In Memory: Lois Smith, O.C.Turnout:Young Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in Support <strong>of</strong> DanceOn January 22, 2011, Canada lost one <strong>of</strong> the foundingmembers <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Ballet</strong> <strong>of</strong> Canada, <strong>for</strong>merPrincipal Dancer Lois Smith, at the age <strong>of</strong> 81. Ms.Smith began her training at the BC School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Ballet</strong>be<strong>for</strong>e joining the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Ballet</strong> with her husbandDavid Adams in 1951. As a Principal Dancer, Ms.Smith per<strong>for</strong>med all the leading classical roles in suchballets as Swan Lake, Giselle, La Sylphide, Cinderella,<strong>The</strong> Sleeping Beauty and Coppélia. After retiring fromthe company in 1969, Ms. Smith opened <strong>The</strong> LoisSmith School <strong>of</strong> Dance, later part <strong>of</strong> the Per<strong>for</strong>mingArts Program <strong>of</strong> George Brown College. Ms. Smithwas the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Dance Program at GeorgeBrown College from 1979 to 1988. She was made anOfficer <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> Canada in 1980. In 1998, Ms.Smith received a bronze star on Vancouver’s GranvilleStreet from the BC Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame in recognition <strong>of</strong>her extraordinary contributions to dance. Members enjoy rare access to the artists <strong>of</strong> the <strong>National</strong><strong>Ballet</strong> and attend exclusive events to learn more about dance. <strong>Annual</strong> donations help to build the future <strong>of</strong> the<strong>National</strong> <strong>Ballet</strong> by supporting the RBC Apprentice Training Programme.<strong>The</strong> Nutcracker: 15 Magical YearsJames Kudelka’s production <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Nutcracker hadits 15th anniversary in 2010/11. Created in 1995,<strong>The</strong> Nutcracker sets E.T.A H<strong>of</strong>fman’s holiday storyin 19th century Russia and follows Misha and Marieon a magical journey as they battle the Mouse Tsar,travel to the glittering winter realm <strong>of</strong> the SnowQueen, visit the magnificent palace <strong>of</strong> the Sugar PlumFairy and much more. With breathtaking sets andcostumes by Santo Loquasto, Mr. Kudelka’sadaptation <strong>of</strong> this holiday classic is among the mostlavish and finely choreographed in the world. <strong>The</strong>Nutcracker has become an annual tradition <strong>for</strong> manyfamilies. Over 814,635 people have attended <strong>The</strong>Nutcracker in 15 years and it has earned $38 millionat the box <strong>of</strong>fice.<strong>The</strong> Nutcracker is made possible by generous financialsupport from production underwriters Sandra & JimPitblado, Lawrence and Ann Heisey and an anonymousfriend <strong>of</strong> the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Ballet</strong>.Lois Smith in Giselle.
