Every quarter, data are forwarded to the central database at the National Institute<strong>of</strong> Public Health <strong>and</strong> the Environment (RIVM), Bilthoven, the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s, where the projectis coordinated”.The Swedish Strategic Programme Against Antibiotic Resistance (STRAMA) is adecentralized nationwide organization operating through county medical <strong>of</strong>ficers toimplement the national plan to prevent resistance to antibiotics. It was founded in 1995 <strong>and</strong>has been funded by the government since 2000. Through the programme, nationwidesurveillance <strong>of</strong> AMR <strong>and</strong> ABM is undertaken <strong>and</strong> a package <strong>of</strong> interventions aimed atimproving prescribing <strong>and</strong> reducing consumer dem<strong>and</strong> has been implemented. Antibioticuse has significantly decreased since the programme started <strong>and</strong> AMR rates are low. Approval was also obtained from the respective institutions for collectingsamples for testing. Informed consent was obtained from all subjects <strong>and</strong> facilitiesparticipating in the pilot studies.15
