[ 17 ]U.S. Senator Daniel Inouyeof Hawai‘i meets withOkinawa students at theinaugural ceremony for theObuchi Education andResearch Program, initiatedby the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong> toprovide graduatescholarships, internshipsand exchanges ofresearchers.Asian StudiesDevelopmentProgram (ASDP)Highlights of the ASDP year included the national conference on“Contemporary Issues in China,” hosted by the College of DuPage in GlenEllyn, Illinois; a workshop on “Interpreting China: Tradition & ContemporaryChallenges,” held at the University of North Carolina at Asheville; and aworkshop on India, hosted by Middlesex Community College in Bedford,Massachusetts, all with funding from the Henry Luce Foundation.ASDP is a joint program of the University of Hawai‘i and the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong><strong>Center</strong>, initiated in 1990 to increase American understanding of the Asia Pacificregion through college and university faculty development.The ASDP summer program was long and intense, starting with a threeweekfield study on the Pearl River Delta, held in Hong Kong and GuangdongProvince, and then followed by an NEH-funded five-week institute on Chinesepolitics and religion, a new three-week course that brings Chinese and Americanfaculty together in the U.S. and China in alternate years, and the annual threeweekInstitute on Infusing Asian Studies into the Undergraduate Curriculum.The latter programs were funded by The Henry Luce Foundation.In an era of increasing interdependence and globalization, it is crucial thatAmericans understand the cultures and histories as well as contemporary socialissues of Asia. The ASDP mission is to infuse Asian content and perspectivesinto the core curriculum at American two- and four-year colleges anduniversities through programs that help faculty expand and refine theirknowledge and teaching of Asia.
