[ 37 ]■ The U.S. Department of Energy awarded a cooperative agreement with a$450,000 ceiling for study of critical issues in Asia, the Pacific and the UnitedStates. Issues include the growing dependence of Asian economies on oil and gasfrom other regions, particularly the Middle <strong>East</strong>; the role of key energy playersin the region: China, India, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia; and theemergence of natural gas as the most rapidly growing source of energy in theworld today.■ The William & Flora Hewlett Foundation granted $500,000 for generalsupport for population and health studies.■ The David & Lucille Packard Foundation granted $200,000 forcommunications support for the Asia/Pacific Alliance.■ The National Endowment for the Humanities provided $230,000 for“Cultures of Authority in Asian Practice,” a seminar series for undergraduateeducators, and $171,649 for a project on “Empowering Relationships: Ways ofAuthority in Japanese Culture.■ The United States-Japan Foundation granted $99,546 for the Japan-UnitedStates Journalist Exchange Program.■ The <strong>Center</strong> for Global Partnership provided a grant of $82,280 for theCivil Society and Political Change in Asia project.■ Family Health International gave $43,214 for HIV/AIDS study inCambodia.(For a complete list of donors, see page 47.)Minoru Shibuya (right),Consul General of Japan inHawai‘i, presents Japan’scontribution to Leo Falcam,Federated States ofMicronesia President andchair of the StandingCommittee of the PacificIslands Conference, forsupport of the EWC PacificIslands DevelopmentProgram.
