SG-235 Manual7.4 WEATHERDECK MOUNTINGWeatherdeck mounting can be used. Years of experience have shown thatinside mounting or even splash-proof mounting is preferred, particularly incold, damp environments. In tropical use, shielding from direct sunlight isdesirable. The base of the antenna should be connected to the high voltage feed-throughinsulator on the housing. (Note: this insulator is not designed to supportheavy mechanical loads. If such loading is encountered, the use of a straininsulator is desirable.)The ground system should be connected to the 1/4 inch stainless steel stud protrudingfrom the bottom of the housing. Connection to the ground system is ofextreme importance for a successful installation. Ground runs of over a fewinches should be made from 4 inch wide copper strap or larger. The actualground system should be as good as possible, as the ground is an integral partof the antenna system. See section 5.2.2 on grounding. However, couplers ingeneral require the antenna parameters to be within the range of the tuningparameters or the coupler will not find a satisfactory match. It should alwaysbe remembered that the computer in the SG-235 is unable to second-guess theinstaller.A PROPER ANTENNA/GROUND INSTALLATION IS OF GREATIMPORTANCE. REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOUR STATION ISA BASE STATION, MARINE, OR LAND MOBILE.SETUP FOR ELECTRICAL CHECK OUT:8.0 ELECTRICAL CHECKOUTAfter the SG-235 antenna coupler has been installed, the SSB transmittershould be adjusted to the highest frequency desired, and a directional wattmeter (i.e. Bird Model 43) should be inserted into the transmission line. Thetransmitter should then be powered. The SG-235 will begin to tune when RFpower is applied, and you will hear a "clattering" of PC mounted relays. If theantenna length and ground parameters are within range, the relay noises willstop when just a few words are spoken, and the reflected power on the wattmeter would indicate a value of better than 2:1 VSWR. The "TUNED" LED, whichis mounted on the PC board will light, and if there is a remote "TUNED" indicator,it will also light.SGC Inc. SGC Building, 13737 S.E. 26th St. Bellevue, WA 98005 USAP.O.
