CELEBRATING 21 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA<strong>The</strong> Villages Chapter - <strong>American</strong> <strong>Singles</strong> <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>Association</strong> - June 2013<strong>Message</strong> <strong>From</strong><strong>The</strong> <strong>President</strong>May again was a greatmonth for golf. <strong>The</strong> reductionof golf fees madegolf even more enjoyable.We continue to getnew members each month. Our Maymeeting consisting of a cookout and bocceand shuffleboard was a huge success.Thanks to Carole Mosbaugh and hercommittee and the many individuals whocontributed to its success. Jack Parker,Roger Johnson and Bart Henkle did agreat job handling the grill.<strong>The</strong> National ASGA offered an incentiveto ASGA individuals who did not renewtheir membership prior to February 28,2013. We had seven members renew as aresult of this monetary incentive. <strong>The</strong>theme of why these members came backwas not only because of the incentive butbecause of what we as a club accomplished-increasedcommunication, newactivities and greater participation by clubmembers.<strong>The</strong> Board Members are working veryhard to make this a club that members willenjoy and will want to participate in all theAlways keep your wrist solid and avoid flexing them for putts or chip shots.This is imperative to achieve consistency.activities. We want your input about howwe are doing and new ideas from each ofyou. Hope you enjoy a little golf historyand if not let me know.In a 1998 publication <strong>The</strong>y Changed theWorld, 200 Icons Who Have Made a Differencethe only golfer to be named wasBabe Didrikson Zaharias. Other athleteswho were named in this publication includedthe following: Billie Jean King, JoeNamath, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson,George Herman “Babe” Ruth, and JimThorpe. She was considered the greatestwoman athlete the world had everknown and in 1950 an Associated PressPoll named Babe Zaharias as the womanathlete of the first half of the century. Herstaggering performances in track, field andgolf assured her place in history. It washer human side, however, that guaranteedBabe’s place in memory.She got her nickname “Babe” (afterBabe Ruth) when she hit five homeruns ina baseball game. She could run, jump,throw the javelin and the discus, play tennis,polo, basketball, marbles, soccer, lacrosse,billiards, she could dive, shoot,pitch, bat homeruns, kick, fence, pass,bowl, and skate. She was an exquisiteballroom and adagio dancer, played theharmonica well enough to be a professionalat it, excelled at gin rummy, was agreat cook and a great seamstress, andcould type 100 words per minute.She could have been a one-woman trackteam in 1932 Olympics but women werelimited to three events. She won the 80-meter hurdles and the javelin throw. Shewas disqualified of winning the high jumpfor an offense that is legal today. She wasasked at the event if there was anythingshe did not play. “Yeah dolls” she said.She played her first round of golf at ageof sixteen. In 1947 she won theBritish Women’s Amateur Championshipbecoming the first woman to win theevent. In 1949 Babe, George, Patty Bergwho was a close golfing friend, WilsonSporting Goods and Fred Corcoran createdthe LPGA Tour.Babe developed colon cancer in 1953.Even though very ill her goal was to winthe U.S. Women’s Open, which she hadcaptured twice before. Members enjoyeda cookout with Jack Parker, RogerJohnson, and Bart Henkle at the grills. <strong>The</strong>ygrilled up hamburgers, brats and hot dogs.Ray Marcos volunteered to drive and get thebest corn in the state so we can have corn-on-the-cob. Ron Fleenor and Kathy McManusbrought baked beans. We also had potatosalad, iced tea and lemonade and womenbrought a dessert. Carole Mosbaugh andher committee continue to wow us eachmonth.New members and guests were introducedand welcomed by our members.Carole Mosbaugh shared plans for a golfevent on June 29 with an 8 am shot-gun atBaseline golf course with lunch at GatorJoe’s. Hour at Bonifay Country Club on FridayJune 14 at 5pm.Barbara Bonney shared plans for purchasinga brick to be placed in the VeteransMemorial Cemetery in the Villages inhonor of Bill Breadon’s service to hiscountry and his dedicated service to ourclub.John Ressler shared the plans for thescalloping trip out of Homosassa Springson Friday July 12. In addition he remindedmembers that everyone is invited to play inthe Monday Priority <strong>Golf</strong> event during thesummer months.Jack Parker and Marianne Rogers invitedmembers to join them for the verysuccessful nine and dine golf events onTuesdays and Fridays.Barbara Richardson reminded membersthe Thursday Priority <strong>Golf</strong> event isopen to everyone during the summermonths.Mona Rubenstein encouraged moremembers to participate in Executive <strong>Golf</strong>events. She reminded members of theplanned outing at the World <strong>Golf</strong> VillageAugust 16-18 with golf on two premiumcourses Slammer and Squire.Barbara Beyer encouraged members tosign-up for the Victory Casino cruise onJune 26 with a deadline for sign-up andpayment on June 15.<strong>The</strong> meeting was followed by shuffleboard and bocce until dark. It was obviousmany members were prepared for somestiff competition. I want totell you all... we had a BALL!!<strong>The</strong>re was a smaller groupthan usual and I think that’s partially whywe had so much fun! <strong>The</strong> fact that we


were rained out on Saturday... the mosteveryone played was 16 holes... somemade it all the way... didn’t dampen ourspirits a bit. We had lunch at a fantasticrestaurant then headed to the hotel. Afterall... free cocktail hour started at 5:30! Dinnerboth nights was really delicious andthe service was great, as usual.We never got to play on Sunday...the rainwas all around us...and we still had a greattime. <strong>The</strong> golf pro at Venetian Bay arrangedfor everyone to get a full refundand we will try to go back on a day tripvery soon. <strong>The</strong> Venetian Bay courselooked fantastic... and we all decided wewanted to play it when we could really enjoyit....not in the rain.Everyone then went to a great restaurantin Leesburg... can’t remember the namebut it used to be Dead River Vic’s and thefood was terrific! Watching the baby alligatorsin the inlet was fun....they are almostcute!Winners on Saturday were:Steve Burgfectal for low gross and LindaSeibel for low score in a Shamble format.<strong>The</strong> winners of the blind draw were SteveBurgfectal, Liz Taylor, Carol Ann Sextonand Jack Parker. Carl Wallin (Steve’s oldcollege buddy who was a guest), PhyllisGramke and Carole Mosbaugh won theputting contests... and... the big winner onthe night at the hotel for 2 and a round ofgolf for 2 at Venetian Bay was Carole Mosbaugh.Carole had a bunch of offers to joinher on the adventure. Based on what agood time we had... I look forward to most ofus being together again at the World <strong>Golf</strong>Village in St. Augustine in August. Get yourforms in early... I have a limit as to howmany can go!9 HOLE EXECUTIVE GOLFNot a lot to report except... if we don’t startgetting a better turn out for the 2nd and 4thFriday’s and 1st and 3rd Sunday’s they willbe cancelled. Thursdays are terrific... whata great bunch we have and we always go tolunch. Social & Upcoming MeetingsWe have had a fun Maywith several gatherings outsideof golf.We had a great group thatexperienced Wild Bill's AirBoat Ride on Sunday, May26 and it was a great way tospend a Memorial Day Sunday... Our dinnerat Fisherman's Restaurant was aunique place with excellent food.<strong>The</strong> cook out at our May meeting was ahuge success. Thanks to Jack Parker,Roger Johnson and Bart Henkle for doingan excellent job at the grills. It wasgreat to see everyone stay and play bocceand shuffleboard. Rematches will certainlybe in the future planning.Let's get ready to Dance at our regularmeeting on Tuesday, June 25th.
