Downtown MansfieldMansfield, home of <strong>Connecticut</strong>’s flagshipUConn campus, has long awaited the realizationof a new town center to bring a sense ofcivic identity, promote sustainable growth, andpreserve the rural, historic character of the community.UConn <strong>landscape</strong> <strong>architecture</strong> facultyhave contributed their expertise to the visionfor Storrs Center, which finally broke groundin summer of 2011, through various planningand design efforts over the years. Most recently,Professor Kristin Schwab led a study of thedowntown district’s green infrastructure andpublic spaces. Conducted over the summer andfall of 2011 with undergraduate <strong>landscape</strong> <strong>architecture</strong>interns Roger Engle and Devon Lagasse,the study maps the existing preserved open spaceand trails which surround the campus and towncenter area at a variety of scales. It also lays thegroundwork for a new system of public spacesand linkages within the high-density, mixed-usedevelopment and adjacent municipal complex.44
