Golf Tip“All Golfers Try To DoWhat They Believe is Correct”Ibelieve the abovestatement to be true.In all the decades thatI have been teaching golf Ihave never come across aplayer who was trying toswing “incorrectly”. Allgolfers are trying to do whatthey believe to be correct. Why then do 99% of the golferswho play the game fail to attain consistentquality shots? I believe thatthey have been taught to approachlearning the game from a flawed perspective.Anyone is capable of playing elegantgolf (ANYONE)! The game isjust not that hard. This season I have the privilegeof writing a series of instructional articlesfor Carolina Golf Journal.Through these articles I hope to beable to change your paradigm aboutball striking and indeed golf in general. The first point that we have toaddress is the concept that you hit agolf ball with a golf swing. The factof the matter is that you hit a golf ballwith a golf club. The idea that there is a golfswing, and that if one were to learnto make a perfect swing they wouldhit perfect shots, is the biggest impedimentto playing golf well.Last year while working on thepractice tee at the Quail HollowChampionship I overheard a noted instructortell a first year player thattheir swing was an “8.5”.Mind you, this player had wonan event already on the EuropeanTour and had won a US Amateurchampionship. The implication of“8.5” is that 10 is possible and all thisplayer had to do was follow this instructor’slead to get there. That is just so wrong on so manylevels. First of all no one has ever hitall perfect shots. Second, when welook at the best players we do not seeperfect swings (Furyk, Trevino, JBHolmes, Nicklaus and Ochoa cometo mind). As I stated above, golf is reallynot all that hard. However, it is verycounter intuitive. It is rather easy todo what one needs to do with theclub to produce quality shots. Theproblem is that you have to think thatwhat you are supposed to do is agood idea. The most important thing I wantto accomplish with these articles isfor you to understand what is“causative” in hitting good golfshots. We will allow you to understandthat just because something occurs (aparticular plane or path for example)does not make it a cause.Allen AvakianIn golf, unfortunately, so much ofwhat is just a correlation when someoneswings a golf club is givencausative status. This is a key point. How many of your friends havebreathlessly informed you that theyhave found “the way” to hit goodshots? Then the next time you seethem they have fallen back to inconsistentplay. The problem is that they reallydid not “know” or “own” a processfor hitting quality shots, they had justsensed something or tried a tip andhad enjoyed a good spell of ballstriking and had assigned causativestatus. So please, become a regularreader of Carolina Golf Journal andlearn the four things anyone need doto become an elegant player.Allen Avakian is the Director ofLearning Development ImpactPerformance Golf LearningCenter located at Charles T.Myers Golf Club.
