The accomplishments of our student body certainly bear witness to ourcommitment to that ideal. While the banner is twenty years old, the tradition of excellence as a habit hasbeen at the forefront of student life since the Brothers of the Sacred Heart founded the school fifty oneyears ago. Today, the Brothers, faculty and staff carry the expectation of excellence in the classroom, onthe fields and throughout the halls of St. Joseph High School. In January 2013, the St. Joseph High School community celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the school’sfounding in 1961 with a special event at the Imperia in Somerset. The event, originally scheduled for Novemberof 2012, but postponed because of SuperStorm Sandy, was a communal celebration of the school’ssuccess. Graduates, current and alumni parents, former coaches, Brothers and friends gathered to reflectwith gratitude on the past 50 years and look forward with excitement tothe next 50.This issue of TODAY provides snapshots of our history and will rekindlememories in our alumni, no matter the decade of graduation. Our history is richbecause of the foundation provided by the Charism of the Brothers of the SacredHeart. Our teachers taught us values and helped us become men. Whether wegraduated in the 1960’s or the 2010’s, or anywhere in between, the Charism hasbeen the unifying and motivating element of our school community. It has madeus a unique force academically, athletically and spiritually.“We are St. Joe’s” because of the cumulative efforts of generations ofBrothers, teachers, students and parents working together to provide opportunitiesfor learning. Today, 100% of our graduating seniors are accepted into collegewith over 80% receiving a significant college scholarship. In the past 5 years, our seniors have received over $120 million in scholarships. Our athletic andacademic teams are consistent county champions, and frequently in the hunt forstate championships (and the tradition of a holiday for a state championship stillexists - thank you Basketball and College Bowl). The Brothers’ Charism affords us various opportunities toput faith into action. Recently, our students shaved their heads and raised over $30,000 for St. Baldrick’s,a foundation that raises funds for pediatric cancer research. Discovering and nurturing diverse interests andabilities are essential to the educational process. Many alumni still reminisce about the extracurricular activitiesthat had a profound impact on their development and still hold a prominent place in their memories.I hope that as you read this issue of TODAY, you join us in celebrating fifty years of incredible growth, success and opportunity.I would be remiss if I did not thank the committee who helped plan and carry out our recent year ofcelebration for our 50th Anniversary. While too large to name individually, the group did yeoman’s workand met regularly for over two years. The school owes them much thanks. As always, special thanks go toour parents clubs, which serve the entire school community and offer critical support to the schooland our projects. Thanks to our many friends and supporters who have already contributed to the school’s Annual FundCampaign. We continue to experience a resurgence of alumni participation and philanthropic support. Extraordinarygifts have been made to the school allowing us to further the mission, while building a foundationfor another 50 years of service. These gifts have been contributed to the school with the understandingthat they further the education of our young men today and tomorrow. The goal for our Annual Fund andGolf Tournament this year is $275,000. These funds directly support scholarships, financial aid, technologyupgrades, curriculum enhancement and other needs not covered by tuition.
