originally the location of the medieval
Copenhagen Castle, demolished in 1731, the
island of Slotsholmen, which means “The
Castle Isle”, has over the last 800 years been
the site of five different castles and palaces,
each reflecting different styles and epochs.
and even today you can see the vestiges of
all these palaces, from Rococo to neo classical,
and indeed the ruins of the two castles that
preceded them, including absalon’s Castle,
in the underground museum. Slotsholmen is

home to a wealth of museums and attractions,
small and great, making it a veritable museum

Towering above Slotsholmen is Christians -
borg, home to the Danish parliament
(Folketinget), the Royal Reception Rooms,
the Danish Supreme Court, and the prime
Minister’s office. Constructed in 1907-28 to
reflect a neo-Baroque style, today’s Christiansborg
palace was designed by architect
Thorvald Jørgensen. The newly renovated
castle tower reaches a height of 106 meters
and is the tallest spire in Copen hagen.

The Royal Reception Rooms are situated
in the northern wing of the palace. The
majestic halls are used by the Queen for
official functions such as state dinners,
royal banquets and public audiences. The
