Downtown MansfieldMansfield, home of Connecticut’s flagshipUConn campus, has long awaited the realizationof a new town center to bring a sense ofcivic identity, promote sustainable growth, andpreserve the rural, historic character of the community.UConn landscape architecture facultyhave contributed their expertise to the visionfor Storrs Center, which finally broke groundin summer of 2011, through various planningand design efforts over the years. Most recently,Professor Kristin Schwab led a study of thedowntown district’s green infrastructure andpublic spaces. Conducted over the summer andfall of 2011 with undergraduate landscape architectureinterns Roger Engle and Devon Lagasse,the study maps the existing preserved open spaceand trails which surround the campus and towncenter area at a variety of scales. It also lays thegroundwork for a new system of public spacesand linkages within the high-density, mixed-usedevelopment and adjacent municipal complex.44
