LEGOLAND ® iN shOrt
CONCEpt
LEGOLAND ® Billund is a LEGO ® world for children between 2-12 years of age, and their families. LEGOLAND offers
joint experiences and activities for the entire family – centred around the child. Children can explore a world built
out of more than 59 million LEGO bricks. A world of fun, fantasy, creativity and learning.
histOrY
The history of LEGOLAND began to take shape in the 1960s. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, the then owner of the
LEGO Corporation, arranged an exhibition of LEGO figures in his factories. People showed such a great interest in
the exhibition that Godtfred Kirk Christiansen began to toy with the idea of making an outdoor LEGO exhibition. In
the beginning he just imagined a small garden display of the different LEGO models. But, after putting the idea
forward, it developed into something much more substantial.
On 7 June 1968 LEGOLAND in Billund opened its doors for the public for the first time. 38,000 m 2 of houses,
landscapes, moving trains, floating boats and working cranes – all built with ordinary LEGO bricks. In addition to a
Miniland built entirely with LEGO bricks, the new park sported a big LEGO train, a Toyota Traffic School, an Indian
camp, a puppet theatre and a doll collection.
LEGOLAND became a success beyond all expectations. In its first year, the park welcomed some 625,000 happy
visitors, and it soon became the most popular tourist attraction outside of Copenhagen - A position that LEGO-
LAND still holds.
OWNErship
The LEGOLAND parks were founded in 1968 by the Kirk Kristiansen family who retained ownership until 2005.
Since 2005, the LEGOLAND parks have been part of the European family-entertainment enterprise Merlin
Entertainments Group, which owns and operates the following brand icons: the four LEGOLAND parks, three
LEGOLAND Discovery Centres, 9 Madame Tussauds, 23 SEA LIFE TM Centres, The Merlin Entertainments London
Eye, 2 Earth Explorers, 5 Dungeons, Underwater Adventures Aquarium, Gardaland, Alton Towers, Thorpe Park,
Chessington, Warwick Castle and Heide Park
Merlin Entertainments Group is owned by the Blackstone Group, Dubai International Capital and LEGO
Holding/KIRKBI.
Merlin Entertainments Group hosts more than 38 million guests a year at their 58 theme parks and six hotels,
making Merlin Entertainments the largest European company in the industry. The company owns the three
largest theme park brands in Europe: Tussauds, SEA LIFE and LEGOLAND, and is the second-largest theme park
owner in the world.
Work is currently in progress to open two new LEGOLAND parks: One in Iskandar, Florida in 2011, one in Malaysia in
2012, and one in Dubai later.
LEGOLAND ® BiLLUND rEsOrt
LEGOLAND, Lalandia, Givskud Zoo and Billund Airport are now working together to create Northern Europe’s
largest family resort. Collaboration between the companies will primarily involve joint marketing in Denmark and
abroad, as well as product development focusing on the launching of a weather-independent, year-round destination.
LEGOLAND Billund Resort is thus a formalisation of the ongoing efforts to make Billund an attractive destination,
and to get families to remain in the area for several days.
Pirate Land is home to Captain Roger and his band of wild pirates. They are always ready for a quick sword fight with
gutsy children and are more than happy to sail you to their secret cave. The boat trip takes you past ship-wrecked
pirates, dangerous crocodiles and sharks. In the pirate cave you will see exciting scenes from the life of the pirates,
where they party and fight over stolen treasures – all built with hundreds of peaceful LEGO ® bricks. The Pirate carousel
whisks you round in 9 large pirate barrels and in the Lighthouse you pull yourself up into the 11-meter high tower and
meet the LEGO Lighthouse master. From there, you can enjoy a fantastic view over the entire Pirate Land and Pirate
Lagoon, right next to Pirate Wave Breaker, where brave landlubbers are invited to join an adventurous pirate expedition.
Pirate Land expanded in 2008 with a totally new dimension: Pirate Lagoon with outdoor water fun for the entire family. In
Pirate Lagoon, families can go on expeditions in Pirate Splash Battle where they meet enjoyable challenges and engage
in sea battles with passing pirate ships. Children can also romp to their heart’s content in Pirate Water Falls, an amazing
water playground offering a wealth of exciting activities and interactive challenges for anyone of any age who loves water.
FACts aboUt PiRatE lagoon
• The Pirate Lagoon is 8000 m 2 in size. It is situated in Pirate Land, replacing Pirate Lake and Pirate Scene
• Construction of the new attraction took seven months
• The 47 large trees and 250 bushes formerly in the area was replanted elsewhere in the park
• Building Pirate Lagoon required 2520 tons of concrete
• Water in Pirate Lagoon is treated in the same manner as swimming pool water, and 468,000 litres of water are filtered
per hour. There are five large sand filters, each of which is 2.5 metres tall and 1.4 metres in diameter
• There are 2 kilometres of pipes under the Pirate Lagoon complex, which supply the area with purified water
• A total of 119 LEGO ® pirate models ensure that Pirate Lagoon has just the right atmosphere
• DDK 45 million have been invested in the new complex
In this thoroughly enjoyable family activity, parents and children sail on a challenging and fun-filled Pirate Voyage. There
is room for eight brave pirates in each of the colourful Pirate Ships. When everyone is stationed at their own water
cannon, the ship casts off and departs on an adventurous voyage among stern LEGO pirates and screaming parrots,
past shipwrecks and the mysterious treasure island. It is important to be on the alert with the water cannon at all times,
because there are challenges lurking everywhere. The cannons are operated by turning a handle, and well-aimed shots
are rewarded! Striking a target with a jet of water will release surprising, amusing and – occasionally – wet rewards.
It is necessary for the whole family to be on guard during the entire 5-minute voyage, as the Pirate Ship will be attacked
when one least expects it. There are also other pirate ships at sea, and when they sail past there are fierce sea battles.
From the shore, landlubbers attack the passing pirate ships with jets of water.
Open from 30 april to 29 August, this attraction is an exciting and challenging playground paradise for all children
who love water. If children wish to change to swimwear, there are newly-built changing rooms for their convenience.
After changing they can play freely on the large, non-slip blue surface that covers the entire area.
Pirate Water Falls is a refreshing oasis with foaming waterfalls and a wide variety of interactive play activities.
Steps lead upwards to two impressively large LEGO ® Pirate Ships that are designed for children to explore. To
descend to ground level again, the children can use one of the six slides.
An eight-metre horizontal water slide is waiting in the play area. A running start ensures a high-speed trip along
the wet slide standing up, on your tummy, or on your back.
A refreshing and delightfully thrilling splash of water is also on hand. In the Pirate Water Falls area there are four
pirate barrels brimming full with 50 or 100 litres of water. The barrels tip at regular intervals, splashing their contents
onto the playing children.
The fifth pirate barrel is the largest. It hangs on the Pirate Bridge and contains 1000 litres of water. Really brave
kids can play under it and, when they are least prepared, the pirate barrel splashes its contents onto the expectantly
waiting children.
Miniland is the heart of LEGOLAND ® – this is where it all began in 1968. Miniland has it all: famous buildings,
capitals, small cities and exciting places from the real world, in a scale of 1:20 to 1:40. The whole thing has been
built with more than 20 million LEGO ® bricks and created by the LEGOLAND park model designers. Many areas
are interactive, allowing visitors to decide what happens in the LEGO world with the twist of a joystick or at the
press of a button.
Miniland is always buzzing with activity: cars driving along the small roads, trains moving through the landscape
and boats sailing along the channels. Miniland has its very own airport, inspired by the Billund Airport. The Airport
is filled with a happy holiday feeling, with the small LEGO planes taxiing to and from the runway, and the terminals
filled with excited LEGO passengers, hurrying along with their suitcases. As a guest in Miniland you have an
excellent overview and feel like Gulliver in Lilliput.
When darkness falls, the lights come on in Miniland. There are lights in the little houses, the LEGO trains roll along
with lit carriages and the miniature cars turn on their headlights. “Miniland after dark” is a magic sight!
The Toyota Traffic School is one of the most popular activities in LEGOLAND for children between the ages of 7 –
13 years. The children get a brief introduction of the traffic rules. They then get into their own electrical car, so they
can test their skills in traffic and get their drivers license.
In 2005 a petrol station opened in LEGOLAND. At the Toyota Traffic School, young drives can drive in and
“fill-up” their cars at one of the four petrol stands. The children can also swing into the carwash and wash their
car, if it gets dusty. When they approach, a red and green light will indicate when they can enter. The brushes do
their job with a fine drizzle, and the wash ends with a blow of hot air to dry off the car. And then it’s back out into
the traffic. Young drivers can email a copy of their new driving diploma to their own address free of charge from
More than 44 million children and adults have visited LEGOLAND ® Billund since it opened in 1968.
When LEGOLAND opened in 1968, the park covered an area of 38,000 m 2 . Today LEGOLAND covers
an area of 140,000 m 2 .
59 million! That’s how many LEGO ® bricks have been used to build LEGOLAND Billund. If you line up
all those bricks, they would stretch 1,476 km, and reach from Billund in Denmark to Verona in Italy.
The largest LEGO model in LEGOLAND is Mount Rushmore with the four American Presidents. The
model is built with a total of 1.5 million LEGO bricks and 40,000 DUPLO bricks.
The smallest LEGO model is the dove in Miniland, which was build with four small, white LEGO bricks.
The King’s castle cost DKK 45 million to build. Decorating the Castle required 160 tonnes of crushed
granite and 150 tonnes of granite boulders. The King’s castle is the largest single investment in the
park. It was built in only eight months, which makes it the fastest built castle in Denmark.
In the autumn, some 80,000 spring flowering bulbs are planted in LEGOLAND. That results in colourful
flowers from early spring, before the spring leaves sprinkle their green over the park.
There are four LEGOLAND parks in the world: LEGOLAND Windsor in England, LEGOLAND California
near San Diego in the USA, LEGOLAND Deutschland in Southern Germany and LEGOLAND Billund.
You would have to put about 40,000,000,000 (40 billion) LEGO bricks on top of one another in order to
reach the Moon.
On average, every person on Earth has 52 LEGO bricks.
Seven LEGO boxes are sold every second.
Six plain coloured, eight knob bricks can be combined in 915,103,765 ways.
