Mayor’s welcome
southport pool complex
i’m delighted to extend to you an invitation to visit our beautiful city to
undertake training as part of your high performance sporting program.
Millions of visitors flock to Gold Coast City
each year to experience our world-famous
beaches and majestic World-Heritage listed
rainforests. Within this idyllic setting lies
the fastest growing city in Australia, with a
permanent population in excess of 500,000.
Our city has a long history as a centre for
sporting excellence, with a proud sporting
ethos and dynamic can-do attitude. Sporting
teams have access to natural resources
and purpose-built facilities to assist with
preparation for major competition. Pleasant
summers and warm winters make for an
environment fit for year-round training.
Excellent facilities, expert sports science capabilities
and dedicated sport-friendly accommodation
make training in our city effective and enjoyable.
As a former Olympic athlete, I understand the
requirements of elite athletes. That’s why our city
has created Sport Gold Coast. Designed to be
a one-stop shop for national and international
sporting teams, Sport Gold Coast can assist
squads with location enquiries, facilities, sports
science, accommodation and more.
We’re not just about sport though. Our city’s
strategic location and low-cost base also make it
a hot-spot for business growth. With a substantial
and fast growing business community, Gold Coast
City has moved past the role of a regional service
economy, to that of a globally focused exporter.
Driving our business sector is our Economic
Development Branch, BusinessGC. Funded by the
Gold Coast City Council, BusinessGC is responsible
for developing a sustainable Gold Coast City
economy through industry development initiatives
and investment attraction programs.
Gold Coast City’s relaxed lifestyle and diverse
attractions continue to make the region one of
Australia’s most popular and enduring tourism
destinations. We are committed to sharing our success
with you, so read on and find out a little more about
our great city and what we have to offer you.
Australia’s best
“The Gold Coast is our
number one Asia Pacific
training destination.”
Graeme Thompson – England Rugby
League World Cup Team Manager
gold coast city is widely acknowledged as one of the best sports
training locations in the world. fabulous weather, superb facilities,
sports science specialists and a welcoming local community combine to
make the region ideal for sports training.
Queensland and interstate sporting teams have enjoyed
the benefits of training on the Gold Coast for many years,
but the 2000 Sydney Olympics opened the doors for teams
from around the world. More than 1300 athletes from
15 countries trained in the city during the lead up to the
games. Since then a growing number of sporting teams
have flocked to the Gold Coast time and again.
World-class training venues are within minutes of two
international airports. As well as boasting Olympic-standard
swimming pools and athletics facilities, the Gold Coast also
offers incredible cross-training locations.
Sporting teams can make use of 55 kilometres of sandy
beaches with a 36-kilometre network of pathways. The
track, called the Gold Coast Oceanway, stretches from
the Gold Coast Seaway in the north, to the Point Danger
Lighthouse in the south. Alternatively, teams can head to
the Hinterland and train on several leafy rainforest tracks.
Great weather means sporting teams are able to train
outdoors more often. The region receives an average of
10 hours sunshine a day for approximately 300 days a year.
