Pastor’s PageChurch BudgetThis is the last Sabbath of our fiscal year. As usual, as we come to a momentlike this, I am grateful both to God and to the faithful members and friends of ourchurch. We pastors have talked with you in recent weeks about the challengesthat our church budget has faced. You have responded, as you always do, bysolid, consistent giving.Today provides a final opportunity to end the fiscal year in a strong way. CouldI urge you to remember that as you give today?Building FundA second financial matter has to do with our building fund commitment. Asyou may have noticed in the bulletin, the amount we need in order to finish thisphase of our project is $1,687,617. I am very eager to complete this phase andmove on to the next one! Once again, your faithful giving moves us ever closerto that goal.As in years past, with the coming of late summer and fall, we will turn our attentionto a strong push through the end of the year. Let’s make it a goal to completethe project in 2007! What will you do to help make that a reality?“Sex and Violence (Biblically Speaking)”Maybe a word is in order about today’s sermon. Let me begin by recognizingthe fact that we preachers tend to gravitate toward our favorite texts. For reasonsthat are certainly defensible, we often preach from the New Testament, and often choose those passages that will not collide with our contemporaryworld. We do so, however, to our detriment. We miss large sections of Scripturethat, while sometimes challenging, may open up vistas to us of how Godworks in the context of a particular time and place. We turn to one such text today. As I will note in the sermon, it is arguably themost challenging (and awful) story in the Bible. It is one that leaves the readergasping, “What does that mean? Why in the world is that included in Scripture?”Hopefully, by the end of our time together today, we can at least begin to answerthat question. Maybe we will see that there is a connection between thisstory and our time.God’s blessings on you throughout the summer!Randy RobertsSenior Pastor
