WELCOME 

We have been serving the learning needs 

of our local community for the last 60 years. 

Formerly known as Stockton and Billingham 

College, but now as Stockton Riverside 

College, we celebrate our 10th birthday on 

20th December 2012 since relocating to 

Teesdale in 2002. 

We are very proud that over the last 10 years, 

more than 200,000 local people have 

benefitted from our high-quality learning, our 

guidance and teaching from our inspirational 

and caring staff and from an experience which 

has affected their lives in many different ways, 

whether this be uncovering hidden talents 

or reaching new horizons and taking a new 

direction in life. Many more have even enjoyed 

visiting our college for celebrations, shows and 

exhibitions, showing that we are here for all. 

I hope that the information in our prospectus 

encourages you to feel inspired to take

LIFE AS A STUDENT 

College is a big step from school. It’s great 

preparation for the rest of your life as you’re 

treated like an adult. Managing your time and 

studies is up to you but we are always there to 

help and support where needed. 

As one of our students, you will learn in a small, 

caring and friendly environment. We want to see 

you reach your full potential and get the most 

out of your time with us, we provide the support 

and direction you need together with lots of 

extras which makes your time here happy and 

fulfilling – giving you the best preparation for 

work or further learning. 

Some social highlights of the year are our 

Freshers’ events, our annual Student Festival 

and our Celebration Prom which give every 

one of our students the chance to meet new 

friends at the start of the year and unwind and 

celebrate at the end of the year. We also stage 

end-of-year shows and awards where students 

get the chance to display their work, perform or 

be rewarded for any outstanding achievements. 

These give students the chance to invite family 

and friends into the college. 

That’s not all! You will also be encouraged to 

take part in a wide range of activities which 

will look brilliant on your CV and help with job 

applications. For example, there are student 

trips which take place throughout the UK and 

Europe, there’s a volunteer and community 

programme, the chance to help with charity 

fundraisers, mini activity days and you could 

become a Student Ambassador or get involved 

with the Student Union. 

STUDENT SUPPORT 

We have a wide range of services to help you 

succeed. Our priority is to help you get settled 

into the college and onto your course and give 

you the support and guidance you need for this. 

We have a Wellbeing service, including youth 

workers and counsellors, who can help with 

everything from benefits and housing to 

emotional support or just be someone to talk to! 

We can help you manage your coursework and 

can also work with you to identify the best 

techniques and tactics to do this. We have 

students with a wide range of needs and we 

work with each to create individual support plans 

including particular exam arrangements, help 

with exam techniques, study skills, revision skills, 

organisation skills and much more. We offer 

support in and out of class as needed, including 

personal one-to-one support. We’re with you all 

the way! 

CAREERS AND FURTHER/HIGHER 

EDUCATION ADVICE AND GUIDANCE 

Our Careers Guidance staff will help you make 

those difficult decisions about where you want 

to be and what you dream of – whether you 

plan to go to university, are still undecided about 

your goals or you see yourself in a particular job. 

Please come and talk to us – there’s no 

obligation. We’re happy with giving you the best 

advice to set you on your way. We promise to 

remain unbiased!

CAFÉS AND REFECTORIES 

You won’t be short of good food at our college. 

There is a range of student cafés including 

the Riverside Refectory, the Oasis and the 

Waterfront snack bar. All dietary needs are 

catered for – and there are great meal deals 

available! You’re free to bring your own food 

in too and eat in our student area. 

SPORTS FACILITIES 

The SRC Sports Centre, with its fitness suite, 

top-quality outdoor astro turf and full indoor 

sports hall with climbing wall, is located at 

SRC Bede Sixth Form campus in Billingham 

and is available to our students to join at

THE AVIATION ACADEMY 

Aviation is a dynamic and exciting industry 

that will challenge you and allow you to 

experience something new every day. 

Our Aviation Academy provides you with the 

opportunity to develop excellent skills and 

knowledge required in this competitive industry. 

Industry-specialised tutors combine theory 

with practice, and you will have the chance to 

use our aircraft mock-up cabin and check-in 

area as well as our industry-specific resources 

and equipment. 

We have built strong relationships with industry 

organisations such as Teesside International 

Fire Training Centre, Thomas Cook Airlines, 

Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Emirates and 

Securicor among others. This allows you to 

take part in many off-site activities, such as 

fire fighting, slide evacuations, ditching drills, 

ground handling and conflict handing. Many 

of these training activities often come with 

industry-recognised certificates.

Our Youth Worker Service offers advice and

LEARNING SUPPORT 

Our Learning Support Team offers extensive 

support for students. Support is available during 

the day and evenings for all eligible students. 

It can be a one-to-one session or within a

DISABILITY SUPPORT 

We offer a superb range of specialist support 

for learners with learning difficulties and/or

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS (IMPROVING 

ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS AND ICT) 

All of our learners on full-time programmes 

will be given the opportunity to study skills in 

English, Mathematics and I.T. at the appropriate 

level as a mandatory part of their course. This 

is a big help to them when they reach the world 

of work, as employers really do need people 

who can manage well and have a good grasp 

of these areas. 

THE LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE 

A high-quality service based on an extensive 

variety of print and electronic resources and 

other learning materials with excellent I.T. 

facilities, all with internet access, is provided 

in our Learning Resource Centre (LRC). This 

all gives great support for both coursework 

and research.

CHILDREN/YOUNG PEOPLE BEING 

LOOKED AFTER BY THE LOCAL 

AUTHORITY (INCLUDING FOSTERING 

AND PRIVATE FOSTERING) 

We know that some young people may require 

additional guidance and support. We provide 

this via our named staff for young people who 

are looked after or who are leaving care during 

their time with us. We will check in with them 

regularly, and let them know that there is a staff 

member available to them at all times. We work 

with carers and foster parents to help make sure 

that these young people can use their time at 

college to develop their independence skills 

and prepare for further study, work or university.

The bustle of an airport filled with

their holidays disguises what is 

actually going on behind the scenes;

THE COURSE 

This course is designed to meet the 

needs of all students with learning 

difficulties and/or disabilities. It can be 

structured to meet individual student 

needs, giving the opportunity to 

participate in a range of activities to 

develop skills, possible progression 

into employment, improve qualification 

levels and increase independence 

though activities such as shopping, 

preparing a meal, food hygiene, using 

public transport and personal care. 

Students will improve or gain 

knowledge in literacy and numeracy 

skills with an opportunity to gain a 

qualification in Life Skills and 

undertake Enrichment activities 

(art and media, sport and leisure, 

ICT, practical skills).

are needed for entry to the course.

LAND-BASED SKILLS 

FOR WORKING LIFE – 

ENTRY LEVEL 2 AND 3 

THE COURSE 

Aimed at learners with learning 

difficulties and disabilities aged 16, this 

course has a strong practical element, 

with one day spent off-site visiting 

places such as pet stores, garden 

centres, community farms, veterinary 

practices and local parks, such as at - 

Woodland Park Nature Reserve where 

we do conservation-related activities and 

Stockton Borough Council where we 

have poly tunnels and an allotment area. 

We also manage a small flower bed 

within the college grounds and manage 

and maintain an allotment and 

conservation area at Nursery Lane, 

Stockton. The course provides an 

excellent grounding for anyone hoping 

to work or volunteer in the conservation, 

gardening or animal care sectors.

learn how to work with each other 

successfully and demonstrate their 

own abilities with the group 

• conservation – learners will work within 

the community to conserve and care

you to try out and learn new skills in 

a multi-skills workshop, especially 

designed to accommodate anything 

from joinery through to basic motor 

vehicle skills. All staff are skilled 

and friendly and will support you 

throughout your studies. These are 

full-time courses. 

You can study from the following:

• brickwork 

• painting and decorating 

• basic motor vehicle maintenance. 

Plus you will develop your skills with 

money, getting into work and health 

and safety.

THE COURSE 

Our award-winning Prince’s Trust Team 

programme offers you the opportunity 

to develop your personal skills and 

experience working as part of a team 

through challenges and projects within 

your local community whilst gaining 

nationally recognised qualifications. 

With outdoor activities, community 

projects and a work placement, this 

fast-paced and challenging course is a 

chance to enhance your life, build your 

confidence and acquire the support 

and motivation you need to progress 

to further education or employment 

whilst meeting new people and having 

lots of fun along the way. 

The programme runs for 12 weeks, 

including a five-day residential. 

It is free and you can claim existing 

benefits if eligible. Bus fares will also 

be reimbursed upon the receipt of 

valid bus tickets. 

This full-time personal development 

course will help you gain:

in employment and in life 

• belief in what you can achieve

“WE GOT INTO ‘STREET SWORD’, 

GOT OUR LEVEL 1 COACHING 

AWARD AND ENDED UP AT THE 

OLYMPIC STADIUM THROUGH OUR 

PRINCE’S TRUST PROGRAMME!” 

Ryan Morse (19) and Matthew Boggett 

(17), both from Middlesbrough, 

completed their Prince’s Trust 

programme and were picked to 

provide demonstrations and encourage 

Olympic visitors to take up sport at the 

London Pleasure Gardens at the 2012 

Olympic Games. 

Through their Prince’s Trust programme 

at Stockton Riverside College, they were 

involved in ‘Street Sword’, and trained 

in fencing, a completely new sport for 

them. Ryan completed a Level 1 

Coaching course and went on to help 

with the next new group on the Prince’s 

Trust programme. He aims to set up 

as a Street Sword fencing coach with 

help from the Prince’s Trust.

Officer selected the two young coaches: 

“Ryan and Matthew have been fantastic 

leaders in their communities, teaching 

fencing in a primary school and to 

adults with learning difficulties so were 

the obvious choice to go to the 

Olympics. I was so excited and proud 

to see them in London; it was such 

an endorsement of their work and the 

Street Sword programme.”
