CULTURAL HERITAGE & SOCIAL VALUES ASSESSMENTDeen Maar Island, Fitzroy River and Lake Condah to smaller camping and meeting places. Italso includes domestic sites (e.g. shacks, huts, houses and small family settlements), work places(e.g. Borthwick’s meatworks, Porters Mill) and recreation sites (e.g. fishing sites and HeywoodFootball and Netball Club).The Landscape type includes places that are of a great extent, as opposed to the Landscapefeature type which tend to be places of a smaller extent (e.g. creek or falls) and often refer to aspecific natural feature (e.g. a particular cave or tree). Examples of places in the Landscape typeare Mount Richmond, Mount Eccles (Budj Bim), Glenelg River, particular swamps, lakes andentire reserves and parks such as Lower Glenelg National Park, Narrawong Flora Reserve andCobboboonee National Park.Within the Historic feature type are structures and buildings, for example the sheep wash andThomas Track in Mount Eccles, to historic homesteads and huts, Bats Ridge lime kiln andCape Nelson Lighthouse. Places within the Recreation site category include the GreatSouthwest Walk, horse camps and tracks, various camping sites and picnic grounds.Places identified by Gunditjmara and non-Indigenous peopleAnalysis of the data indicates that a majority of valued places identified by Gunditjmara werespecific locations. These places were often identified as having historical value due to directfamily connections or as meeting places, for example, sites for fishing, fishtraps, camping andmeeting places, ceremonial grounds and houses of family members or other Gunditjmaracommunity members. The larger areas identified include Lake Condah, Mount Clay, BudjBim (Mount Eccles), Deen Maar (Lady Julia Percy Island), Kurtonitj Indigenous ProtectedArea (IPA), towns such as Heywood and small family settlements such as at Allambie andGreenvale. The GIS mapping demonstrates that a majority of the valued places are located inthe south east portion of the planning area. This may be influenced by the locality of the OpenHouse workshops that most Gunditjmara people attended; this pattern was also noted in ourInterim Report as reflecting the location of missions and post-mission Gunditjmarasettlements.Non-Indigenous participants also identified places with Aboriginal connections. They also listedspecific sites, but tended to identify broader areas, such as entire reserves, lakes, swamps,beaches, the Glenelg River and estuary, and various mountains. Smaller landscape features werealso identified, for example horse tracks, caves, cliffs, Glenelg Gorge, Bat’s Ridge and Tom’sTree and Stringey’s Tree. Non-Indigenous attendees identified valued places that wereconcentrated in the southern portion of the study region, with the large landscape areas locatedin the west (Figure 3).Influence of the Open House localityThe Open House sessions were held in five localities: Casterton in the north and Nelson,Heywood and Macarthur in the southern portion of the planning area. As a result of four outof the five workshops being held in the southern portion, a majority of the identified placescorrespond with the localities.The Macarthur Open House attendees identified places that were generally located within30kms, and a similar pattern was evident for the Nelson Open House.By contrast, the places identified at the Casterton Open House were spread across the wholeplanning area.At the Heywood Open House, the identified places were focussed in the south-west of theplanning area, particularly within the National Parks. A majority of places identified by theattendees of the Portland Open House were located in the centre of the southern region,stretching north from Cape Nelson State Park to Cobboboonee National Park, followed byfewer places further west.18
VOLUME 4: VALUED PLACESPlaces outside CountriesOf the 154 unique places mentioned, a total of 15 were located within the study area butoutside of a defined Country. The types of places varied and were identified by both OpenHouse participants and in the Gunditjmara community mapping sessions. Examples of thoseidentified by Gunditjmara included campsites, massacre sites and a ceremony ground. Non-Indigenous participants identified Landscapes, Landscape features and places with an Aboriginalconnection, for example Nigretta Falls, Wilkin Flora and Fauna Reserve and Wannon Falls.Additional to this, eight places identified during the community cultural mapping process werelocated outside of the study area, for example Deen Maar Island and Buckley Swamp.19
