Kronprinsensgade.
The busy pedestrianised high street, Købmagergade.
Mile-long Strøget is the undisputed shop -
ping mecca of Copenhagen, but the narrow
streets leading off the high street beckon
you away from the bustle to revel in their
unique, inviting atmosphere. Take Pistolstræde,
a quaint pistol-shaped street and
courtyard just off ny Østergade, where you
can savour the cuisine and the old world
charm of Restaurant l’Alsace. Mere steps
from the Kongens nytorv metro station,
pistol stræde is a hidden gem with an
entrancing mix of restaurants, chocolatiers,
exclusive Danish woollens, and a sprinkling
of designer hives. Move on to historic
grønnegade, once a long-ago garden edging
the old city ramparts. There, chic shoe shops
and other speciality boutiques vie for
shoppers’ attention. Then there’s the universe
of Contrast on Hovedvagtsgade, where
you will find the best of kitchenware and
design. and on nearby Ny Østergade, don’t
miss the magnificent ole Lynggaard flagship
store for luxury jewellery.
hip urban village
nearby, the Pilestræde/Kronprinsensgade
area lures shoppers to its buzzy blend of
flagship stores, design showcases and
hipster hangouts. home to one of Denmark’s
best-known dailies, Berlingske, this part of
town caters to young professionals and
creative urbanites alike. one-time journalist
dive bars are now hives of design and the
urban village of Kronprinsensgade is a
treasure trove of classic cafés and youthful
Danish design.
Don’t miss the historic Skt. Petri Church
in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Much of
the original design dates back to the
fifteenth and sixteenth century, although
the Rococo spire from 1757 only miraculously
survived the bombardment of the
city in 1807 by the British navy. Indeed,
several of the cannonballs that struck the
church hang today in chains from its
vaulted ceilings. The church has served the
german Lutheran community in Copenhagen
since 1585 and its tranquil churchyard
gardens are today used as a playground
for the next-door kindergarten.
Visitors are welcome to the church and a
tour of the galleries with their tombs and
epitaphs to many local german dignitaries
is recommended.
