Evening Event: Women in the DirtIn the evening, the Chapter hosted a stellarevening of inspiration, reflection, networking, andcelebration at the Bijou Theater, just a block awayfrom Baldwin Plaza. Bridgeport Mayor Finch,introduced by ASLA president-elect Tom Tavella,FASLA, spoke passionately about Olmsted andthe role that <strong>landscape</strong> architects play in creatingvibrant spaces that make cities exciting and sustainableplaces to live and do business.The 75 or so attendees then enjoyed a screeningof the documentary “Women In The Dirt,”highlighting the careers and accomplishmentsof seven visionary female <strong>landscape</strong> architectsfrom California. A panel discussion followed,with participants reflecting on the influencesthat steered them toward a career in <strong>landscape</strong><strong>architecture</strong>, the choices that led them to become<strong>Connecticut</strong> practitioners, and the challenges andjoys of the profession in today’s world. The paneldiscussion was followed by a cocktail party andbirthday cake for Frederick (Olmsted, that is).“ Mayor Finchspoke passionatelyabout Olmsted and therole that <strong>landscape</strong> architectsplay in creating vibrant spacesthat make cities exciting andsustainable places to live anddo business.“16
