<strong>Poster</strong> Abstracts<br />

Although student advising is an important function <strong>of</strong> a dental<br />

school program, research on the evaluation <strong>of</strong> advising systems is<br />

scarce. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this study was to compare a recently<br />

implemented revised interactive advising program (RIAP) with a<br />

traditional advising approach (TAA). Two dental classes (3rd, 4th)<br />

comprised the RIAP group while the remaining two dental classes<br />

(1st, 2nd) and alumni group experienced the TAA. A confidential<br />

number-coded mail survey, including 16 Likert-scale items, assessed<br />

the perceptions <strong>of</strong> all dental students and the graduates <strong>of</strong> the two<br />

preceding years concerning the efficacy <strong>of</strong> the WVU School <strong>of</strong><br />

Dentistry student advising system. Assessments included the<br />

following topics: advisor availability, location and contact; sensitivity<br />

to academic needs; helpfulness in career counseling and time<br />

management; and problem identification, early intervention and<br />

development <strong>of</strong> an action plan for resolution. The response rate was<br />

74 % for the dental students and 47% for the alumni. Results indicated<br />

that in 10 <strong>of</strong> the 16 questions a statistically significant difference was<br />

seen between the two groups. RIAP participants were more likely to<br />
