[ 27 ]Visitors to the <strong>Center</strong>included Prince Norihitoand Princess HisakiTakamado of Japan, whowere welcomed by EWCPresident Charles E.Morrison.CommunityOutreachBriefingsThe <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong> works collaboratively with local organizations to bringtopics and international issues to the Hawai‘i community in public forums.Cosponsoring organizations include the University of Hawai‘i, Pacific and AsianAffairs Council, Honolulu Community Media Council, Japan-America Societyof Hawai‘i, Society of Professional Journalists, various Chambers of Commerce,and the Hawai‘i State Department of Business, Economic Development andTourism, among others. To extend the discussion of major issues facing theregion, the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong> publishes and disseminates a series of speeches byprominent researchers, analysts and policymakers.The Friends of the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong>, a non-profit volunteer organization,provides strong community support to the <strong>Center</strong>. The Friends coordinate ahost family program for <strong>Center</strong> students; administer the Mary Morgan HewettJournalism Endowment; give tours of the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong> grounds; providevolunteer assistance for special EWC events; and sponsor a popular lecture seriesfor the Hawai‘i community on topics of regional concern ranging from politicsand security to social and cultural issues. The Friends also support the <strong>Center</strong>’snew Asia Pacific Leadership Program’s mentoring program by matching studentswith professionals in the community. Contributors to the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong>Foundation of $100 or more receive membership in the Friends.The <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong> provides analysis of regional issues to government officials,diplomats, journalists, military officers and the general public through briefings andindividual meetings with <strong>Center</strong> researchers and professional staff. Last year the<strong>Center</strong> conducted briefings for Hawai‘i state legislators, journalists from Hawai‘i,U.S. mainland and the region, and U.S. and foreign government officials. In <strong>2001</strong>more than 300 official visitors received briefings at the <strong>East</strong>-<strong>West</strong> <strong>Center</strong>.
