Amatuer Championship3rd USGA AmateurChampionship <strong>in</strong> <strong>Charlotte</strong> By: Sam Smith / RT McLaughl<strong>in</strong>When the <strong>Charlotte</strong> Country<strong>Club</strong> hosts the 2010 U.S.Women’s Amateur championship<strong>in</strong> August, it will mark the thirdtime <strong>in</strong> club history to host a USGA AmateurChampionship. Previously, theclub has hosted the 1972 U.S. Amateur(won by V<strong>in</strong>ny Giles) and the 2000USGA Senior Amateur (won by BillShean). The Women’s Amateur will bemak<strong>in</strong>g its fifth appearance <strong>in</strong> North Carol<strong>in</strong>a,the last be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1999 at BiltmoreForest <strong>in</strong> Asheville.“We are quite excited by the opportunityto host our third USGA championship,”said Doug Buchanan,co-general chairman. “Our membershipspeaks fondly of our prior events and the2010 Women’s Amateur will allow ouryounger members to enjoy the same personalassociation with a USGA championship.”<strong>Charlotte</strong> Country <strong>Club</strong>, designed byDonald Ross and opened <strong>in</strong> 1910, has astoried golf history, especially as it relatesto amateur golf. In addition toUSGA championships, the club hashosted many Carol<strong>in</strong>as <strong>Golf</strong> Associationchampionships and several SouthernAmateur Championships.The 2009 US Women’s AmateurChampionship was contested at OldWarson Country <strong>Club</strong> <strong>in</strong> St. Louis, Mo.,where University of Southern Californiafreshman Jennifer Song showed hermatch-play skills to become only thesecond women <strong>in</strong> history to w<strong>in</strong> twoUSGA Championships <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle year.Ms. Song also won the 2009 USGA USWomen’s Public L<strong>in</strong>ks event.A native of Seoul, South Korea,Song has played as an <strong>in</strong>vited amateur <strong>in</strong>two LPGA tournaments, with her bestf<strong>in</strong>ish tied for 13 th <strong>in</strong> the US Women’sOpen.
