Scholarships<br />
In <strong>2011</strong>, <strong>Army</strong> <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Relief</strong> awarded 3,181 scholarships, totaling $6.2 million to dependent children.<br />
The MG James Ursano Scholarship Program provides up to four years of college scholarships for children of<br />
Soldiers on active duty or retired. Since 1997, <strong>AER</strong> has helped children of Soldiers attend college by<br />
awarding 35,434 scholarships worth $62.9 million.<br />
Scholarships are normally awarded based on three criteria; financial need, grade point average and<br />
leadership. In <strong>2011</strong>, the average Ursano Scholarship award was $1,880. The children of Soldiers who die<br />
while on active duty are automatically granted the maximum award which was $3,000 in <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
<strong>AER</strong> also awarded scholarships totaling $79,833 under the Pentagon Victims’ Scholarship Fund which was<br />
established to provide undergraduate education assistance for children of Soldiers killed or severely<br />
wounded in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.<br />
