Memorable MomentsAces by the Hand Fullfor Carol<strong>in</strong>a Lakes Duo By: Sam SmithF<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g two amateur playersthat play golf at the same clubwith a comb<strong>in</strong>ed total of 15hole-<strong>in</strong>-ones may be possible, howeverright now Carol<strong>in</strong>a Lakes <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>in</strong>Indian Trail, SC has the hot duo at themoment.Joyce Ruppenthal and Bob Fraashave been “hot”, scor<strong>in</strong>g 4 aces together<strong>in</strong> the last 4 months….with Fraas mak<strong>in</strong>gthe last of his 3 hole-<strong>in</strong>-ones <strong>in</strong> that periodlast month at Red Bridge <strong>Golf</strong> <strong>Club</strong><strong>in</strong> Locust, <strong>NC</strong>. The #1 hole at RedBridge is a 133-yard par-3; Fraas us<strong>in</strong>gan 8-iron on the first shot of the day collectedhis 7th career ace. Not bad for thefirst sw<strong>in</strong>g of the day!Fraas, the retired Director of ForensicScience Program at eastern KentuckyUniversity <strong>in</strong> Richmond, KY, admits thatBob Fraas enjoys a handful ofhole-<strong>in</strong>-ones, the last 3 com<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ceDecember 2009.his short irons are not the strength of hisgame, but that his move to South Carol<strong>in</strong>ahas changed that somewhat.“Gett<strong>in</strong>g to play at least 3-4 times aweek has given me more confidence <strong>in</strong>all of my clubs, and now I stand up topar-3’s know<strong>in</strong>g I can make a goodshot,” said Fraas. “In addition to play<strong>in</strong>g,I get to practice quite often now thatthe weather has improved, and hope toget back to my 6-handicap I enjoyed lastyear at Carol<strong>in</strong>a Lakes.”Two of Fraas’ hole-<strong>in</strong>-oneshave com<strong>in</strong>g at Carol<strong>in</strong>a Lakes, <strong>in</strong>December he used 8-iron shot onthe 141-yard 4th hole, and followedthat with a 6-iron beauty <strong>in</strong> Januarythat flew right <strong>in</strong>to the 158-yard16th hole.With his improv<strong>in</strong>g game,Fraas will compete <strong>in</strong> his 4th WorldHandicap Championship at MyrtleBeach this summer, where he hasenjoyed top-10 f<strong>in</strong>ishes <strong>in</strong> 2 of the3 pervious appearances.Joyce Ruppenthal, who with abeautiful smile says she is hold<strong>in</strong>g atage 69, got her 8th career hole-<strong>in</strong>oneat Carol<strong>in</strong>a Lakes <strong>in</strong> late Decemberafter be<strong>in</strong>g persuaded to play <strong>in</strong>the regular ladies scheduled “TuesdayTootsies”.“I had just said goodbye to somefamily members that had spent theholidays with us, and wanted to justrelax,” she said. “My friends wouldnot take ‘no’ for an answer so Iconsented to play, and what a rewardI got for the effort of gett<strong>in</strong>g out on acold day.”Ruppenthal used her trusty 11-woodto ace the 119-yard 16th hole, com<strong>in</strong>g31-years after her first hole-<strong>in</strong>-one <strong>in</strong>1978 at the Bad<strong>in</strong> Country <strong>Club</strong>, nowknown as the Bad<strong>in</strong> Inn <strong>Golf</strong> Resortnear Albemarle, <strong>NC</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1978. <strong>Play</strong><strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> a Central Carol<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Golf</strong> Associationevent, one of many tournaments she enteredafter jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the Carol<strong>in</strong>a <strong>Golf</strong><strong>Club</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1972, Joyce vividly remembersher reaction.“ The tee was elevated and the otherplay<strong>in</strong>g partners were stand<strong>in</strong>g justbelow me when the ball hit the deepgreen and started to roll right at thehole”, she said with excitement build<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> her voice. “When the ball dropped, Ilet out a scream and started jump<strong>in</strong>g upand down startl<strong>in</strong>g my four-some below,they all thought I had been bitten by asnake or someth<strong>in</strong>g”.Joyce Ruppenthal and her lov<strong>in</strong>g 11-wood thatgot her an 8th career hole-<strong>in</strong>-one.Ruppenthal has had only one of her8 hole-<strong>in</strong>-one at Carol<strong>in</strong>a Lakes, her lastone on that cold December day <strong>in</strong> 2009.Three the HIO’s came when she and herhusband Fred lived at The Villages <strong>in</strong>Florida, and two others came at the Carol<strong>in</strong>a<strong>Golf</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Charlotte</strong>, and onemore over water at the Surf <strong>Club</strong> <strong>in</strong> MyrtleBeach.Gett<strong>in</strong>g to play 3-4 times a weekeach week, Ruppenthal should be a candidatefor some other memorable momentsthat will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to write quite astory of her love affair with the game ofgolf….and oh yes…. her trusty 11-wood.If there has been a MemorableMoment for you on the <strong>Golf</strong>Course, send your story andcontact <strong>in</strong>formation to Sam Smithat sam@carol<strong>in</strong>agolfjournal.com___________________________________________________________________________ __CAROLINA GOLF JOURNAL - SPRING 2010 – 27
