A Message from the ChairmanWelcome to the 2012 Bartercard National Basketball League season, which is set to produce anotherexciting competition as the standard continues to rise each year.Last year saw the introduction of a new Final Four format, with the two semi-finals and the final beingplayed on the same weekend at the TSB Arena in Wellington. This proved to be highly successful, with bumper crowds and a thrilling climax to the league. The new format received overwhelminglypositive feedback and as a result the 2012 Bartercard NBL will adopt the same structure.Scheduling the season remains a difficult juggling act, with demands on the elite players at bothends of the season from the ANBL and the Tall Blacks. Clearly our teams need their best playersavailable at the end of the season, therefore the competition will be concluded in May in order to allowsufficient time for the Tall Blacks to prepare for the Olympic Games qualifying tournament. This year also sees the reintroduction of Harbour Heat to the Bartercard NBL, following a 12-monthabsence whilst their organisation underwent some significant change. We welcome them back withopen arms and acknowledge the tremendous amount of work that has taken place in order to makethis possible. On the other side of the ledger, it is extremely disappointing that the Waikato Pistonshave been forced to take a break this year, although I am sure that they will follow the example ofprevious franchises which have taken time out to re-group and come back stronger than ever in2013.This league only exists thanks to the hard work and passion of a great number of people, some inthe limelight and many more behind the scenes. A big thank you goes to the players, coaches, referees, team owners, administrators, volunteers, commercial partners, funding agencies and media fortheir continued support of this wonderful competition. A special mention to Paul Bolte and his teamat Bartercard, Nick Mills, Tara, Nick Junior and Mel at Starpak, and the Boards of both the NBL andBBNZ. It is your faith and support which enables the NBL to continue to develop into a showcase forthe game and a pathway for aspiring Tall Blacks throughout the country.Have a great season!Sam Rossiter-SteadChairmanBartercard National Basketball League3 BARTERCARD NBL Handbook 2012
