new yorkstate’smarriageequality actROUNDTABLE FACULTY SHARE THEIR VIEWS ON CURRENT EVENTSOn June 24, 2011, New York became the sixthand largest state in the country to legalizesame-sex marriage. A similar effort in Albanyfailed in 2009. This year, support for the issue wasled by Governor Andrew Cuomo whose top aidecoordinated the efforts of local gay-rightsorganizations in a campaign leading up to thevote. The Senate, dominated by Republicans,allowed for a full vote on the act, and each memberwas left to vote according to his or her conscience.In the end, four Republicans joined all butone Democrat in support of the measure and thebill passed 33 to 29.Three faculty members provide to Superscripttheir perspectives on the Marriage EqualityAct and same-sex marriage in New York and thenation. Randall Balmer is the Ann Whitney OlinProfessor of American religious history. He is anadvisory editor for Christianity Today, and his workhas appeared in scholarly journals, in the popularpress, and on PBS. Justin Phillips, Associate Professorof Political Science, studies American state andurban politics, and his current projects analyze theeffects of public opinion on sub-national policymakingand the power of governors in negotiationswith legislatures. Professor Robert Shapiro,Political Science, is advisory committee chair forPublic Opinion Quarterly and previously served asPresident of the New York Chapter of the AmericanAssociation for Public Opinion Research.
