCircus Animal’s Desertion (1939) and its final stanzareads as follows:“A mound of refuse or the sweepings of a street,Old kettles, old bottles, and a broken can,Old iron, old bones, old rags...Now that my ladder’s gone I must lie downwhere all the ladders startIn the foul rag-and-bone shop of the heart.”In the UK, 19th-century rag-and-bone menscavenged unwanted rags, bones, metal and otherwaste, from the towns and cities where they lived.Typically these were men who had fallen on hardtimes and lived in squalor, surviving on the proceedsof what they collected each day.Noah Haidle, a twenty-six-year-old playwright, was also searching for a theme. During his searchhe encountered Yeats’s poem and reimagined theIrish poet’s bone grubbers for the 21st centuryin his play Rag and Bone. It is a fantastical taleabout the possibilities of moving hearts intodifferent boundaries, into the bodies of diverselydiscontented people searching to feel somethingdifferent. Two brothers, George and Jeff, run “TheLadder Store”, which is actually a front for theirbusiness in which black-market hearts are boughtand sold for people who suffer the penury of notfeeling enough. It is a “heartfelt” comedy about the limits of feelingand the consequences of either feeling nothing ortoo bloody much. Join our Rep 21 grads on thisstrange, delightful, and sometimes heartbreakingjourney.Change isn’t easy. Take it from Roy, a Vietnam vetreturning home to his beloved Maynard, Texas. He goes back to everything and everyone heremembers, only to find that things aren’t the way heleft them. James McLure’s Lone Star is a hilariousstudy of a pair of “good ole boys” carousing on aSaturday night. It is the companion piece to followLaundry and Bourbon, which introduces us tothe women of Maynard who spend most of a hotafternoon (while the boys spend most of the night)hanging out, gossiping, confiding, commiseratingand “jest plain settin’ around with one another.”Their dead-end town on the edge of the desert is“the kinda place there’s allus somethin happenin,‘cept nothin seems to change much.”What does change, though, is the depth of insightand understanding that these often very funny, often very desperate, always overly-familiar peoplegain about one another, and share with us.Change is inevitable. In that sense it isunchangeable. It is not a cliche that life happensto us when we are making other plans. RobertBurns’ poem To a Mouse puts it best:“The best laid schemes of mice and menOften go awry.”Supposedly God laughs at our schemes. A fewmonths ago I gave him a belly laugh. And He gaveme some time off.I want to thank my talented crew, Tracey, Josh, and Maureen, for keeping the good ship Canadoreafloat this season and making sure Rep 21 arrivesat its destination. Their sailorship is sound, theirartistry keen. Thanks to David and Chantal forgreasing the engines, and to Bill for patching whennecessary. And to Anna for being there.Enjoy!Rod CarleyArtistic Director - CoordinatorCanadore College Theatre Arts Program

Guest Artists And Production Team - 19The gathering place opened its doors in September of 2003 with an activepool of approximately 250 volunteers. Well over 200,000 meals have beenserved with an average of 135 guests each day, a number which continues toincrease. As a not-for-profit organization and registered charity, the gatheringplace receives no operational funding from federal, provincial or municipalgovernments and relies entirely on donations for it’s operational budget. As many business owners will attest, seeing patron numbers increase isgenerally a positive thing, however not in this case. Unfortunately, for somepatrons this is their only meal of the day. As the demand has increased, thegathering place has looked at ways of fulfilling this need and have recentlybegan a new initiative that has resulted in fresh fruit and vegetables beingmade available. In the spring of 2012 the infrastructure for a community garden was put inplace with the help of many local partners. The gathering place is lookingforward to it’s first full harvest this year and building on this initiative movingforward.Canadore is thrilled to be partnering again this year with the gatheringplace through it’s summer theatre company Rep21. Theatre Arts graduateswill perform in three highly-acclaimed productions and in lieu of chargingadmission, the contemporary theatre company is collecting financial donationsin support of the gathering place of North Bay.To find out more information on how you can be part of the gathering placeplease visit www.thegatheringplacenorthbay.orgIf you are interested in assisting with volunteering at the garden or donatingplants for the garden you can contact Volunteer Coordinator, Mandi Dunfordby emailing thegatheringplacegarden@gmail.com
