Message from theArtistic DirectorThe ability of performing arts organizations tocontinually renew and challenge themselves artisticallyis a key to their success and to maintaining thestrong and mutually fruitful relationship they havewith their audience. The National Ballet of Canadahas always prided itself on just this ability. In this, oursixtieth year, we are well aware of the rich and variedheritage the company embodies; but we are equallyaware of the need to explore, investigate and engagewith the present and the future of the art of dance. It is one of the reasons the National Ballet is knowninternationally for its artistic vigor and creativity. The past year exemplifies this especially well. Theexperience of working with Wayne McGregor onstaging his thrilling work Chroma was unforgettablefor everyone involved, and certainly for our audiences. Our dancers threw themselves into the dauntinglycomplex and physically demanding choreographywith an energy, focus and enthusiasm that astonishedeven Wayne. And the excitement they felt in bringingto life his extraordinary vision was translated toeveryone who saw it.The same could be said for Russian Seasons,Alexei Ratmansky’s choreographic paean to hishomeland and its rich cultural and religious heritage.Complemented by a truly ravishing score, masterfullyconducted by David Briskin, the work was a sensation, overwhelming our audiences throughout its run.And finally, there was the enormous success, bothartistically and financially, of Alice’s Adventures inWonderland, a work that we co-produced withEngland’s Royal Ballet. Christopher Wheeldon’simaginative adaptation of the famous Lewis Carrollstory was a thrill to watch as it came together andfinally worked its magic onstage. Every show wassold out to ecstatic audiences and overall it set newbox office records. All of these works were important in themselves, but staging them has also laid the groundwork forworking with all of these extraordinary artists on futureballets, the first of which we will see realized this yearwith Alexei’s new Romeo and Juliet.Other highlights from 2010/2011 were the return ofthe gloriously refurbished Onegin, the always popularErik Bruhn Prize and the continued success of ouroutreach programmes through our own initiativesYOU dance and Dance About and our participation inCulture Days.As always, I want to thank the dancers, musicians, administrative and production staff for their stellarwork, and our patrons, subscribers, volunteers andboard members for their tireless efforts andcommitment to the company. Finally, a word of special thanks to Lucille Joseph, our Board Chair for the past three years who iscompleting her term this year. She has made aninvaluable contribution to the company in her timewith us and I want to wish her all the best in herfuture endeavours.Karen Kain, C.C., LL.D., D.Litt., O.Ont.Artistic DirectorKaren Kain. Total assets, with investmentsvalued at market, grew by 17.2% ($6.6 million) from $32.7 millionas at June 30, 2010 to $38.3 million as at June 30, 2011, an alltimehigh, and the grant to the National Ballet reached a new highwatermark at $1.05 million. After being forced to suspend the grantduring the crisis, it was a great pleasure to pay out a secondconsecutive record grant. The strong growth in total assets reflected continued success inattracting new gift contributions from donors ($2.3 million), anothermatching grant from the Endowment Incentives component of theCanada Cultural Investment Fund ($1.4 million) and a good netinvestment performance ($4.0 million or 14.0 percent). On behalf of The National Ballet of Canada, EndowmentFoundation, I would like to thank our donors for their continuedinvestment in the future strength and excellence of the company through their support for theEndowment Foundation. Donor contributions are the lifeblood of the Endowment Foundation’sgrowth, both in their own right and because of the matching funds they attract from Government. Our Development team deserves enormous credit for their improved cultivation andstewardship of donors and for their skill in matching gift opportunities to donor wishes. Mostimportantly, however, our ability to attract financial support from donors reflects their engagementwith the artistry they experience in the theatre and the confidence they have that the company’sfinancial affairs are well managed. On this score, we could not be better served. Karen Kain’sextraordinary programming and artistic leadership have delivered performances that have boththrilled and challenged audiences and the senior management team under Kevin Garland hasworked arduously to maintain financial discipline in what have been truly difficult times. I joinLucille Joseph in heartily congratulating Karen and Kevin for a stunning artistic and financial successin 2010/11.The disciplined and conservative investment approach adopted by the Endowment Foundationboard before the financial crisis has continued to serve us well. While we did not avoid lossesduring the worst of the crisis, our funds significantly outperformed their benchmarks, helping uspreserve capital and putting us in a stronger position to participate in the recovery. As marketsturned, the Endowment Foundation’s investments have not only fully recovered, but a solidcushion to protect against future market dislocations has been re-established. While there arestill many economic headwinds and systemic risks to contend with in today’s post-crisis world,I believe the Endowment Foundation is better placed than ever to fulfill its role in providing stableand predictable support to the National Ballet. It is my sincere pleasure to thank the Endowment Foundation board for their diligent effortsand wise counsel over the past year and to recognize and thank our donors for their generousand unwavering support. Without you, the National Ballet’s current success and future prosperitywould not be possible.Heather Ogden and Guillaume Côté in Emergence.
