TheseOxbridge offers add tothe many <strong>Greenhead</strong>students have achievedover the last 15 yearswith <strong>13</strong>1 offers beingmade in the last fiveyears. At a timewhen the number ofapplicants is increasingto these Universities our‘hit-rate’ during recentyears is better than thenational average. Theoffers achieved by ourThis year’s successful Oxbridge applicantsstudents reflect achievement by all departments at the <strong>College</strong>, and their former High Schools.On the afternoon of Wednesday 31st March some of our former students who are already at Oxbridge, andfour admission tutors, came in to <strong>College</strong> to talk to our students and have some of the many myths dispelled.Further open meetings will be held in <strong>College</strong>, at lunchtimes, with the last being held on 30th April, for thosewho missed this meeting and would like to find out more.This success confirms the excellence and high standards of <strong>Greenhead</strong> <strong>College</strong> and you would have to go along way to find its equal. Congratulations to all the students as they embark upon their futures. TF+and came an impressive 8th outof 23 teams from the North ofEngland.Maths Report2009-10:Students in the MathsDepartment have been busythis year complementing theirA-level study with a range ofmathematical activities.In October 2009, DanielEdmondson, Sam Porritt, IsaacRose and Matthew Wedge-Roberts represented <strong>Greenhead</strong>at the Senior Team MathsChallenge at Leeds UniversityIn November 2009, 80 A1’sand A2’s entered the UK MathsChallenge competition andwere rewarded with 5 Gold, 15Silver and 23 Bronze awards.Sam Porritt’s exceptional scoreentitled him to take part inRounds 1 and 2 of the BritishMaths Olympiad and he cameup with a very creditableperformance in each.March <strong>2010</strong> proved a busytime with trips out to Leeds andManchester Universities for30 students to attend popularlectures on “Wii Technology”,“User-Centred Design” and “HowRound is a Circle?”The Maths Department alsohosted a Pop Maths Quiz for 70youngsters from partner schools.The team from All Saints wentaway with the winners’ trophy,with King James in second place.% -


<strong>Greenhead</strong>newsA CHANGE IN VENUENEWSLETTER ISSUE <strong>13</strong> SPRING <strong>2010</strong>The AS Geology fieldwork changed venue to Pembroke Coast, South Wales this year. Although cold,we were lucky to have five days of sun which made the coastal locations all the more enjoyable. Aslast year, we were accompanied by Vice Principal, Anton McGrath, and field assistants Vince Williamsand Charlotte Miller (ex <strong>Greenhead</strong> geology student). <strong>Greenhead</strong> geologists were again the recipientsof a new equipment grant of compass clinometers, courtesy of Vince Williams. <strong>Greenhead</strong>newsNEWSLETTER ISSUE <strong>13</strong> SPRING <strong>2010</strong>SPORT NEWS SPORT NEWS SPORT NEWSSporting Qualification CreditsGalore:Loughborough:Over 50 students from<strong>Greenhead</strong> have qualifiedto go to Loughborough thisyear for the National Finalsof the British <strong>College</strong>s Sport.Students will compete on the17th and 18th April, <strong>2010</strong>. Qualification is inboth male and female Hockey, Swimming,female Rugby Union, Tennis, Badminton,Golf and Trampolining. Students will berepresenting the North East region andcompete against students from othernational regions.Top Tennis:The girls’ and mixed Tennisteams both qualified toreach the National Finals ofthe Senior Schools TennisFinals on 20th and 21st March, after havingbeaten many schools and colleges in thenorthern region. This resulted in themplaying the other qualifying teams from allover the country at the Bolton Arena. Allplayers put 100% into the event and sometop class tennis was displayed. The girlsmade it through to the final by beatingBoston Grammar, George Watson Schooland Leweston School and just missedout to Culford School in the final. The<strong>Greenhead</strong> mixed team beat both BostonGrammar and Coopers Company andCoborn School but just missed out ongetting to the final by losing to Ellesmere ina tight fought tie break. Congratulations toall concerned. KLUHockey:An excellent year sofar with both team andindividual honours.Both the girls’ andboys’ squads havequalified to representthe NE regions at the BCS finals weekendto be held at Loughborough University inApril. The girls’ team has also reached thesemi-finals of the BCS girls’ hockey cup.The fixture against Moulton <strong>College</strong> will beplayed on Weds 28th April.Congratulations to Rosie Tootell and GregMoorhouse who have been selected for theBCS representative squads for women’sand men’s hockey respectively. Both Gregand Rosie are attending training campsat the moment before the national andinternational fixtures being held. A tourabroad is planned for the summer.Rugby Union:Congratulations toRoss Thornton who hasgained a place on theBCS Rugby Union squad. He has startedweekend training camps and will tourabroad in the summer. This is the first time<strong>Greenhead</strong> has had a student achieve thislevel.Golf:Congratulations to JamieBower and Imogen Covellwho have been selected torepresent the NE colleges inboth the team and individualgolf tournaments at the BCS finals inLoughborough.6www.greenhead.ac.uk


<strong>Greenhead</strong>newsNEWSLETTER ISSUE <strong>13</strong> SPRING <strong>2010</strong>Driven By SuccessA recent enterprise set up by two <strong>Greenhead</strong> students proved to be a roaring success. Matthew Dawsonand Josh Rushton-Crawshaw tapped into a gap in the market by arranging an event where students couldspeak to and sign up for lessons with local driving firms. Many students also took the opportunity to havetheir first taste of driving in the <strong>College</strong> overflow car park. Overall, a super experience for all involved andwatch out Jenson Button! PDCharitable Success:Students were united in wearing red. This was a visualexpression of support to accompany active fundraising onbehalf of the citizens of Haiti affected by the Earthquake.8www.greenhead.ac.ukFundraising pursuits have been a trademark of this year’sSenior Student committee. In addition to the £3500 raisedfor Charity Day other events have also featured. SianGreen, Senior Student, comments that the team “wantedthe students and teachers to know that their efforts arebeing recognised.” These efforts included a “Wear Red forHaiti” event which raised £2239. Sian notes that “when Iwalked into college on the day of the event, there was asea of red in the main hall. Fantastic!”Recently a “Bring a Bra” day was organised for the womenof Senegal. Sian notes that “we wanted to do more forcharity. The aim was to search at home for any old brasand bring them in. We have 320 bras as a result.” Oxfamrepresentatives are due to come into college and pickthe bras up as this edition goes to press. Oxfam has alsoconfirmed “that the bras will get to Senegal.”Thank you to all of the college community who have given money, time and resources so generously.Sian remarks that “every little thing done makes a difference in the long run.” Well done also to Sian, theSenior Student team and all colleagues who have continued to coordinate such worthwhile and importantendeavours.Thank you to Fred Lodge for his excellent range of photographs which have featuredin this edition of <strong>Greenhead</strong> News.Design & Production by Marketing for Education 01282 612222 (ref 1530 - 03/10).
