Caring for Families of the Fallen
In 2003, AER saw the need to provide lifetime benefits counseling for surviving Family
Members of Soldiers who died on active duty.
We found that the best way to provide this service was to partner with The Armed Forces
Service Corporation and the Army, Air Force Mutual Aid Association. Both companies
have extensive experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Social Security
Administration and the Department of Defense .
In 2011, AER provided 211 surviving spouses with memberships for lifetime benefits
counseling at a cost of $220,900. Since the program’s inception AER has provided 2,788
lifetime counseling memberships at a total cost of $2.3 million.
The Department of Defense assumed responsibility for this program in November 2011.
