Headmasters Advanced Academy Training is the most respected
hairdressing, beauty therapy and fashion design academy in
Melbourne. Centrally located in Collins Street, the heart of Melbourne’s
fashion precinct, Headmasters has a proud tradition of producing
talented hairdressers, beauty therapists, spa managers and fashion
designers who are all industry ready.
In 1997 Donna and Wayne Gannon accepted the challenge
to raise the standard of skills, training and service in the
Hairdressing and Beauty industry, successfully establishing a
benchmark training and learning institution – Headmasters
Academy.
Donna and Wayne are acknowledged as established leaders in
Hairdressing and Beauty, with over four decades of experience
and practice supporting their training and education
programs. They have owned and operated successful salons,
distributed products and represented the Hairdressing and
Beauty industry both nationally and internationally. Wayne is
a recipient of the prestigious Medal of Honour awarded by
La Confederation Internationale de La Coiffure, the highest
international Award in the Hairdressing industry.
With such professional standing, Headmasters was embraced
from the first student intake by apprentices and employers
alike. Headmasters is one of the largest private providers of
Hairdressing training in Australia. Many of Melbourne’s leading
salons rely on the skills and expertise of Headmasters to
develop the talent and potential of the future leading stylists
and beauty / day spa therapists.
Headmasters provides a fun and friendly environment with
professional facilitators and state-of-the-art facilities for
4
students to explore their new industry and complete their
training. Students are welcomed from all parts of the world
and mix with local students to learn the latest creative and
innovative techniques and graduate with leading edge skills.
International students now make up part of Headmasters
student body providing diversity in culture and community
and a global view of hairdressing and beauty. From afar afield
as England, France, Canada, China, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Japan,
Korea and India, students from 44 countries have come to
Headmasters as the premier training institute in Australia.
Headmasters has a strong international reputation with alumni
successfully employed and now running their own business in
many different countries.
A wise man once said, “it’s the journey not the destination
that’s important”. Headmasters philosophy recognises both
the value of endeavour and the end goal with students
graduating highly skilled as well as keen to keep testing their
own boundaries. Headmasters students have fun as they
make their own future. Leading salons, such as Rokk Ebony,
Shibui, Falcone Hairdressing, Hennesy Lane, Masci Hair &
Spa and Rakis, all send their apprentices to Headmasters
with certain knowledge of leading edge training and
Headmasters appealed to me over any other training
academy because of its excitement and passion for the
industry. I wanted to be taught and surrounded by people
who are obsessed about hair as I am!
Currently I am working with Rokk Ebony and really enjoy
An Introduction to
Hairdressing courses and careers
Hairdressing is a creative and exciting world. Career potential in
the hairdressing industry is boundless and limited only by you. As a
qualified hairdresser you have skills to make people beautiful and
make a positive change in your clients’ lives. You can choose to
become a stylist or colour technician, perhaps a technical advisor
or you can choose to own your own salon. Some Hairdressers have
also created their own signature product range and regularly work
with celebrity clients.
Many stylists simply enjoy their art and creativity, applying their
skills and experience and working behind the scenes on fashion
shoots and shows or even in television, film and stage. Combine
hairdressing with travel and visit fascinating places around the
world. Work on a cruise ship or an exotic hotel with glamorous
guests desperate for your skills and experience.
With experience, you may choose to share your passion and
knowledge and train other hairdressers in a college environment
or with a specialist product company, using your communication
expertise, to highlight and promote skills and techniques.
An introduction to
Beauty courses and careers
The beauty industry is constantly changing and evolving, with new
directions, techniques and products being introduced into the market
place at a vibrant pace. The excitement is illustrated well through
the number of salons and spas opening and they all need qualified
practitioners to make them successful. Job opportunities abound –
offering work variety and endless career possibilities.
As a Headmasters student you will be trained in an encouraging
and modern environment with part of your training conducted in
a commercial salon to make you job ready and totally familiar with
beauty therapist work.
Beauty therapy can provide many different pathways including
working in the rapidly growing spa industry, working as a technical
advisor or salon consultant for a product (make-up, skin care or
fragrance) company where you could mentor therapists, salon and
spa owners or become a successful salon owner with great personal
and financial rewards.
Beauty therapists are able to travel the world as Australian Beauty
therapists are highly sought after in Europe and the US and especially
on cruise ships where you can see the world for free and make money
at the same time!
Beauty therapists can work in film, stage and television and rub
shoulders with the stars or do makeup for photo shoots, catwalk and
weddings. Another career path in the Beauty therapy industry is to
become a trainer/facilitator in a Beauty academy and have the joy of
mentoring and developing the next generation of therapists.
An Introduction to
Fashion courses and careers
Imagine seeing your original work being worn by people you pass on the
street and in stores. Imagine getting paid to dress people and make them
feel good about themselves. Fashion designers don’t imagine – they just
do. A fashion designer is a creative yet still technical person who designs
clothing and apparel within a specific theme for a particular purpose or
market.
Fashion design is a career for the imaginative and creative and distinctive.
There are many fashion design career pathways to choose from including
creating new fashion through your own label or working with a well known
design house. Other career options include creative, technical or textile
designer or sketcher, cutter or patternmaker. A qualification in fashion
design will give you choice across many industries within studio, design,
manufacturing, retail and tailoring.
Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship provides an advantage in the job market; showing
employers a candidate has both practical experience, job ready skills, an
aptitude to learn and a recognised qualification.
Prospective apprentices are able to contact Headmasters and request a listing
of employers seeking apprentices. Other alternatives include looking at jobs
ads, searching through the national jobs database, registering at an Australian
Apprenticeships Centre or seeking advice from their school.
Once an employer has offered an apprenticeship, the apprentice and
the employer complete a signed training contract with an Australian
Apprenticeship Centre and nominated Registered Training Organisation, such
as Headmasters who can provide the necessary training qualification.
An Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) representative will visit the
workplace to complete the training contract with the employer and
apprentice. Contact the AAC on 13 38 73 or australianapprenticeships.gov.au
for more information.
VOcatiOnal educatiOn and tRaining in ScHOOlS
VET in Schools, a vocationally oriented program for Years 10, 11 and 12 VCE
or VCAL students, allows students to undertake training at Headmasters one
day a week while still studying. The program gives students an opportunity
to gain their VCAL/VCE as well as employment experience in the workplace.
On completion of the VETiS program students may be eligible to receive a
Certificate II in Hairdressing, Certificate II in Makeup Services or Cerificate II in
Applied Fashion Design and Technology.
School based apprentices, trained by Headmasters can work toward gaining
a Certificate III in Hairdressing, while studying VCAL/VCE. Students are
able to study at secondary school and pursue an ambition of becoming a
hairdresser with a nationally recognised qualification. The School Based
Australian Apprenticeship program sees students working part time in a salon
gaining valuable skills and work experience as well as attending Headmasters
Academy to attain further vocational training. Assessment is competency
based following training received. Talk to Headmasters or a school careers
adviser for more information.
eCognition oF
prior LeArning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is used to evaluate qualifications gained
from other formal studies or training. If you are granted RPL you may be able to
complete your course in a shorter amount of time.
HOW dO i aPPly?
1. The first step is to identify the modules or competency units in which
credit will be sought. Headmasters can help you with this process.
2. Next, evidence of prior learning or current competence needs to be
gathered. Types of evidence include:
o Samples of work
o Demonstration of knowledge or skills
o Statements from third parties
o Challenge tests for knowledge or skills
o Documents indicating knowledge or skills
o Interviews
3. You will need to align your evidence of knowledge and skills to the
module or competency unit. This can be done by you if you have
sufficient information or you can ask for assistance from Headmasters.
4. If your evidence appears to support your claim for credit, submit the RPL
application for assessment. A qualified assessor will make a judgment
based on the evidence.
5. Receive and review the result. If you are unsuccessful the assessor will
give an explanation to ensure that you are satisfied.
HOW mucH eVidence dO i need?
Assessors usually look for at least two types of evidence to support any RPL
claim. Physical evidence such as a demonstration of skill can’t be disputed and
will be seen as strongly supporting your application. In almost all cases the
credit being sought will involve both skill and knowledge so an interview or
knowledge test should be expected.
WHat aRe tHe aSSeSSORS lOOKing FOR?
The assessors can only give you credit if they judge that your skill and
knowledge is equal to, or greater than, the skill and knowledge required to
pass the module or achieve the competency unit. The assessor can only judge
you on the evidence you give them so that evidence must show the required
skill and knowledge.
WHat dOeS it cOSt?
RPL is charged on a fee for service basis. The fees for RPL may vary because
the assessments are different for each applicant and some take much more
time than others.
Headmasters will provide an estimate to applicants at the time of application.
cRedit tRanSFeR
Where you have completed the identical unit of competency at another
Registered Training Organisation, you can apply for a credit transfer rather
than RPL. Headmasters recognises qualifications and statements of attainment
from Australian Registered Training Providers.
Where RPL is granted, the course duration will be reduced accordingly.
Headmasters will advise DIAC of any reduced duration in international
students study duration.
International students who are under 18 years of age are required by their
student visa to maintain adequate arrangements for accommodation, support
and general welfare while in Australia.
There are three ways in which a student may satisfy this requirement:
• Live with a parent or legal guardian; or
• Live with a suitable relative nominated by your parent or legal guardian; or
• Agree to care arrangements for accommodation, support and general
welfare that have been approved Headmasters
For students who select Option 3, Headmasters will organise a Headmastersapproved
carer service to act as the student’s carer in Australia until they turn
18 years of age. The student will also be required to live with a Headmastersapproved
homestay host.
All students intending to enter Australia to study on a full-time basis must first
obtain a Student Visa (except for students from New Zealand). Details of Visa
applications and requirements are found in leaflets issued by the Department
of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) entitled ‘Student Entry to Australia’ and
‘Extension of stay in Australia as a Student’ or immi.gov.au.
It is a requirement of entry to Australia that students are covered by Overseas
Student Health Insurance. This can be arranged on the students’ behalf by
Headmasters or our agents.
DIAC issue Permission to Work Rights with your Student Visa. Students may
only work up to 20 hours per week (outside your course hours). If you decide
to work, you are to ensure that your studies are unaffected.
Each country has an Assessment Level for Student Visa Processing. Please
refer to the immigration website immi.gov.au to see what Visa Subclass and
Assessment Level your country is for the course you wish to study.
Headmasters offer a full range of Nationally Recognised hairdressing and
beauty courses from Certificate III courses to Advanced Diploma. These come
under the Vocational Education Training sector (VET) Visa sub-class 572.
All prospective students will have to demonstrate proficiency in English.
Students from Assessment Level 3 and 4 countries can apply for relevant
courses and must complete an IELTS test, achieving Level 5.5 not more
than 12 months before the day on which the application was made. Once
IELTS level 5.5 has been achieved students will then be able to enrol at
Headmasters.
Although it is not compulsory for students from Assessment Level 1 & 2
countries to sit an English Language Proficiency Test such as IELTS to qualify
for a Student Visa, it is a requirement of enrolment at Headmasters that
the student is able to demonstrate proficiency in English as all courses at
Headmasters are delivered in English.
Applicants who are not proficient in the English Language will need to enrol
in an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS).
Arrangements can be made to complete the ELICOS course with an ELICOS
provider. Students will be able to enrol directly into Headmasters upon
successful completion of an Upper Intermediate level at a chosen ELICOS
provider.
